This study examined whether objective physiological arousal predicts patient-triggered recordings (PTRs) in patients with an implantable loop recorder (ILR), to clarify how normative autonomic activation and clinically meaningful rhythm disturbances relate to symptom-triggered monitoring behavior during long-term surveillance. Data were drawn from 2,266 ILR patients enrolled in the CERTITUDE registry between 2019 and 2025; analyses were restricted to the 878 individuals who used the PTR function at least once. Day-level ILR data from the first 12 months following implantation were analyzed. Da

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that may influence health-seeking behaviors and health system interactions from the perspective of Black patients with lung cancer (LC) or peripheral artery disease (PAD).
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually with Black patients in the United States. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts was performed. The Sense-Think-ACT-Relate (STAR) behavioral framework was used to map emerging themes of drivers and barriers to health-seeking behaviors and health system interactions.
RESULTS: Thirty Black patients with LC (n = 15) and PAD (n = 15

Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) exhibit impaired inhibitory control and heightened affective sensitivity. This study aimed to investigate how negative emotions influence error monitoring in BPD. Twenty-six BPD patients and twenty-eight health controls completed psychological scales assessing borderline symptoms, impulsivity, depression and anxiety. Subsequently, participants performed an emotional stop signal task while electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected. Error-related neural activity was analyzed, focusing on the amplitude of error-related negativity (ERN), err

BACKGROUND: Social disadvantage has been associated with early socioemotional difficulties. In this study, we examined mechanisms that relate prenatal social disadvantage (PSD) to the development of early socioemotional problems by testing whether these associations were mediated by 1) neonatal brain volumes (BVs) and/or 2) early parenting behaviors.
METHODS: Women were recruited early in their pregnancies and followed prospectively. PSD encompassed access to material (e.g., income-to-needs, health insurance, area deprivation, nutrition, education) resources during pregnancy. Shortly after bi

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and alcohol use disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Among university students, alcohol use and poor mental health are associated with risky sexual behavior. Given the syndemic occurrence of these disorders most especially in young adults, we describe the relationship between them so as to guide and intensify current interventions on reducing their burden in this population.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on an online survey among healthcare professional university students that captured

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is not exclusively a motor disorder. Among non-motor features, patients with PD possess sensory visual dysfunctions. Depth perception and oculomotor deficits can significantly impact patients' motor performance. Stereopsis and eye behavioral study using 3D stimuli may help determine their implications in disease status.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate stereopsis and eye movement abnormalities in PD with reliable tools and their correlation with indicators of PD severity. We hypothesize that patients with PD exhibit different eye be

Schizophrenia is a debilitating disorder affecting young adults displaying symptoms of cognitive impairment, anxiety, and early social isolation prior to episodes of auditory hallucinations. Cannabis use has been tied to schizophrenia-like symptoms, indicating that dysregulated endogenous cannabinoid signaling may be causally linked to schizophrenia. Previously, we reported that glutamatergic neuron-selective ablation of Lmo4, an endogenous inhibitor of the tyrosine phosphatase PTP1B, impairs endocannabinoid (eCB) production from the metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR5. These Lmo4-deficient

Hydrogen therapy is a new medical approach for a wide range of diseases. The effects of hydrogen on central nervous system-related diseases have recently become increasingly appreciated, but little is known about whether hydrogen affects the morphine withdrawal process. This study aims to investigate the potential effects of hydrogen-rich saline (HRS) administration on naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms and morphine withdrawal-induced anxiety-like behaviors. Mice received gradually increasing doses (25-100 mg/kg, i.p.) of morphine over 3 days. In the naloxone-precipitated withdrawal pro

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of increasing levels of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional/defiant behaviors at age 7 years on academic achievement at age 16 years.
METHOD: In a population-based sample of 7-year-old children in England, information was obtained about inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional/defiant behaviors (using parent and teacher ratings) and the presence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs). After adjusting for confounder variables, their associations with academic achieveme

Headache is generally perceived as a negative symptom focused on oneself. However, there are reports suggesting that patients suffering from pain, especially headache, can be aggressive. The precise nature of the link between headache and aggression is not known. Here, we describe a homicidal attack, triggered by headache, in a middle-aged man. The patient's background and the characteristics of the attack suggested a dissociative behavior. The case shows that headache may be a trigger for homicidal behavior. Case-control studies are needed to determine the prevalence of aggressive tendencies

