Congenital Hypothyroidism.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a disorder of thyroid hormone deficiency which develops secondary to incomplete thyroid development or inadequate thyroid hormone production. State-mandated newborn screening throughout the United States has increased the detection rate of CH, allowing for early intervention. Although the overall mortality rate of CH is low, delayed or omitted treatment can lead to devastating neurocognitive outcomes. As such, CH is regarded as the leading cause of preventable intellectual disability in children. Early identification, facilitated by astute neonatal nursing and

Multi-Stroke handwriting character recognition based on sEMG using convolutional-recurrent neural networks.

Despite the increasing use of technology, handwriting has remained to date as an efficient means of communication. Certainly, handwriting is a critical motor skill for childrens cognitive development and academic success. This article presents a new methodology based on electromyographic signals to recognize multi-user free-style multi-stroke handwriting characters. The approach proposes using powerful Deep Learning (DL) architectures for feature extraction and sequence recognition, such as convolutional and recurrent neural networks. This framework was thoroughly evaluated, obtaining an accur

Hair-pulling disorder (Trichotillomania): Etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment in a nutshell.

Hair-pulling disorder (Trichotillomania) is a disabling mental disorder. Patient's behavior is characterized by the recurrent pulling of own hair with hair loss and a marked dysfunction in various areas of daily life. Trichotillomania is a relatively common disorder with pediatric onset, often associated with significant morbidity, comorbidity, and functional decline. Surprisingly, children or adolescents have been little studied in the research studies on the pathophysiology and psychopathology of trichotillomania. Furthermore, more evidences regarding the effective and evidence-based pharmac

Désiré-Magloire Bourneville and his contributions to pediatric neurology.

Désiré-Magloire Bourneville ought to be thought of as the father of Pediatric Neurology for his significant contributions to the field. He worked as a physician, politician, writer, and editor. He was the first to describe the autosomal dominant genetic condition known as "tuberous sclerosis complex", after conducting an autopsy on a young female patient, where the main finding in the central nervous system was multiple dense tubers. The patient had refractory epilepsy and intellectual disability. His work was based on the study of epilepsy and idiocy, and he was also an advocate of public hea

Autoantibodies in Myositis. How to Achieve a Comprehensive Strategy for Serological Testing.

Myopathies are a rare type of acquired, chronic autoimmune diseases of the skeletal muscles and affect both children and adults. The hallmark symptoms of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are muscle inflammation, proximal muscle weakness and disability, arthritis, cutaneous rashes, calcinosis, ulceration, malignancy and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Subforms of IIM include polymyositis, dermatomyositis, cancer-related myositis and sporadic inclusion body myositis. Autoantibodies function as biomarkers for diagnosis of IIM and can be used to delimit clinically distinguishable IIM subf

McCay ("Mac") Vernon (1928-2013).

McCay ("Mac") Vernon, the founding and preeminent psychologist in the field of deafness. Mac was born at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC, into a military family on October 14, 1928 and died on August 28, 2013, at the age of 84. Prior to Mac, research and clinical direction in the field were sparse. Mac became the icon for psychological services for deaf people, and his work extended into the education of deaf children, forensic and ethical practices with the deaf, and public understanding of deafness as a disability and of deaf persons as a psychosocial minority group. Mac will also be

Neurological manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of celiac disease: A comprehensive review.

Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity may initially present as one or more neurological signs and/or symptoms. On the other hand, it may be associated with or complicated by neurological manifestations. Neurological presentations are rare in children but as many as 36% of adult patients present with neurological changes. With severe malnutrition after progression of celiac disease, different vitamin deficiencies may develop. Such problems can in turn overlap with previous neurological abnormalities including ataxia, epilepsy, neuropathy, dementia, and cognitive disorders. In this study, we aime

SNP variations in the 7q33 region containing DGKI are associated with dyslexia in the Finnish and German populations.

Four genes, DYX1C1, ROBO1, DCDC2 and KIAA0319 have been studied both genetically and functionally as candidate genes for developmental dyslexia, a common learning disability in children. The identification of novel genes is crucial to better understand the molecular pathways affected in dyslectic individuals. Here, we report results from a fine-mapping approach involving linkage and association analysis in Finnish and German dyslexic cohorts. We restrict a candidate region to 0.3 Mb on chromosome 7q33. This region harbours the gene diacylglycerol kinase, iota (DGKI) which contains overlapping

Neural correlates of sentence reading in children with reading difficulties.

In contrast to word-level skills, the neural basis of sentence comprehension in children with reading difficulties is not well understood. Using magnetic source imaging, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of regional activity associated with silent passage reading in nonimpaired and students with reading difficulties. The latter exhibited underactivation of the temporoparietal and visual cortices, bilaterally, and of the left posterior cingulate region. Late activity in left temporoparietal and ventral occipitotemporal regions was found to be a significant predictor of individual read

Overt and incomplete (silent) cerebral infarction in sickle cell anemia: diagnosis and management.

