AIM: To assess laparoscopic radical resection of lower rectal cancer with telescopic anastomosis through transanal resection without abdominal incisions.
METHODS: From March 2010 to June 2014, 30 patients (14 men and 16 women, aged 36-78 years, mean age 59.8 years) underwent laparoscopic radical resection of lower rectal cancer with telescopic anastomosis through anus-preserving transanal resection. Removal of rectosigmoid retained foreign bodies (RFB) may require laparoscopy and often laparotomy. Proctoscopic extraction from the distal sigmoid colon and proximal rectum can be technically difficult. Using a transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) approach, RFBs can be safely removed, avoiding an abdominal operation with associated morbidity. Hodgkin's lymphoma complicating chronic ulcerative colitis is extremely rare. We report a case of extranodal Hodgkin's lymphoma involving rectosigmoid in a patient of chronic ulcerative colitis on long-term azathioprine. A 67-year-old man presented with extensive ulcerative colitis, on follow-up since September 2005. He received long-term steroids, mesalamine and azathioprine. The authors report the case of a patient aged 60-year-old who survived ulcerative colitis complicated by toxic megacolon and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Sigmoid volvulus is a rare condition seen during pregnancy with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. We report a case of a young 26-year-old woman, primipara, in her third trimester who presented with recurrent sigmoid volvulus at both 30 and 32 weeks of gestation. She underwent successful repetitive endoscopic decompression on both admissions with uneventful recovery. Endoscopic evaluation is safe in pregnancy and uncomplicated volvulus.
