Successful Outcome of VASER Liposuction Followed by Keto Diet in a 35-year-old Man with Class III Obesity.

Obesity is a widespread health concern worldwide, necessitating diverse interventions for effective weight management. Despite prior unsuccessful attempts at weight loss through conventional methods, including dietary restrictions and physical exercises, this case underscores the challenges faced by individuals with morbid obesity. This case report presents the successful outcome of VASER liposuction followed by a 6-month postoperative ketogenic diet regimen in a 35-year-old man with a body mass index (BMI) of 40. The patient, initially weighing 127 kg with a BMI of 40.9 kg/m² and significant

Association between exposure to interpersonal violence and social isolation, and the adoption of unhealthy weight control practices.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between interpersonal violence, social isolation and unhealthy weight control practices. METHODS: Data on a representative sample of 9th grade Brazilian adolescents from public and private schools (n = 102,072), taken from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE, 2015) were used. The exposures were interpersonal violence (family physical violence, body appearance-related bullying and bullying for the other reasons) and social isolation. The outcomes were unhealthy weight control practices: self-induced vomiting/take laxatives and take any diet pills, pow

Differential energy metabolism in conjoined twins.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Conjoined twins often have different body composition and growth rate before separation. This may be because of differen … ickness and anthropometric measurements. RESULTS: The body composition of the twins was different: body weight and total body fat were higher in twin B. Resting energy expenditure and calorie intake were markedly different between the conjoined twins before separation. In both twins, the energy expenditure increased after separation. After separation, the re …

Gestational retinoic acid exposure: a sensitive period for effects on neonatal mortality and cerebellar development.

This is the first in a series of studies investigating the developmental stage-specific neurobehavioral effects of all-trans retinoic acid (RA) exposure. Because high doses of this compound are known to be lethal to the developing organism, we first conducted a dose-response study to identify RA doses that produce low enough levels of gestational/postnatal mortality to make a behavioral analysis possible in survivors. Secondarily, at doses found to produce sufficient survivors on PND 28, effects on body and regional brain weights were examined. Finally, at these doses, effects on somatic malfo

Studies and reevaluations of some aspects on thyroid function after superior cervical sympathetic gangliectomy in rats.

The results of 11 experiments in a total of 571 rats (initial body weight of 150-250 g) are reported and some findings differing from those by others are discussed. It was repeatedly found that the animals after bilateral or even unilateral superior cervical sympathetic gangliectomy (GX) did not gain body weight during the first week after surgery. Though they started to grow later, for several weeks their body weight remained significantly less than that of sham operated controls (SH). Though such phenomenon has not yet been described, it may well explain the increase of thyroid weight (as ex…

Efficacy and Safety of Mazdutide in Managing Overweight and Obesity Among Non-Diabetic Adults: A Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Mazdutide, a dual GLP-1 and glucagon receptor agonist, shows promise for weight loss and glycaemic control. This study evaluates its efficacy in non-diabetic patients with obesity. METHODOLOGY: A search of Cochrane Library, PubMed, Google Scholar and clinicaltrials.gov identified randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of mazdutide in adults (≥ 18 years) with obesity. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 with random-effect models. RESULTS: Five RCTs were included. Mazdutide significantly reduced percentage body weight (MD = -12.42%, 95% CI: -16.15% to -8.68%), absolute body w…

Unscheduled changes in pre-clinical stroke model housing contributes to variance in physiological and behavioural data outcomes: A post hoc analysis.

Ischaemic stroke presents a significant problem worldwide with no neuroprotective drugs available. Many of the failures in the search for ne … nscheduled changes were implemented in the animal housing facility. These changes severely impacted body weight post-stroke resulting in a change from the typical body weight of 90.6% of pre-surgery weight post-stroke, to on average 80.5% of pre-surgery weight post-stroke. The changes also appeared to impact post-stroke blood pressure, with an increase from 2 …

Oleuropein mitigates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and modulates liver metabolites in high-fat diet-induced obese mice via activating PPARα.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of oleuropein (OLE) ameliorates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a low-fat diet (LFD), a high-fat diet (HFD), or a HFD supplemented with 0.03% (w/w) OLE for 16 weeks. OLE supplementation decreased body weight and liver weight, improved serum lipid profiles, and ameliorated HFD-induced hepatic dysfunction. Liver metabolomics analysis revealed that OLE increased the levels of nicotinamide, tauroursodeoxycholic acid, taurine, and docosahexaenoic acid, which …

Development of laboratory rats receiving silver-enriched ration for a long time.

We studied the effect of silver ions on the status and metabolism of copper in rats receiving Ag-diet from the first day of life and for 6 months. The effect of silver ions on copper metabolism was assessed by body weight, relative weight of organs (body weight/organ weight), oxidase activity, content of immunoreactive ceruloplasmin and copper concentration in blood serum, by the expression of copper-transporting protein genes in the liver, and copper and silver distribution in liver and brain cells. Brain functions were evaluated by open-field behavior and passive avoidance conditioning. No a…

[Role of the amniotic fluid in gastroschisis. An experimental study].