Regional complete infarctions in children with sickle cell anemia (HbSS) are often associated with stenosis of the large intracranial arteries and result in lifetime disability. Incomplete infarction occurs more frequently than previously recognized and has far-reaching effects on neurocognitive development and the risk for overt secondary strokes into adulthood. Clinical and neuroimaging modalities have been highlighted in an algorithmic approach, with the studies giving the highest yield in results and most likely to be available listed in sequential order. The recognition of an emerging "se

Atypical trajectories of number development: a neuroconstructivist perspective.

Despite the fact that number deficits are as prevalent as literacy deficits, research on basic numerical skills lags seriously behind the successful studies identifying low-level deficits in dyslexia. We review current debates on number, discussing how the competing theories pertain to mathematical disabilities in normal children and numeracy deficits in genetic disorders. We stress the need to consider these issues within the framework of a developing system rather than from the neuropsychological perspective of focal damage. The earlier the exploration of atypical trajectories in very basic

[A case of learning-disabled child with a white matter lesion in the left parietal lobe].

We reported a learning-disabled boy, 7-year-old and right handedness, who was similar to developmental Gerstmann syndrome. Dyscalcuria, right-left disorientation, dysgraphia and finger agnosia were correlated with his sequential disorder which was clearly presented by Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. In this case, a small infarcted lesion was found in the white matter near the left semioval center on MRI. Hypoperfusion of left parietal lobe was also detected by SPECT. The hemisphere dominant in language was assumed to be on the left side by dichotic listening test. We suggested that le

Dynamic varus heel cup: a new orthosis for treating pes planovalgus.

Pes planovalgus is an extremely common deformity and still not completely understood. Its pathogenesis and the possibilities for treating it with shoe inserts are still under debate. While the controversy between abstentionists and interventionists remains a fact, since a certain number of flat feet persist into adult age and cause disability, a new type of orthosis is proposed. This has been tested on children affected with grade III pes planovalgus and with all the worst clinical, objective and prognostic parameters. The study was carried out with a control group using traditional Lelièvre i

Hospitalization of children with status asthmaticus: a review.

A review of hospital admissions of patients with status asthmaticus at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles showed a marked increase in admissions in recent years. Asthma mortality did not increase. Patients tended to be young, boys, and black as compared with patients admitted to a general hospital. Interviews with 100 patients and/or their parents admitted between February and June 1988 indicated that the majority of patients had frequent, severe, and/or disabling symptoms and a significant number were undertreated. Forty-five percent of these patients and 46% of all patients admitted betwe

Volkmann's ischaemic contracture of the forearm.

Twenty-three patients with established contractures of the forearm, which were treated by excision of all irreparably damaged muscles, lengthening of the tendons and neurolysis of the median and ulnar nerves, are reported. Fourteen patients were children. Supracondylar fractures of the humerus, all treated by plaster-of-Paris, were associated with 10 contractures. Twelve patients achieved good or normal function of the hand after treatment; 5 had obvious functional disability, 4 achieved only a support function and 2 required forearm amputations. Early treatment improved the functional result.

Cost-effectiveness evaluation of a radio campaign to improve full vaccination coverage among children under-five in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Achieving timely childhood vaccination is a challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A three-month intervention called 10 + 10 + 30 involved 10-minute serial radio drama on vaccination, 10-minute community health worker discussion, and a 30-minute phone-in by listeners was implemented in Jimma Zone, Ethiopia. The goal was to increase childhood vaccination and improve child health outcomes. There is limited evidence of the cost-effectiveness of a radio-only intervention on childhood vaccination in LMICs. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the cost-effectiveness

Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody-Associated Disease: Current Insights into the Disease Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Management.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-associated disease (MOGAD) is a rare, antibody-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) with various phenotypes starting from optic neuritis, via transverse myelitis to acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and cortical encephalitis. Even though sometimes the clinical picture of this condition is similar to the presentation of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), most experts consider MOGAD as a distinct entity with different immune system pathology. MOG is a molecule detected on the outer membr

Deep Brain Stimulation during Pregnancy and Delivery: Experience from a Series of "DBS Babies".

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is widely used to improve quality of life in movement disorders (MD) and psychiatric diseases. Even though the ability to have children has a big impact on patients' life, only a few studies describe the role of DBS in pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To describe risks and management of women treated by DBS for disabling MD or psychiatric diseases during pregnancy and delivery. METHODS: We report a retrospective case series of women, followed in two DBS centers, who became pregnant and went on to give birth to a child while suffering from disabling MD or psych
