Willingness to use HIV Self-Testing and its Influencing Factors Among a MSM Community in the North Sulawesi Region of Indonesia.

The adoption of HIVST testing is confronted with significant challenges, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) as a key population. This study aims to investigate factors influencing the decision to use HIVST among MSM in Indonesia. A cross-sectional study (July-September 2024) examined factors influencing willingness to use HIV self-testing (HIVST) among MSM in the North Sulawesi region. Participants (n=200), recruited via NGOs and WhatsApp, were ≥17 years and had recent same-sex activity. HIVST kits were distributed by NGO staff who also provided data collection, counseling, and

Drug Addiction in Gay and Bisexual Men Living with HIV Engaged in Sexualized Drug Use: Recent Drug Use, Polydrug and Depressive Symptoms as Predictors.

Evidence shows that engaging in sexualized drug use (SDU) can be associated with sexual health problems and poor mental health. However, the prevalence of drug-related problems associated with SDU remains unclear. Our study aimed to examine the prevalence and associated factors of drug-related problems and drug dependence in a sample of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men living with HIV (HIV + GBMSM). We included 101 HIV + GBMSM who had engaged in SDU in the last year. Participants completed an online survey featuring a validated questionnaire (the DUDIT test) to assess the ris

Preferences for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Products and Delivery Models Among Cisgender Men, Transgender Persons, and Nonbinary Individuals Who Have Sex With Men in Seattle, Washington: A Discrete Choice Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Understanding preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) products and delivery models could better meet the needs of populations likely to benefit from PrEP and ultimately increase uptake. SETTING: Public Health-Seattle & King County Sexual Health Clinic. METHODS: Between August 2022 and December 2023, a convenience sample of individuals seeking HIV testing and participating in Project DETECT2 completed a discrete choice experiment (DCE). We used a D-efficient blocked fractional design and asked participants to choose between 2 hypothetical PrEP options composed of 5 att

Comparison of Self-Reported Substance Use with Outcomes of Urine Testing among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Africa Participating in HPTN 075.

Research linking substance use with HIV risk behaviors and antiretroviral therapy adherence is typically based on self-reported data. However, studies in high-income countries show that men who have sex with men (MSM) often underreport substance use when compared to objective biological testing. Such comparisons have not been conducted among MSM in sub-Saharan Africa. We compared self-reported and objectively measured substance use among MSM participating in HPTN 075, a multi-site observational cohort study conducted in Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa. Urine samples (n = 734) from 382 particip

Discussion of HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections With Sex Partners of Nigerian Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women: Implications for Interventions to Promote Safer Sex Practices.

BACKGROUND: Discussion of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among sex partners facilitates risk reduction. We evaluated HIV/STI-related communications, including broad assessment of any self-reported discussion of the topic and specific discussion of each partner's HIV status, among a historically marginalized and presently criminalized community of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in Nigeria. METHODS: From 2013 to 2018, we enrolled SGM aged 18+ years in Lagos or 16+ years in Abuja who reported anal sex with men. At enrollment and 3-, 9-, and 15-month follow-up visits, participa

Effects of intimate partner violence and homophobic bullying on ART adherence among young Thai men who have sex with men: a causal mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy is crucial for determining health outcomes and secondary HIV transmission among people living with HIV/AIDS. Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) living with HIV are often challenged by the prevailing experiences of psychosocial stressors such as intimate partner violence and homophobic bullying, which may negatively affect their HIV care engagement. METHODS: This study is the first to utilize a prospective cohort design (N = 185) involving YMSM living with HIV in Thailand. We examined the effects of intimate partner violence and homophobic bu

Validation of the Perceived Barriers to Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence (PEDIA) Scale Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender and Nonbinary Persons: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of people living with HIV in Brazil have suboptimal adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Theoretical models of health behaviors and objective evidence support the role of perceived barriers in hindering health behaviors. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the perceived barriers to ART adherence (PEDIA) scale among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) persons in Brazil. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, we evaluated the factor structure, construct validity, con

Oral Rapid Self-Testing Intention for HIV Sexual Health Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men in Taiwan: A Theory-Driven Comparison of HIV Never-Testers and Ever-Testers.

According to national statistics, young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are at disproportionately higher risk for HIV infection in Taiwan, compared with older age groups, women, and heterosexual men. To improve HIV sexual health care, oral rapid self-testing for HIV (ORST) was recently introduced and became available in Taiwan on a limited scale. However, little is known about YMSM's intention to use ORST, and whether and how YMSM with different HIV testing experiences differ in their ORST intention. Accordingly, an anonymous online survey was conducted among YMSM in Taiwan (N = 2,063). Build

Correlation between sexual behavior and preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis modality among men who have sex with men: a cross-sectional analysis.