The short and thick bowel found in gastroschisis has been attributed to contact with amniotic fluid, among other factors. We designed an original animal model in order to isolate the effect of amniotic fluid on the fetal bowel. We created experimental gastroschisis in fetal rabbits. Extruded bowel was kept out of the amniotic sac in half of the operated fetuses. At term, seven days after surgery, 21 surviving fetuses--12 intra-amniotic (GIA) and nine extra-amniotic (GEA)--and 16 control littermates were harvested for study. Five parameters were measured in each animal: body weight, intestinal …

[Several indicators of protein and nucleic acid metabolism in lymphoid organs of rats exposed to hypokinesia and vitamin B1 deficiency].

RNA, DNA, total protein, transketolase (TK), alanine aminotransferase (AlAT), aspartate aminotransferase (AsAT), methionyl-tRNA (met-tRNA)- and cysteinyl-tRNA (cys-tRNA)-synthetases in the thymus and spleen of 46 intact rats exposed to hypokinesia and vitamin B1 deficiency were measured. It was found that 15-day hypokinesia induced a significant decrease of the thymus and spleen weight and an increase of AlAT in the thymus. Vitamin B1 deficiency (hydroxy thiamine in drinking water at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight for 15 days) led to a substantial decrease of TK in blood, AlAT and AsAT in the s…

Energy expenditure economy induced by decrease in lean body mass in anorexia nervosa.

In anorexia nervosa, the low energy input associated with the classic overactivity during the malnourished state needs a sparing of energy expended at rest and also during physical activity. Therefore, we measured energy expenditure, both at rest and during moderate bicycling exercise (30W, 6 min), in 11 adult anorectic patients (weight 35.15 +/- 4.30 kg, mean +/- s.d.) at the beginning of their treatment and again after a mean weight gain of about 8.4 kg. During the malnourished state, the resting energy expenditure (REE) was lower than that predicted according to Harris and Benedict (P less

Serial pulmonary angiography in rats with pulmonary damage due to intravascular coagulation.

Serial pulmonary angiography was performed in 30 rats with pulmonary damage caused by injection of a fibrinolysis inhibitor, tranexamic acid (200 mg/kg body weight injected intraperitoneally) and bovine thrombin (500 NIH/kg body weight injected into the right atrium or ventricle). The degree of inhomogeneity of the capillary phase was graded and compared with that in a group of normal rats. Changes in the capillary phase were well correlated to other signs of lung trauma, namely increase in lung weight and microscopic occurrence of interstitial and alveolar oedema and of intravascular fibrin d…

Experimental studies on the influence of male alcoholism on fetal development.

To study the effect of paternal chronic ethanol consumption on fetal development, an experimental rat model was established and compared to the fetal alcohol syndrome. Male and female Wistar rats were divided into 30% ethanol (E) and control groups. Before mating and during pregnancy the ethanol group and control group received E and water, respectively. Pregnancies were terminated on gestational day 21. The body weight, liver weight, blood glucose, serum insulin and cerebral CNPase activity were decreased in alcoholic males. The adverse effect of maternal chronic ethanol on fetal development …

Pre- to post-diagnosis weight change and associations with physical functional limitations in breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: We investigated pre- to post-diagnosis weight change and functional limitations in a cohort of breast cancer survivors. METHODS: A cohort of 1,841 early-stage breast cancer survivors provided information on pre- and post-diagnosis weight and physical function on average 2 years post-diagnosis. The mean number of limitations for each BMI category and each weight change category were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Cross-sectional associations between weight change, from 1 year prior to diagnosis to 2 years post-diagnosis, and functional limitations were determined using logistic reg

Higher-Protein Nutrition and Concurrent Exercise in Obesity: A Narrative Review of Body Composition, Metabolic Health, and Physical Function.

Obesity care increasingly requires outcomes that extend beyond total body weight. Although weight reduction remains clinically meaningful, the scale alone does not indicate whether fat mass, lean tissue, muscle quality, strength, mobility, or physiological reserve have changed in a favorable direction. This narrative review examines the combined role of higher-protein dietary strategies and concurrent exercise in adults with obesity, with emphasis on body composition, metabolic health, and physical function. Higher-protein dietary strategies may support satiety, improve the tolerability of ene…

Predictors of treatment response to semaglutide for weight management.

The emergence of weekly, injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists has revolutionized the obesity management landscape. Numerous studies have shown high efficacy as well as great variability in weight loss, highlighting the need for this mini review, summarizing current evidence about predictors of semaglutide-related weight loss. The first well-known determinant of semaglutide-induced weight loss is the presence of type 2 DM which is associated with significantly lower body weight reduction. The second predictor is sex, with females exhibiting a greater weight loss than mal…
