Impacts of soybean agriculture on the resistome of the Amazonian soil.

The soils of the Amazon are complex environments with different organisms cohabiting in continuous adaptation processes; this changes significantly when these environments are modified for the development of agricultural activities that alter the chemical, macro, and microbiological compositions. The metagenomic variations and the levels of the environmental impact of four different soil samples from the Amazon region were evaluated, emphasizing the resistome. Soil samples from the organic phase from the different forest, pasture, and transgenic soybean monocultures of 2-14 years old were coll

Plasma Lipids as Biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is caused by several risk factors leading to dementia. It's diagnosis usually depends on clinical presentation and certain biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The brain has a high content of cholesterol and the metabolism of cholesterol in the brain can be associated with beta-amyloid plaques formation, which is seen in Alzheimer's disease. Given these implications, we studied if plasma lipid levels can vary in Alzheimer's disease and if these can be used as biomarkers to diagnose and predict the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Certain mutations in the bra

Autism and Epilepsy in Patients With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Introduction: Individuals with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) are at increased risk of developing both epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the relationship between these conditions is little understood. We reviewed published reports to elucidate the relationship between ASD, epilepsy, and TSC, and to define the genetic and neurological risk factors. Methods: Articles (January 2004-May 2019) were identified via PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL databases. Article inclusion required report on individuals with TSC-associated ASD and epilepsy with prevalence, odds ratio, or rate report on

Multiscale analysis for patterns of Zika virus genotype emergence, spread, and consequence.

The question of how Zika virus (ZIKV) changed from a seemingly mild virus to a human pathogen capable of microcephaly and sexual transmission remains unanswered. The unexpected emergence of ZIKV's pathogenicity and capacity for sexual transmission may be due to genetic changes, and future changes in phenotype may continue to occur as the virus expands its geographic range. Alternatively, the sheer size of the 2015-16 epidemic may have brought attention to a pre-existing virulent ZIKV phenotype in a highly susceptible population. Thus, it is important to identify patterns of genetic change that

Identification of a missense variant in the WFS1 gene that causes a mild form of Wolfram syndrome and is associated with risk for type 2 diabetes in Ashkenazi Jewish individuals.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Wolfram syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive syndrome characterised by juvenile-onset diabetes and optic atrophy and is caused by bi-allelic mutations in the WFS1 gene. In a recent sequencing study, an individual with juvenile-onset diabetes was observed to be homozygous for a rare missense variant (c.1672C>T, p.R558C) in the WFS1 gene. The aim of this study was to perform the genetic characterisation of this variant and to determine whether it is causal for young-onset diabetes and Wolfram syndrome. METHODS: We analysed the allele frequency of the missense variant in mult

Maternal drug use and the risk of anorectal malformations: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Origin of anorectal malformations (ARM) are considered multifactorial. Several genetic and non-genetic risk factors are discussed in literature. Maternal periconceptional medical drug use as possible risk factor, however, has not been reviewed systematically. METHODS: Studies published between 1977 and April 2017 were reviewed through systematic search in PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus databases. Furthermore, related and cross-referencing publications were reviewed. Pooled odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were determined to quantify associations of maternal periconc

Smokescreen: a targeted genotyping array for addiction research.

BACKGROUND: Addictive disorders are a class of chronic, relapsing mental disorders that are responsible for increased risk of mental and medical disorders and represent the largest, potentially modifiable cause of death. Tobacco dependence is associated with increased risk of disease and premature death. While tobacco control efforts and therapeutic interventions have made good progress in reducing smoking prevalence, challenges remain in optimizing their effectiveness based on patient characteristics, including genetic variation. In order to maximize collaborative efforts to advance addiction

Nanostructured lipid carriers as co-delivery systems for cancer therapy: Prospects and challenges.

Cancer combination therapy is widely used to address tumor heterogeneity, multidrug resistance, and dose-limiting toxicities associated with conventional monotherapy. However, the clinical benefits of free-drug combinations are often compromised by mismatched pharmacokinetics, inconsistent intratumoral drug ratios, and poor solubility or stability of individual agents. Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), composed of a solid-liquid lipid matrix, have emerged as a biocompatible nanoplatform capable of overcoming these limitations through high drug-loading capacity, improved colloidal stability

Cystinuria: Diagnosis, Medical and Surgical Management, and Emerging Therapies. A Narrative Review.

Cystinuria is a hereditary aminoaciduria causing recurrent cystine nephrolithiasis, impaired quality of life and potential renal function decline. Despite established treatment guidelines, real-world data reveal a persistent gap between recommended targets and clinical outcomes. Preliminary data from the EUROCYS 2024 prospective European registry (269 patients, 29 centers, 8 countries) showed that only 16.3% of patients achieved the target urinary pH range, 55.2% remained above the conventional urinary cystine threshold of 250 mg/L, and approximately 39% experienced a new stone event within th