Demographic, behavioral, and clinical characteristics have been found to be associated with willingness to use and preferences for different HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) modalities. Limited data are available, however, describing how sexual behavior characteristics affect willingness to use and preferences for PrEP. Given the different clinical characteristics of available PrEP modalities (i.e., daily oral, on-demand oral, long-acting injectable), an individual's sexual behavior (i.e., number of partners, partner characteristics) might affect their preferences for PrEP. We conducted a c

HCV infection, risk factors and PrEP use among HIV-negative MSM and TW at a community health centre.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is widely reported in urban cohorts of HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), with less data on HIV-negative MSM. High HCV incidence has been reported in cohorts of HIV-negative MSM using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but no previous studies have systematically offered HCV screening to PrEP users and non-PrEP users. METHODS: We offered point-of-care serology and/or PCR HCV screening to HIV-negative MSM and transgender women (TW) attending a peer-led community sexual health centre in Barcelona, Spain. We estimated

Pathways from Sexual Stigma to Mpox Preventive Intentions: A Mediation Analysis Guided by the Reasoned Action Approach.

This study examined how three dimensions of sexual stigma (enacted, felt, and internalized) were related to mpox preventive intentions among gay and bisexual men (GBM) through mediating pathways outlined by the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA). Data were collected from 439 GBM via an online survey during the peak of the 2022 mpox outbreak in the U.S. Path analysis examined associations among sexual stigma dimensions and mpox preventive intentions mediated through RAA behavioral predictors, including instrumental attitude, experiential attitude, injunctive norm, descriptive norm, capacity, and au

Therapeutic drug monitoring of tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine in oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users who have undergone gastrointestinal surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV, but its efficacy depends on adequate absorption of drug, which may decrease following gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS: Clinicians across eight Genito-urinary Medicine clinics in the United Kingdom submitted data on PrEP users with history of gastrointestinal surgery who were referred to a national complex PrEP multi-disciplinary team between June 2021 and April 2023. Anonymised data were submitted on demographics, surgical history, PrEP regimen, and results of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and HI

Efficacy of Behavioral Intervention, Text Messaging, and Extended Intervention to Address Alcohol Misuse in Sexual Minority Men with HIV: A Factorial Randomized Clinical Trial.

This clinical trial examined the individual and combined effects of three different approaches to reducing alcohol misuse among a sample of sexual minority men (SMM) with HIV. Specifically, we used a 2 × 2 × 2 randomized factorial design to compare: (a) behavioral intervention based in motivational interviewing (MI) vs. brief intervention (BI), (b) interactive text messaging (ITM) for alcohol use vs. no ITM, and (c) extended intervention (EI) length of nine months vs. a one-month intervention duration. Participants (N = 188) were SMM with HIV and alcohol misuse recruited in Miami, FL, and Bost

The Experience of Chemsex and Accessing Medical Care for Gay, Bisexual and Other MSM in Russia: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.

The use of illicit drugs during sex (Chemsex) in gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men (GBMSM) has been a challenge for sexual health services globally. In Russia, HIV remains a significant public health concern and access to prevention and treatment services is limited. Little is known about the nature of Chemsex and the challenges GBMSM practicing Chemsex in Russia face when accessing medical care. This study explored GBMSM's experience with Chemsex and access to medical care. We conducted three focus groups with GBMSM (n = 19) based in Moscow and Yekaterinburg in December 2020. The fo

Lack of evidence of acute HEV infections as a sexually transmitted disease: Data from a German cohort of PrEP users.

BACKGROUND: While the sexual transmissibility of HAV in MSM has been extensively described, the potential for sexual transmission of HEV has not been definitively established. Although HEV has been detected in the ejaculate of chronically infected men, studies among MSM PrEP users in France did not observe an elevated anti-HEV seroprevalence as an indicator of increased exposure risk by sexual intercourse. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 111 unselected PrEP users and 111 age- and sex-matched blood donors were tested for anti-HEV IgG, IgM and HEV (PCR). Of the participants 79/111 (71 %) respo

Can platform use patterns be an indicator of HIV-related risk and sub-group heterogeneity among men who have sex with men in Singapore: a latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Low-level HIV epidemic settings like Singapore face the challenge of reaching men at-risk who have less contact with programmes. We investigated patterns of meeting platform use by men seeking male sexual partners (MSM) as potential marker of risk to differentiate sub-groups for interventions. METHODS: Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was applied to a survey sample of MSM recruited from bars/clubs, saunas and a smartphone application, using purposive sampling. The best-fit LCA model which identified homogeneous sub-groups with similar patterns of meeting platform was factored in mult

Slamsex as slow edgework: Sexualized drug use and harm reduction in post-AIDS Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-2010s, slamsex-sexualized drug use involving intravenously injecting meth-has rapidly emerged in metropolitan gay communities as a sociosexual practice necessitating harm reduction interventions. However, its impact on gay men's sociosexual lives and HIV technologies is not well understood. This paper addresses this gap by investigating two intertwined temporal dimensions of slamsex, viewing it as a form of slow edgework in post-AIDS Taiwan. METHODS: Ethnographic research was conducted in Taiwan between 2022 and 2024, involving 30 interviews with gay men who practice
