On the basis of a survey on 437 members of self-help groups (Gamblers Anonymous) in Germany, slot machine gamblers were compared with casino gamblers on such variables as sociodemographic data, gambling behaviour, financial expenditure, emotional experience while gambling, symptoms of pathological gambling, psychosocial consequences and gambling related delinquency. Piercing the earlobes has increased in popularity among males in recent years. This habit would be expected to increase the incidence of nickel and cobalt sensitization. Patch testing with nickel sulfate and cobalt chloride was performed in 520 young Swedish men doing compulsory military service. The overall frequency of nickel/cobalt positive tests was 4.2%. The prevalence of nickel/cobalt positive tests was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in 152 men with pierced earlobes (7.9%) than in those 368 with unpierced earlobes (2.7%). The management and follow-up of five patients with asymptomatic compulsive water drinking is described. Three out of the five patients were female and two were male. The age range was 6 to 20 months. All the patients presented with polyuria or polydipsia and urine osmolalities of 39 to 112 mOsm/L. The daily fluid intake ranged from 3.5 to 5 L, and the urine output was 11 to 14 mL/kg/hr. Significant improvement was noticed after a gradual weaning process. As fluid intake returned to normal, urine osmolalities reached values between 210 and 500 mOsm/L after 4 weeks, and between 630 and 800 mOsm/

Following clinical observations showing that opiates are sometimes not consistently administered for chronic cancer pain, a survey was conducted among 1200 physicians in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Fifty-one children under the age of 10 years admitted to a general hospital in Trinidad had a confirmed diagnosis of malrotation of the intestines. This was the primary diagnosis in 20 cases. The use of metamizole is controversial, as reflected in the very different national regulations affecting it.
