Port site and distant metastases of gallbladder cancer after laparoscopic cholecystectomy diagnosed by positron emission tomography.

We report port site and distant metastases of unsuspected gallbladder cancer after laparoscopic cholecystectomy diagnosed by positron emission tomography (PET) in two patients. Patient 1, a 72-year-old woman was diagnosed as cholelithiasis and cholecystitis and received laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Unsuspected gallbladder cancer was discovered with histological result of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder infiltrating the entire wall. A PET scan using F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) before radical resection revealed residual tumor in the gallbladder fossa and rec

Improved detection of recurrent laryngeal tumor after radiotherapy using (18)FDG-PET as initial method.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Timely detection of recurrent laryngeal tumor after radiation is an important predictive factor for curation as well as preservation of laryngeal function. Direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia with taking of biopsies is the standard diagnostic procedure to detect recurrence when suspicion is raised. This, however, is an invasive and potentially damaging technique. Hence, a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, such as (18)FDG-PET to stratify patients for direct laryngoscopy could be useful. (18)FDG-PET is interpreted visually so that observer variation may affect c

A case of lymphocytic mastopathy requiring differential diagnosis from primary breast lymphoma.

Lymphocytic mastopathy is a benign breast disease characterized by dense fibrosis, lobular atrophy, and aggregates of lymphocytes in a periductal and perivascular distribution. The condition affects young to middle-aged women and frequently shows an association with diabetes mellitus or autoimmune disorders. Here, we report a case of the disease clinically and radiologically mimicking primary breast neoplasms. The patient was a 50-year-old woman without diabetes who presented with two firm lumps in her right breast. Breast imaging findings from mammography, ultrasonography, computed tomography

18Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer: a systematic review.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in industrialized countries. The overall mortality rate for lung cancer is high, and early diagnosis provides the best chance for survival. Diagnostic tests guide lung cancer management decisions, and clinicians increasingly use diagnostic imaging in an effort to improve the management of patients with lung cancer. This systematic review, an expansion of a health technology assessment conducted in 2001 by the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences, evaluates the accuracy and utility of 18fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomog

Chronic myoclonia of subcortical origin with antiglutamate receptor antibodies.

We report a 10-year-old girl with chronic nonprogressive continuous myoclonia with mild muscle weakness and dissociated sensory impairment of the ipsilateral side of myoclonic jerks. Irregular myoclonic jerks continuously appeared in the right upper limb. The jerk-locked back averaging of electroencephalographic activity failed to show any activity preceded by the muscle contraction. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and cervical spine revealed no abnormal findings. Single photon emission computed tomography showed an increased blood perfusion in the left thalamus. Lung cancer with isolated skip metastasis to an abdominal lymph node.

Adults and children with the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome demonstrate cognitive, social, and emotional impairments and high risk for schizophrenia. Work in mouse model of the 22q11.2 deletion provided compelling evidence for abnormal expression and processing of microRNAs. A major transcriptional effect of the microRNA dysregulation is upregulation of Emc10, a component of the ER membrane complex, which promotes membrane insertion of a subset of polytopic and tail-anchored membrane proteins. We previously uncovered a key contribution of EMC10 in mediating the behavioral phenotypes observed in 22q

Preclinical imaging of mammary intraepithelial neoplasia with positron emission tomography.

Small-animal imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) has become a valuable tool for evaluating preclinical models of breast cancer and other diseases. In this review, we examine a number of issues related to preclinical imaging studies with PET, using transgenic models of ductal carcinoma in situ and metastasis as specific examples. We discuss imaging components such as reconstruction, normalization, and extraction of quantitative parameters. We also analyze the effect of longitudinal correlations on cohort size and present some simple statistical techniques for determining cohort size

Oral contrast medium in PET/CT: should you or shouldn't you?

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that the use of computed tomography (CT) positive contrast agents has led to attenuation-induced artefacts on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) systems. Consequently, centres may withhold the use of such agents. Whilst there is theoretical evidence to support the aforementioned claim, the clinical relevance of the induced artefacts has not been widely established. Moreover, the potential benefits of bowel enhancement on PET/CT have yet to be formally evaluated. We therefore prospectively examined PET/CT studies to assess whether

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in pulmonary rheumatoid nodules.

A 60-year-old female patient with a 5-year history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presented with pulmonary nodules on chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT) scan. The positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrated mild fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in these nodules, which is characteristic of benign lesions. Histopathological correlation confirmed this. Although rheumatoid pulmonary nodules are benign, confirmation to exclude coincidental malignancy is very important. FDG-PET is a noninvasive imaging technique, which acts as a metabolic biopsy and can help in avoiding morbidity and cos

Attenuation of cue-induced cigarette craving and anterior cingulate cortex activation in bupropion-treated smokers: a preliminary study.

In untreated smokers, exposure to cigarette-related cues increases both the intensity of cigarette craving and relative glucose metabolism of the perigenual/ventral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Given that treatment with bupropion HCl reduces overall cigarette craving levels in nicotine dependent subjects, we performed a preliminary study of smokers to determine if bupropion HCl treatment attenuates cue-induced cigarette craving and associated brain metabolic activation. Thirty-seven, otherwise healthy smokers (20 untreated and 17 who had received open-label treatment with bupropion HCl) un
