The summating potential and Meniere's disease. I. Summating potential amplitude in Meniere and non-Meniere ears.

We investigated the relationship between Meniere's disease and the abnormally enlarged summating potential (SP) in a series of patients and normal subjects. Cochlear and auditory nerve responses to rectangular-pulse clicks, delivered at a rate of 8/s and an intensity of 115 dB peak-equivalent sound pressure level, were recorded from ear canal skin. We performed a parabolic regression for SP amplitudes as a function of auditory nerve action potential (AP) amplitudes in normal ears and obtained the 95% confidence interval (+/- 2 SD) for normal scatter around the fitted curve. Sixty-eight percent

Effect of round window removal on auditory thresholds in cats.

Round window fistula is a recognized and proven pathological entity that can cause sudden hearing loss. The study reported here, using cats, measured changes in the brainstem evoked response threshold to click stimuli after total removal of the round window membrane. The results showed an immediate 25 dB threshold decline followed by a further 35 dB decline over four hours. The response threshold then remained constant for 20 hours. In one animal there was no response to a stimulus of 110 dB SPL immediately post-op, and this animal, on re-examination, had a hole in the basilar membrane. In two

Electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked response (VER) studies in patients with optic disc drusen.

Non-corneal ERGs, recorded from infraorbital skin electrodes to flash stimulation and mid-occipital and parasagittal VERs to both flash stimulation and pattern reversal were performed in 26 patients with optic disc drusen. ERGs were normal in all patients. The mean VER amplitude was lower in the eyes with optic disc drusen than the mean amplitude of VERs in the normals but the interindividual variation was also so great in normals that the difference was not significant. The waveform of the major positive peak was quite often broad or split. VER latencies were usually in normal range although

Effects of arrested cerebellar development on locomotion in the rat. Cinematographic and electromyographic analysis.

The activity of the rat hindlimb during treadmill stepping was studied in normal adult rats and in rats in which cerebellar development was interfered with by early-postnatal focal X-irradiation. Based on cinematographic and electromyographic data from over 100 step cycles in 15 normal rats, correlations were made between joint angles and muscle activity to obtain a detailed picture of the locomotor pattern of the rat hindlimb. It was possible to relate most of the features of limb movement to activity in one or more of six primary flexors and extensors of the hindlimb. Compared with available

Field potentials in the olfactory bulb of the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri): evidence for a dendrodendritic inhibitory pathway.

Field potentials have been recorded from the olfactory bulb of the teleost fish, Salmo gairdneri. Stimulation of the olfactory nerve generates a complex wave pattern, which when recorded near the surface in the centre of the bulb consists of one positive and three negative components, P, N1, N2 and N3. The N1 has been attributed to depolarization of mitral cell dendrites, N2 to depolarization of the superficial dendrites of granules cells, and P to subsequent hyperpolarization of mitral cells. Possible origins of the N3 wave are discussed. Spikes from single units recorded in the mitral cell l

Noise-induced reduction of inner-ear microphonic response: dependence on body temperature.

The rate of reduction of chinchilla cochlear microphonic response with exposure to steady noise is less at lower body temperatures and greater at higher body temperatures. Before exposure to noise, this auditory response is invariant within the range of temperatures employed. The mechanism of reduction of cochlear response appears to involve processes sensitive to body temperature.

Modulation by stereoselective inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase of electromechanical coupling in the guinea-pig isolated renal pelvis.

1. The effects of the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers of the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) inhibitor, ketoprofen, have been investigated on the spontaneous activity of the guinea-pig isolated renal pelvis and on electrical field stimulation-(EFS) induced contractions of the guinea-pig ureter in comparison with the effects of the achiral COX inhibitor, indomethacin. 2. (S)-ketoprofen (0.1-100 microM) produced a concentration- and time-dependent inhibition of the spontaneous myogenic activity of the renal pelvis. The maximal inhibitory effect (% inhibition of motility index) averaged 29, 42, 47 and 56% inhibit

Hearing screening in healthy newborns: feasibility of different methods with regard to test time.

Clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions and automated auditory brainstem response are both considered appropriate hearing screening tools. The aim of this study was to compare their practicability with respect to test duration. In the first part of the study, clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded in 388 healthy infants on the newborn ward in the first days of life. To reduce false positive rates of screening, clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions combined with automated auditory brainstem response measurement (A-ABR, Algo 1E and Algo 2) were used in a second investigation. Fifty-five

Evaluation of TEOAE and DPOAE measurements for the assessment of auditory thresholds in sensorineural hearing loss.

Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) can be quantified concerning their amplitude and frequency. They are known to be diminished or absent in sensorineural hearing loss. It is therefore of interest how TEOAE and DPOAE correlate with the auditory threshold and whether the auditory threshold can be predicted by these variables. In a cross sectional study of 61 patients (102 ears) with sensorineural hearing loss, auditory threshold, tympanometry, stapedius reflexes, TEOAE and DPOAE were measured. Correlation coefficients of the hear

Phenotypic variation in neural sensory processing by deletion size, age, and sex in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by deletion or mutation of region 22q13.3, which includes the SHANK3 gene. Clinical descriptions of this population include severely impaired or absent expressive language, mildly dysmorphic features, neonatal hypotonia, developmental delays, intellectual impairments, and autistic-like traits including abnormal reactivity to sensory stimuli. Electroencephalography (EEG) has shown promise as a tool for identifying neurophysiological abnormalities in neurodevelopmental disorders. However, few EEG studies focused

Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Review of Surgical Outcome Predictors and Need for Multimodal Approach.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy is the most common cause of spinal cord injury in the elderly population in the developed world, and it sig … pear to be the most prognostic. In this context, electrophysiology findings (both motor and sensory evoked potentials) have shown some predictive capacity. However, large studies are lacking. Although multivariate models have been conducted using clinical and magnetic resonance imaging data, no multimodal prediction models are available that encompass the predictiv …

Persistent recruitment of somatosensory cortex during active maintenance of hand images in working memory.

Working memory (WM) supports temporary maintenance of task-relevant information. This process is associated with persistent activity in the sensory cortex processing the information (e.g., visual stimuli activate visual cortex). However, we argue here that more multifaceted stimuli moderate this sensory-locked activity and recruit distinctive cortices. Specifically, perception of bodies recruits somatosensory cortex (SCx) beyond early visual areas (suggesting embodiment processes). Here we explore persistent activation in processing areas beyond the sensory cortex initially relevant to the mod

Uncoupling N-acetylaspartate from brain pathology: implications for Canavan disease gene therapy.

N-Acetylaspartate (NAA) is the second most abundant organic metabolite in the brain, but its physiological significance remains enigmatic. Toxic NAA accumulation appears to be the key factor for neurological decline in Canavan disease-a fatal neurometabolic disorder caused by deficiency in the NAA-degrading enzyme aspartoacylase. To date clinical outcome of gene replacement therapy for this spongiform leukodystrophy has not met expectations. To identify the target tissue and cells for maximum anticipated treatment benefit, we employed comprehensive phenotyping of novel mouse models to assess c

Evoked pressure curves from the external anal sphincter following transcranial magnetic stimulation in healthy volunteers and patients with faecal incontinence.

AIM: The hypothesis was tested that evoked pressure curves (EPCs) after transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) would provide additional neuropathophysiological information on the descending pathways to the external anal sphincter (EAS) in patients with faecal incontinence (FI). METHOD: Twenty-five healthy subjects and 69 patients with FI were investigated. TMS was applied to the vertex, and EPCs were recorded with a probe placed through the EAS. TMS was performed with the EAS at rest and during contraction (facilitated responses). At least three responses were recorded for each modality. Cli
