Psychological, agricultural, and socioeconomic risk factors in farmers with and without completed suicide.

BACKGROUND: Farming is an occupation with higher risk for suicide compared to other occupations, and Indians are no exception. Karnataka state is only second after Maharashtra in the frequency/prevalence of farmers' suicide in India. Suicide among farmers is multidimensional in nature. AIM: To study the psychological, agricultural, and socioeconomic risk factors in farmers who had completed suicide and farmers in the same locality who had not/never attempted suicide. METHODS: Families of farmers, aged between 18 and 60 years, who had died by suicide, were recruited as cases. Age- and gender-

Evaluation of the Neurocognitive Affective Model for the Prediction of Habitual 24-Hour Physical Behavior.

Physical activity (PA) is recognized for its health benefits, including reduced risks of noncommunicable diseases. Despite recommendations for PA, global inactivity rates remain high. The neurocognitive-affective model proposes that executive functions and affective responses to PA may influence habitual PA behavior. This cross-sectional study aimed to test the model's pathways, hypothesizing that (A) executive functions are associated with PA-induced affective responses, (B) affective responses are associated with habitual PA, and (C) the association between executive functions and PA. This s

Seroprevalence and risk factors associated with Cystic echinococcosis among nomadic, rural, and urban communities in Northwestern Iran.

Hydatid disease or hydatid cysticercosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Dogs are definitive hosts, while humans and livestock, such as sheep and cattle, are intermediate hosts for the parasite. Infection occurs when contaminated food is ingested. This neglected disease is prevalent in temperate regions, mainly where sheep farming is common, with seroprevalence in Iran ranging from 1.6% to over 20%. The current study assesses human CE prevalence among various demographics in East Azerbaijan, Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1912 individual

Detecting and Salvaging Head Impacts with Decoupling Artifacts from Instrumented Mouthguards.

In response to growing evidence that repetitive head impact exposure and concussions can lead to long-term health consequences, many research studies are attempting to quantify the frequency and severity of head impacts incurred in various sports and occupations. The most popular apparatus for doing so is the instrumented mouthguard (iMG). While these devices hold greater promise of head kinematic accuracy than their helmet-mounted predecessors, data artifacts related to iMG decoupling still plague results. We recreated iMG decoupling artifacts in a laboratory test series using an iMG fit to a

Therapeutic Effect of Movement Control Exercises Combined With Traditional Physiotherapeutic Rehabilitation in A Patient Suffering With Non-Specific Low Back Pain: A Case Report.

Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint among individuals engaged in physically demanding occupations, such as construction workers, luggage lifters, manual laborers, and drivers. One of the main problems facing modern healthcare is treating these people. The identification of distinct patient subgroups with non-specific LBP and the development of specialized, more effective therapies are of crucial significance to enhancing evaluation and treatment regimens. This case report describes the evaluation and management of non-specific LBP in a male construction worker who complained of severe lo

Distribution changes of cutaneous leishmaniasis: A postulated risk of disease transmission in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Leishmaniasis is caused by various species of Leishmania. Approximately 20 of them are pathogenic to mammals. In Sri Lanka, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an established vector-borne disease. CL originates and spreads mainly through sand fly bite in many endemic countries. Objective of the present study was to compare the geographical distribution and demographic features of CL cases in 2014 and 2016 in Hambantota district, Sri Lanka. METHODS: The patients who were presented to the Tangalle Base Hospital from June to December in 2014 and 2016 were examined and a descri

Effect of passive shoulder exoskeleton support during working with arms over shoulder level.

Musculoskeletal disorders have the highest prevalence of work-related health problems. Due to the aging population, the prevalence of shoulder pain in workers in physically demanding occupations is increasing, thereby causing rising costs to society and underlining the need for preventive technologies. Wearable support structures are designed to reduce the physical work load during physically demanding tasks. Here, we evaluate the physiological benefit of the DeltaSuit, a novel passive shoulder exoskeleton, using an assessment framework that conforms to the approach proposed in the literature.

Impact of COVID-19 on Ethnically Minoritised Carers in UK's Care Home Settings: a Systematic Scoping Review.

COVID-19 has impacted disproportionately two groups in the UK: healthcare workers and people from ethnically minoritised groups. However, there is a lack of evidence on how COVID-19 affected ethnically minoritised carers in care homes. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the available evidence regarding the impact of COVID-19 on ethnically minoritised carers in UK. The relevant records were systematically searched in Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register and WHO COVID-19 global literature. A total of 3164 records were retrieved. Following duplicate elimination and abstract, title, and ful

A 43-year of human thermal comfort in Central Africa.

In this study, the human thermal stress was quantified across Central Africa (C.A.) using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Although many of the documented studies on the use of UTCI in relation to human health are currently restricted to countries in the northern hemisphere, this contribution constitutes a prerequisite of information for future research in the region. To mitigate the problem of lack of field data in the Central African sub-region, we downloaded UTCI data via the ERA5 reanalysis portal. Based on this data source, we have explored the spatiotemporal characteristics an

Healthy working life expectancy at age 50 for people with and without osteoarthritis in local and national English populations.

Retirement ages are rising in many countries to offset the challenges of population ageing, but osteoarthritis is an age-associated disease that is becoming more prevalent and may limit capacity to work until older ages. We aimed to assess the impact of osteoarthritis on healthy working life expectancy (HWLE) by comparing HWLE for people with and without osteoarthritis from ages 50 and 65 nationally and in a local area in England. Mortality-linked data for adults aged ≥ 50 years were used from six waves (2002-13) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and from three time points of the Nor

Harmonisation and Between-Country Differences of the Lifetime of Experiences Questionnaire in Older Adults.

Background: The Lifetime of Experiences Questionnaire (LEQ) assesses complex mental activity across the life-course and has been associated with brain and cognitive health. The different education systems and occupation classifications across countries represent a challenge for international comparisons. The objectives of this study were four-fold: to adapt and harmonise the LEQ across four European countries, assess its validity across countries, explore its association with brain and cognition and begin to investigate between-country differences in life-course mental activities. Method: The

Consequences of Exposure to Violence, Aggression, and Sexual Harassment in Private Security Work: A Mediation Model.

While exposure to violence and aggression is well known for its detrimental effects on employees' health as well as organizational outcomes, certain high-risk work domains have scarcely been researched. Thus, this study set out to determine negative consequences of work-related exposure to four forms of harmful behaviors in private security. In a sample of 487 German-speaking security guards, 23% had experienced outsider-initiated violence, 56% aggressive acts, 30% vicarious violent acts, and 3% were sexually harassed over the past 12 months. Additionally, 19% reported substantial to extreme w

Q Fever in Rural Australia: Education Versus Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is an infection caused by Coxiella burnetii, a zoonotic disease acquired from both wild and domestic animals. Northern rural New South Wales (NSW) communities in Australia have an increased risk of exposure to this organism. Both the acute and chronic phases of the infection are associated with significant morbidity, which is often increased by delayed recognition and treatment. Recent termination of vaccination programs in Australia may increase the risk of infection in these populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the current knowledge ba

Evidence for a teratogenic risk in the offspring of health personnel exposed to ionizing radiation?!

BACKGROUND: The evidence concerning safety of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation on teratogenic effects mainly relies on animal models, disaster epidemiology and experience in cancer etiology. Following an explorative result on maternal exposure in medical occupations we conducted a feasibility study, addressing congenital anomalies (CA) in the offspring of health workers potentially exposed to radiation. METHODS: In a prospective follow-up study, we enrolled women, identified by mandatory registration at the office of radiation protection as wearing a dosimeter. The participating wo
