Longitudinal analysis of regional grey matter loss in Huntington disease: effects of the length of the expanded CAG repeat.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms guiding the progression of neuronal damage in patients with Huntington disease (HD) are not completely understood … ith a larger UHDRS score exhibited selective atrophy of the caudate, thalamus, midbrain, insula and frontal lobes. Patients with longer, expanded CAG repeat sequences showed faster rates and more widespread atrophy, particularly those patients with more than 55 expanded CAG repeats. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm that brain atrophy progresses after the cl …

[MRI study of three siblings of suspicious Sjögren-Larsson syndrome].

We report the characteristics of high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of three siblings with hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), probably of autosomal recessive inheritance. The proband was a 25-year-old woman who manifested slowly progressive spastic paraplegia, mental deficit, decayed teeth since her childhood. The siblings of the proband, 29-year-old woman and 27-year-old man, also showed the same clinical course as hers, and the symptoms are more severe in elder siblings. The proband solely had ichthyosis on her neck and lower thighs, which suggested Sjögren-Larsson syndrome. Sagit

[Computed tomographic analysis of frontal recess region].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to observe the CT imaging features of the frontal recess regional. METHOD: Eighty-two patients were undergone spiral computed tomography (CT). Then multiplanar reconstruction images were made using standard triplanar reconstruction protocol on a computer workstation. RESULT: The prevalence of agger nasi cell was 87.8% (144/164). One hundred and forty-five (89%, 145/164) uncinate processes had one superior attachment for each uncinate process. The others had two superior attachments for each uncinate process. The uncinate process' single superior attach

Exploring brain structural effects of dopaminergic antagonism and partial agonism in antipsychotic-naïve patients with first-episode psychosis using normative modeling.

AIM: Schizophrenia is associated with subtle brain structural alterations, but separating disease from medication effects is challenging. An … razole. After 6 months, and 1 and 2 years, the striatal changes abated but cortical thinning in the frontal lobes emerged. CONCLUSIONS: Both partial D2R agonism and D2R antagonism appear linked to striatal volume increases; however, changes appear transient. Conversely, frontal thinning occurs over time and appears less closely linked to antipsychotic treatme …

Correlation Between Neuroimaging and Neuropathologic Findings in Pediatric ECMO Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Neurologic complications are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygen … roimaging. Neuropathology revealed frequent ischemic and hemorrhagic injuries, most commonly in the frontal lobes, deep grey matter, and temporal lobes. Severe injury was more frequent in venoarterial ECMO and in infants/toddlers. NIS scores strongly correlated with global and regional histopathologic severity, particularly in frontal, temporal, and deep grey …

The interaction of age and total lifetime drinks is associated with regional cortical perfusion and thickness in healthy adults with low-level alcohol consumption.

Low-level alcohol consumption at or below current guidelines (≤1 standard drink equivalent/day for females, ≤2 standard drink equivalents/day for males) has been proposed to carry minimal systemic health risks. The neurobiological correlates of low-level drinking in healthy adults are not well characterized. To date, no study has concurrently assessed the associations of low-level alcohol consumption, modeled as a continuous rather than categorical variable, with regional brain perfusion (blood flow) and morphometrics in healthy, non-smoking adults. This study examined the associations between

Altered structural connectivity in epilepsy with myoclonic atonic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy with myoclonic-atonic seizure (EMAS) is a rare generalized epilepsy in young children associated with various neurodevelopmental and epileptic outcomes. Although conventional brain imaging is usually normal, we previously identified morphometric alterations in the frontal lobes and cerebellum. We here investigated structural connectivity differences between EMAS patients and healthy subjects several years after epilepsy onset and explored their associations with epilepsy severity and cognitive performance. METHODS: Thirteen EMAS patients (4 females, 5-14 years) and 14 matc…

Long-term cerebral atrophy and cognitive function in patients recovering from progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Long-term brain atrophy and cognitive function have rarely been reported in patients without pre-existing brain disorders who survived progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). CASE PRESENTATION: Patient 1 was a 38-year-old woman with late-onset combined immunodeficiency, who presented with progressive cognitive decline and right hemiparesis. Brain MRI revealed a hyperintense lesion in the left frontal lobe. Patient 2 was a 53-year-old man in remission from follicular lymphoma, who experienced cognitive deterioration and displayed hyperintense signals in the left frontal a…

Longer TEs led to greater artifact severity in the brainstem, temporal, occipital, and frontal lobes (P < 0.02), but not in parietal lobes (P > 0.05). Kappa agreement for IQS was 0.76. CONCLUSION: TE significantly affects contrast and artifacts in 7-T T2*-weighted imaging. TEs between 20 and 30 ms offer the best balance between tissue contrast an …

Current understanding of magnetic resonance imaging biomarkers and memory in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is caused by a cascade of changes to brain integrity. Neuroimaging biomarkers are important in diagnosis and monitoring the effects of interventions. As memory impairments are among the first symptoms of AD, the relationship between imaging findings and memory deficits is important in biomarker research. The most established magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding is hippocampal atrophy, which is related to memory decline and currently used as a diagnostic criterion for AD. While the medial temporal lobes are impacted early by the spread of neurofibrillary tangles, ot
