A 61-year-old female patient underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which confirmed the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-positive nodular gastritis (NG). Routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after H. pylori eradication revealed atrophic changes of the corpus, having gradually progressed over the 10 years after successful eradication. Serological and biopsy specimen examination showed hypergastrinemia (1200 pg/mL), positive anti-parietal cell antibody (with a titer of more 160), and endocrine cell micronests after 11 years of H. pylori eradication. The patient was diagnosed …

Helicobacter pylori remains a major health problem worldwide, causing considerable morbidity and mortality due to peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. These guidelines constitute an update of the previous "Recommendations on the diagnosis and management of Helicobacter pylori infection" issued in 2014. They have been developed by a Task Force organized by the Governing Board of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology. They discuss, with particular emphasis on new scientific data covering papers published since 2014: the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic principles and criteria…

PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is an identified risk factor for pediatric chronic gastritis (PCG), but its impact on gastric juice microbiota (GJM) remains to be further elucidated in PCG. This study aimed to analyze and compare the microbial communities and microbial interactive networks of GJM in PCG that clinically tested positive and negative for HP (HP+ and HP-, respectively).
METHODS: A total of 45 PCG patients aged from 6 to 16 years were recruited, including 20 HP+ and 25 HP- patients tested by culture and rapid urease test. Gastric juice samples were collected from these…

Helicobacter pylori-induced chronic gastritis represents a well-established risk factor for gastric cancer (GC). However, the mechanism by which chronic inflammation caused by H. pylori induces the development of GC is unclear. H. pylori can influence host cell signalling pathways to induce gastric disease development and mediate cancer promotion and progression. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), play a key role in the gastrointestinal innate immune response, and their signalling has been implicated in the pathogenesis of an increasing number of inflammation-…

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most prevalent infections, which can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and even gastric cancer. Prompt diagnosis and subsequent eradication are essential. Many commercially available H. pylori stool antigen diagnostic kits are used. However, the diagnostic performance of these tests has not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate two commercial rapid H. pylori Stool Antigen-Lateral Flow Immunochromatography Assay kits (HpSA-LFIA).
METHODOLOGY: A total of 88 adult patients with dyspeptic symptoms were included in the stu…

Helicobacter species are classified as gastric or enterohepatic according to their habitat. Among enterohepatic Helicobacter species, which inhabit the intestine, colon, and liver, Helicobacter cinaedi has been most frequently isolated from humans. H. cinaedi often causes bacteremia and cellulitis in immunocompromised hosts. Here, we focused on the H. cinaedi autotransporter protein A (HcaA), a novel virulence factor in H. cinaedi. We discovered that HcaA contributes to cell adhesion via its Arg-Gly-Asp motif. Furthermore, in animal experiments, bacterial colonization was reduced in mice infec…

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in the early 1980s by Nobel Prize winners in medicine Robin Warren and Barry Marshall led to a revolution in physiopathology and consequently in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease. Subsequently, H. pylori has also been linked to non-gastrointestinal diseases, such as autoimmune thrombocytopenia, acne rosacea, and Raynaud's syndrome. In addition, several studies have shown an association with cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. Our narrative review aims to investigate the connection between H. pylori infection, gut microbiota, and extr…

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) can cause gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and many other gastrointestinal diseases. The 14-day neo-dual therapy for H pylori is considered by most countries to have good eradication rates, while the 7- and 10-day studies have been more widely explored, however, we find that their results are different. The applicability of the shorter and less expensive 10-day neo-dual therapy to our country has not yet been confirmed.
METHODS: The patients were divided into 3 groups of 200 each by randomization method. Group A: patients received vonoprazan…

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a frequent chronic infection. Persistent infection is the strongest risk factor for developing gastric complications leading to gastric cancer. The antibiotic resistance of current anti-H. pylori drugs lead to the search for novel candidates from medicinal plants. Traditionally, Corydalis yanhusuo (Y.H. Chou & Chun C.Hsu) W.T. Wang ex Z.Y. Su & C.Y. Wu (Papaveraceae) has been used for the treatment of digestive system diseases in China. So, it's essential to explore and confirm the anti-H. pylori activity of C. yanhus…

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a widespread helical Gram-negative bacterium, which causes a variety of stomach disorders, such as peptic ulcer, chronic atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer. This microbe frequently colonizes the mucosal layer of the human stomach and survives in the inhospitable microenvironment, by adapting to this hostile milieu.
AREAS COVERED: In this extensive review, we describe conventional antibiotic treatment regimens used against H. pylori including, empirical, tailored, and salvage therapies. Then, we present state-of-the-art information about reasons for tre…

Helicobacter pylori infection is strongly associated with gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer disease and gastric carcinoma. The virulence of H. pylori strains increases with the presence of the pathogenicity island PAI, which encodes a Type 4 Secretion System and the oncoprotein CagA. Two major CagA types can be distinguished by differences in the repetitive EPIYA region in the C-terminal sequence; the more virulent East Asian CagA type with EPIYA-A, -B, and -D motifs and the Western CagA type with EPIYA-A, -B, and C motifs, the virulence of which is associated with the multitude of EPIYA-C motif…

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonization is prevalent all over the world, and it is associated with low socioeconomic status, poor hygiene, and overcrowding. Its eradication is important since it is an etiologic agent for gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric carcinoma, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Different regimens are available for the eradication of H. pylori and include triple therapy and sequential therapy. Our study aims to compare the efficacy of triple therapy versus sequential therapy in the eradication of H. pylori.

BACKGROUND: Most trace elements are inhibited by Helicobacter pylori-infection, and variations in specific element levels are linked to the development of stomach cancer. This is the first study to show the relationship between serum and tissue concentrations of twenty-five trace elements and H. pylori infection status. This study purposed to define serum and tissue trace element levels of 25 healthy individuals with Helicobacter pylori-positive gastritis and Helicobacter pylori-negative gastritis and to reveal their relationship with the disease.
METHODS: Study groups consisted of sixty-two …

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication therapy is known to increase the platelet count, but in immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), the effect of H. pylori infection on the response to treatment is not clear. This study aims to determine whether the response to the first-line treatment is affected by the states of H. pylori-positivity and -negativity in ITP patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult newly diagnosed or chronic ITP patients who had not received eradication therapy for H. pylori infection were included. Characteristics of the patients, presence and severity of bleed…

This case documents a previously undescribed presentation of Helicobacter spp. gastritis. An 8-year-old female spayed golden retriever with chronic vomiting was found to have a cluster of multiple, round, well-defined, hypoechoic foci of varying sizes surrounded by gas within the lumen of the stomach on ultrasonographic examination. Further endoscopic examination revealed multiple raised mass-like lesions in the fundus on endoscopic examination. Histopathological findings were consistent with Helicobacter spp. infection. The dog was treated with both amoxicillin 400 mg and clarithromycin 180 m…

Helicobacter pylori infections, as one of the most prevalent among humans, are generally acquired during childhood, and are one of the main causes of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. A bacterial culture from a gastric biopsy is the gold standard and is the only method that has 100% specificity. However, its sensitivity varies, depending on experience of the laboratory staff, applied culture media, specimen transport conditions, biopsy site, and quality of the sample. The same factors compromise all invasive methods and a culture-based H. pylori infection diagnostic, as well as a rec…
