A Scoping Review of Tobacco Control Health Communication in Africa: Moving towards Involving Young People.

Health communication has been highlighted as a cost-effective preventive intervention in Africa, where the prevalence of tobacco use is still relatively low compared to other World Health Organization (WHO) regions. This scoping review aimed to examine tobacco control health communication interventions in Africa. The review was guided by the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Data was extracted from 20 peer-reviewed papers, WHO Global Health Observatory on anti-tobacco mass-media campaigns for 54 African countries, and 6 WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control reports on Article 12. Data extraction inf

With life there is motion. Activity biomarkers signal important health and performance outcomes.

Measures of human motion provide a rich source of health and physiological status information. This paper provides examples of motion-based biomarkers in the form of patterns of movement, quantified physical activity, and characteristic gaits that can now be assessed with practical measurement technologies and rapidly evolving physiological models and algorithms, with research advances fed by the increasing access to motion data and associated contextual information. Quantification of physical activity has progressed from step counts to good estimates of energy expenditure, useful to weight ma

Asthma symptoms, spirometry and air pollution exposure in schoolchildren in an informal settlement and an affluent area of Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although 1 billion people live in informal (slum) settlements, the consequences for respiratory health of living in these settlements remain largely unknown. This study investigated whether children living in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya are at increased risk of asthma symptoms. METHODS: Children attending schools in Mukuru (an informal settlement in Nairobi) and a more affluent area (Buruburu) were compared. Questionnaires quantified respiratory symptoms and environmental exposures; spirometry was performed; personal exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) was estimate

Providing Care to People Living with a Chronic Hematological Malignancy: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis of Informal Carers' Experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic hematological malignancies such as multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), indolent B-cell lymphomas, and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have seen significant advances in treatment. Treatment developments have resulted in patients living for many years, often between periods of being acutely unwell, relapses, and remission. Informal carers play a major role in supporting patients through the uncertain and long illness trajectory. This qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) aims to synthesize qualitative research evidence on the experiences of informal carers car

Dental Problems and Prophylactic Care in Cats-Knowledge and Perceptions among Swedish Cat Owners and Communication by Veterinary Care Staff.

Dental problems are increasingly recognised in cats although many problems are preventable by tooth brushing. However, the knowledge level and preventive measures performed by owners are unclear. Additionally, there is a shortage of information on the communication by veterinary care staff to owners on dental health and prophylaxis in cats. The aim was to describe the knowledge and perceptions among Swedish cat owners and the communication by veterinary care staff on dental problems and prevention in cats. We distributed two electronic surveys; to cat owners and care staff, respectively. Of th

Being a refugee or having a refugee status? Birthweight and gestational age outcomes among offspring of immigrant mothers in Sweden.

Aims: to evaluate whether the information on refugee status based on the residence permit is a useful source of information for perinatal health surveillance. Methods: Using the Swedish population registers (1997-2012), we use multinomial regression models to assess the associations between migration status (refugee and non-refugee) and birth outcomes derived from birthweight and gestational age: low birthweight (LBW) (<2500 g), macrosomia (≥4000 g); preterm: (<37 w) and post-term (≥42 w). The Swedish-born population was used as a reference group. Results: Compared to the Swedish-born populati

Drug therapies for chronic hepatitis C infection: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Before 2011, pegylated interferon plus ribavirin was the standard therapy for chronic hepatitis C. Interferon-free direct-acting antiviral agents were then approved. Although these treatments appear to be more effective, they are substantially more expensive. In anticipation of the need for information regarding the comparative cost-effectiveness of new regimens in a recent therapeutic review, we conducted the analysis to inform listing decision in Canada. METHODS: A state-transition model was developed in the form of a cost-utility analysis. Regimens included in the analysis were

Restoration of Hindlimb Movements after Complete Spinal Cord Injury Using Brain-Controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Single neuron and local field potential signals recorded in the primary motor cortex have been repeatedly demonstrated as viable control signals for multi-degree-of-freedom actuators. Although the primary source of these signals has been fore/upper limb motor regions, recent evidence suggests that neural adaptation underlying neuroprosthetic control is generalizable across cortex, including hindlimb sensorimotor cortex. Here, adult rats underwent a longitudinal study that included a hindlimb pedal press task in response to cues for specific durations, followed by brain machine interface (BMI)

Residential relocation and change in social capital: A natural experiment from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

Social connections in the community ("social capital") represent an important source of resilience in the aftermath of major disasters. However, little is known about how residential relocation due to housing destruction affects survivors' social capital. We examined changes in social capital among survivors of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. People who lost their homes were resettled to new locations by two primary means: (i) group relocation to public temporary trailer housing or (ii) individual relocation, in which victims moved into government-provided housing by lottery

Real-world echocardiography in patients referred for mitral valve surgery: the gap between guidelines and clinical practice.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a common disorder for which mitral valve surgery is an established therapy. Although surgical indications are clearly defined for the management of valvular heart disease, a gap exists between current guidelines and their effective application. The study aim was to provide an insight into the diagnostic information provided for cardiac surgeons before performing mitral valve surgery. METHODS: The source documents and echocardiographic studies of 100 patients, referred by nine hospitals, were screened for arguments for MR severity j

GET WELL: an automated surveillance system for gaining new epidemiological knowledge.

BACKGROUND: The assumption behind the presented work is that the information people search for on the internet reflects the disease status in society. By having access to this source of information, epidemiologists can get a valuable complement to the traditional surveillance and potentially get new and timely epidemiological insights. For this purpose, the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control collaborates with a medical web site in Sweden. METHODS: We built an application consisting of two conceptual parts. One part allows for trends, based on user specified requests, to be extra

Barriers to starting ART and how they can be overcome: individual and operational factors associated with early and late start of treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Despite expanding access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Sub-Saharan Africa, there are few data on patients' perceptions about starting ART to explore issues affecting decisions to start ART in eligible individuals during the ART roll out. METHODS: We studied patterns of ART uptake for 957 participants in a trial of cryptococcal disease prevention and performed a qualitative cross-sectional study about issues affecting decisions to start ART in this cohort. In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted with 48 participants who started ART after variable time on the trial. RESULTS:

Reducing methylmercury accumulation in the food webs of San Francisco Bay and its local watersheds.

San Francisco Bay (California, USA) and its local watersheds present an interesting case study in estuarine mercury (Hg) contamination. This review focuses on the most promising avenues for attempting to reduce methylmercury (MeHg) contamination in Bay Area aquatic food webs and identifying the scientific information that is most urgently needed to support these efforts. Concern for human exposure to MeHg in the region has led to advisories for consumption of sport fish. Striped bass from the Bay have the highest average Hg concentration measured for this species in USA estuaries, and this deg
