Circulating filarial antigen (CFA) isolated from the plasma of microfilaraemic patients was fractionated on an Ultrogel ACA 34 column. Serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were estimated by ELISA in 50 children with chronic tonsillitis before and after tonsillectomy. When compared with the control group, mean serum IgE concentration was found to be significantly higher in children with chronic tonsillitis (P less than 0.001). Since 1986, all Massachusetts newborn filter paper blood specimens, and some from New Hampshire, have been screened for the presence of IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii using an enzyme-linked IgM capture assay. 294 serum samples from five Norwegian reindeer herds were examined for antibodies against Hypoderma tarandi L. We compared the performance of a newly developed Dot-ELISA with that of a previously described Sandwich-ELISA to detect parasite antigens in sera from patients with bancroftian filariasis. In the present study, blood from paid and unpaid donors was screened for the presence of HIV infection using a competitive ELISA test. None of the 8,000 unpaid donors but 4 (0.23%) of the 1,700 paid donors showed evidence of HIV infection. All of these four ELISA-positive samples were confirmed by the Western blot test.
