Platelet survival has been measured in 16 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Of this group, three patients had a normal result and surface counting did not show high splenic uptake. The clinical features of these patients are described. These patients have remained well for several years without treatment.

The present study defines the early response of normal rabbits to the intravenous injection of a single, sublethal dose of endotoxin. Within the first few hours following endotoxin there occurs in the circulating plasma of recipients a decrease in ionized calcium, a threefold increase in the heat-stable, organo-phosphate-resistant esterase level, and a striking increase in the endotoxin-detoxifying capacity. Twenty-nine patients were given an intraperitoneal transfusion of blood. The procedure was found to be free of serious complications. Study of the absorption of an (51)Cr-labelled cells from the peritoneum in 14 patients showed that between 35 and 100% of the blood was absorbed intact in 6 to 10 days. Intraperitoneal transfusion may be indicated as an alternative or as an addition to exchange transfusion in severe hookworm anaemia.

Serum haptoglobin has been estimated quantitatively in 25 patients with haemolytic disease, and its diagnostic value assessed by comparing the levels with those obtained in 110normal subjects, in 149 patients with other forms of anaemia, and in 37 patients with non-haematological disorders.