Movement and behavior disorders developing during sleep or in the transitional state from sleep to wakefulness are mostly unfamiliar to Japanese neurologists, primarily because these disorders are objects of basic research. In addition, the patients with sleep related movement and behavior disorders (SRMBD) show no signs and symptoms in our consulting rooms, and cannot be identified without polysomnography (PSG) attended by trained sleep technologists. Although attended PSG is not widely available in Japan, some kinds of SRMBD ought to be clinical targets for neurologists, and they are the sco

Gastrodin is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat Tourette's syndrome (TS). This study evaluated the effects of gastrodin on the dopamine system. TS rat models were established by intraperitoneal injection of apomorphine. After intervention by gastrodin, stereotyped behaviors of TS rats were significantly inhibited and levels of homovanillic acid (HVA) were significantly increased. We conclude that gastrodin effectively inhibited stereotyped behaviors and controlled TS symptoms by promoting dopamine metabolism, thereby increasing levels of HVA in sera.

For many individuals, the days leading up to menstruation are associated with aversive mood, behavioral, and physical symptoms, a condition known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Severe levels of these symptoms can lead to clinical diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoria (PMDD). Although prior research has uncovered important psychological and hormonal predictors of PMS/PMDD symptoms in clinical populations, more research is needed to understand how these factors relate in a subclinical population. A test of the menstrual timing and hormonal links to symptom experience alongside factors related to

Most adult mental health conditions begin in early childhood and adolescence, the most common being anxiety and behavioral disorders. Early intervention can improve outcomes and may reduce the risk of developing a clinical disorder in the future. However, children may not have the communication or understanding to share their symptoms with those around them, leaving pediatric primary care providers responsible for identifying concerning signs. This paper reviews both general symptoms that suggest possible mental health conditions as well as specific correlations between symptoms and psychiatri

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is an individual difference dimension reflecting negative cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to uncertainty. IU is an important etiological and maintaining mechanism of internalizing psychopathology, including social anxiety disorder (SAD). The current study aimed to further understand the relationship between IU and SAD symptom severity, distress, and functioning as well as the predictive power of IU for SAD symptoms and functioning over time. Consistent with our hypotheses, we found that IU was greater in individuals with a lifetime diagnosis of SA

BACKGROUND: Canadian public safety personnel (PSP) experience high rates of mental health disorders and face many barriers to treatment. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) overcomes many such barriers, and is effective for treating depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to fill a gap in the literature regarding the use of ICBT tailored specifically for PSP. We examined the effectiveness of a tailored ICBT program for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms among PSP in the province of Saskatchewan.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety control beliefs have emerged as a trans-diagnostic risk factor for anxiety disorders and a potential mechanism of change in cognitive and behavioral therapies. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between anxiety control beliefs and anxiety disorder symptoms following exposure to hurricanes in youth and test a developmental hypothesis about those associations.
METHODS: A large school-based sample of (N = 1048) children and adolescents with a history of exposure to natural disaster were assessed with the short form of the Anxiety Control Questionnaire fo

BACKGROUND: Psychotropic medication is widely prescribed in clinical practice for the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there have been few pharmaco-epidemiological studies or studies conducted in a natural setting on the real use of antidepressants in AD. The aim of this survey was to assess the prevalence of antidepressant use in AD and to identify the clinical factors associated with antidepressant prescription.

BACKGROUND: Most studies have relied on a cumulative risk approach when examining adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This approach assumes equal weighting of adversities and fails to consider how the nature, severity, and combination of ACEs may differentially impact outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: Employing a person-centered approach, we identified distinct patterns of ACEs in a sample of Army National Guard recruits and investigated how these patterns relate to internalizing symptoms (i.e., self-reported mental health) and externalizing problems (i.e., substance use and rule-breaking behaviors).

Emerging research emphasizes early-life war exposure as a key determinant of later-life health in older adults from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, the linkages between war exposure, social networks, and later-life health behaviors have received little attention. Using data from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study, we investigate how early-life war experiences relate to the social networks and health behaviors of 1195 Vietnamese men aged 60+ who survived the Vietnam War (1965-1975). We utilize latent class analysis to identify men's network types and examine the associations
