Nineteen mentally retarded inpatients with epilepsy and a history of current or recent aggressive behavior were treated with 20 mg of fluoxetine daily. All were concurrently taking other psychotropic medications, including carbamazepine and neuroleptics. A standardized rating scale (MOAS) was used to assess the effects of fluoxetine on aggressive behavior. There were wide individual differences in drug response. A long-term prospective study was carried out of 133 children diagnosed as having epilepsy in the first year of life, of whom two-thirds had West syndrome and one-third had other forms of epilepsy. They were followed for a minimum of three years (half for over seven years), during which time 15 children died. To test the feasibility of comparing epilepsy treatment policies and outcome, a secondary and a tertiary epilepsy care facility have been audited in a previous study (1). Sleep disorders were investigated in 40 children with tuberous sclerosis (TS) and compared with those found in non-disabled children and those reported in a mixed group with learning disabilities. Significantly higher levels of sleep disturbance were found in the TS group compared with both other groups. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of vigabatrin in children with epilepsy. Sixty-one children with various types of severe epilepsy were studied. In 12 children vigabatrin was introduced as monotherapy, while in 49 it was added to other antiepileptic drugs. A group of 51 patients with chronic cryptogenic or symptomatic localized epilepsy refractory to therapy with barbiturates underwent progressive substitution with phenytoin or carbamazepine, in standardized and randomized fashion. An unusually high number of patients with epilepsy was observed in Kyarusozi sub-county, where infection with Onchocerca volvulus is hyperendemic. Myoclonus epilepsy associated with ragged-red fibers (MERRF) is a degenerative disease involving dentate nuclei of the cerebellum, globus pallidus, the posterior columns and spinocerebellar tracts of the spinal cord, and skeletal muscles. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging enable the identification of neuronal migration disorders during life. Several specific syndromes have been identified and early diagnosis of previously unrecognized entities is now possible. We report 51 patients with imaging. Thirty-two had a single widespread cortical dysplastic lesion. Twenty-eight had focal corticectomies. Taltrimide was compared with valproate and placebo in 17 patients with intractable epilepsy being on carbamazepine monotherapy. Taltrimide (400 mg/day), valproate (1000 mg/day) or placebo were added to the treatment for periods of 3 months using a randomized cross-over design. Three-hundred and eighty-one children born with forceps delivery and 372 with normal delivery were followed up for 4-7 years. More children in the forceps group developed seizures than in normal group, i.e. 22:10. This was statistically significant (P less than 0.05). A prolonged follow-up is necessary for further observations.

After reviewing the data of the literature, the authors report their personal series composed of twelve cases. In evaluating the results of surgical treatment only the first ten patients are taken into account. As previously stressed in the literature, callosotomy (total in two cases and anterior in the remainder) has proved effective in abolishing or significantly reducing atonic seizures.
