BACKGROUND: The population in Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) has experienced a major demographic transition with increased numbers of older adults (OA). This change brings opportunities in the public health sector to implement health prevention interventions and delay the onset of geriatric syndromes. Micronutrients play an important role in the maintenance of biological function which contributes to longevity. Micronutrient deficiencies (MD) in OA increase the risk for onset of chronic comorbidities and geriatric syndromes.
AIM: To review and summarize the existing data on micronutrient s

Possible causes for a normocytic hyperregeneratory anemia are beside an incomplete treatment of iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency or folic acid deficiency notably a hemolysis. After exclusion of other causes of hemolysis like immune hemolytic anemias, microangiopathic hemolytic anemias and hemoglobinopathies, an enzyme deficiency of erythrocytes should be considered. By far the most common form worldwide is the Glucose-6-phosphate deficiency. In the most frequent variants of this disease hemolysis occurs only during stress, imposed for example by infection, "oxidative" drugs or after ing

Iron is mostly devoted to the hemoglobinization of erythrocytes for oxygen transport. However, emerging evidence points to a broader role for the metal in hematopoiesis, including the formation of the immune system. Iron availability in mammalian cells is controlled by iron-regulatory protein 1 (IRP1) and IRP2. We report that global disruption of both IRP1 and IRP2 in adult mice impairs neutrophil development and differentiation in the bone marrow, yielding immature neutrophils with abnormally high glycolytic and autophagic activity, resulting in neutropenia. IRPs promote neutrophil differenti

Food fortification with iron is effective in combating iron-deficiency anemia. As iron is reactive, it can destroy micronutrients, contribute to poor taste, and discolor the food. Encapsulation could be used to prevent the reaction of iron with food components. The stability of thiamin (vitamin B1) and its effects on organoleptic properties in Ultra Rice were investigated in the presence of encapsulated ferrous fumarate. The preparation of simulated rice grains did not affect the solubility of encapsulated ferrous fumarate in simulated gastric juice. After 20 weeks at 40 degrees C/ approximate

It has been found that yeast cells are sensitive to iron overload only when grown on glucose as a carbon source. Effective concentration of ferrous iron is much higher than that found in natural environments. Effects of ferrous iron are strictly oxygen dependent, what suggest that the formation of hydroxyl radicals in the Fenton reaction is a cause of the toxicity. Respiratory deficiency and pretreatment of cells with antimycin A prevent toxic effects in the late exponential phase of growth, whereas uncouplers and 2mM magnesium salts completely protect even the most vulnerable exponential cell

Inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn's disease (CD), can present with hematochezia, iron deficiency anemia, intestinal obstruction, elevated fecal calprotectin often overlapping with other conditions. We report a 16-year-old adolescent boy with presumed stricturing CD whose anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy failed to respond. Persistent iron deficiency anemia and elevated fecal calprotectin prompted reevaluation imaging, raising concerns for the Meckel diverticulum. Surgical resection resulted in resolution of anemia. This case highlights the importance of reassessing a diagnosis in

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis is characterized by a triad of iron-deficiency anemia, hemoptysis, and radiographic diffuse lung infiltrates. However, the inconsistent initial presentation in children may cause a significant delay in diagnosis. Autoimmune reactivity seems to be the most acceptable theory of pathogenesis. We reported an 8-year-old boy presenting with a cough, fever, and difficulty breathing with a history of iron-deficiency anemia and an abnormal autoimmune response in the last 3 years. Perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies were positive and chest computed tomogr

The nutritional status of 84 elderly ambulant, self-feeding residents in public institutions was evaluated in terms of their food supply and the biochemical constituents in their blood. Calculations were made of the energy, protein, vitamin and iron composition of the food supply in the institution. The amount of nutrients supplied were adequate when compared with the recommended dietary allowances. Deficiency levels in the blood (expressed as a percentage of the population) were found in the following constituents; riboflavin 46%, hemoglobin 44%, plasma carotene 34%, thiamine 19%, leukocyte a

One thousand consecutive cinefluorographic examinations of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus were reviewed to determine the incidence of webs in a population routinely referred for upper gastrointestinal examination. The age, sex, and incidence of iron deficiency anemia in patients with webs were compared with those of the controls, and dysphagia and associated diseases were noted. 5.5% of the patients had one or more webs; these patients had a similar sex distribution to the control group but were generally older. Both groups had the same incidence of iron deficiency anemia. None of the

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to understand the experience of iron deficiency anaemia requiring oral iron in pregnancy and the factors affecting compliance with oral iron supplementation. Participants' understanding regarding the possible consequences of anaemia in pregnancy was also explored. Feedback on a proposed randomised controlled trial of daily versus alternate day oral iron in pregnancy was sought.
MATERIALS & METHODS: Following ethical approval, fourteen semi-structured one-to-one interviews were carried out using an interview tool with open-ended questions. Recruitm

Iron fortification compounds are of special interest to treat iron deficiency anemia, however, the dose-response effects of these fortificants on liver and renal functions have not been extensively reported in human subjects. The present study determines the effects of prebiotics and iron fortificants on liver function tests (LFTs) and renal function tests (RFTs) among women of reproductive age (WRA). A double-blind randomized controlled trial was performed for the duration of 90 days. A total of 75 iron-deficient women were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups (4 treatment groups and 1

BACKGROUND: Since 2015, ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), an intravenous (IV) iron formulation used for treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA), has been associated with an increasing number of reported hypophosphatemia (HPP) cases. Information on HPP clinical manifestations and incidence has not been reviewed.
METHODS: We reviewed HPP-associated adverse events reported to the FDA, case reports, case series, observational databases, clinical trials, meta-analyses, and FDA-approved labels. Our analysis found that FCM-associated HPP is a clinically important adverse drug reaction (ADR). The most commo

OBJECTIVES: We test the hypothesis that the condition(s) leading to the development of cribra orbitalia at Con Co Ngua, an early seventh millennium sedentary foraging community in Vietnam, effectively reduced the resilience of the population to subsequent health/disease impacts. An assessment of both the implications and potential etiology of cribra orbitalia in this specific population is carried out.
METHODS: The effective sample included 141 adults aged ≥15 years (53 females, 71 males, and 17 unknown sex) and 15 pre-adults aged ≤14 years. Cribra orbitalia was identified by way of cortical

Active women or women of reproductive age (15-49 years old) have a high risk of suffering from anaemia. Anaemia is not solely caused by iron deficiency, however, the approaches to improve iron status in both cases are greatly related. Improving the iron status of active women can be done by dietary intervention with functional food. This review aims to provide insights about the functional food role to increase iron absorption in active women and the potency of pulse probiotic superfood development in dry matrices. Results showed that the beneficial effect of iron status is significantly impro

The mechanism of action of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is becoming increasingly clearer as a result of studies that have defined its structure and pleiotropic effects. Furthermore, data are emerging on the effects exerted on this hormone by iron administration. Ten main iron formulations are recognized (with clear differences in composition and possible reactions of intolerance and anaphylaxis), which are indicated for iron deficiency anemia, including nephropathic subjects, as suggested by medical guidelines. With some types of iron formulation (especially iron carboxymaltose) a parti
