Cisplatin (CP)-induced nephrotoxicity is widely accepted as a model for acute kidney injury (AKI). Although cisplatin-induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in rodent has been reported, the role of phosphate in the cisplatin-induced CKD progression is not described. Genetic conditions affecting the skin and kidney are clinically and genetically heterogeneous, and target molecular components present in both organs. The molecular pathology involves defects of cell-matrix adhesion, metabolic or signaling pathways, as well as tumor suppressor genes. This article gives a clinically oriented overview of this group of disorders, highlighting entities which have been recently described, as well as the progress made in understanding well-known entities. The genetic bases as well as molecular cell biological mechanisms are described, with therapeutic applications.

There is a paucity of data on pregnancy outcome in women living with a single kidney from all causes. Current thinking is extrapolated from living kidney donors, a group biased by strict selection criteria. We present a cohort of 26 women with a solitary functioning kidney; 11 women had an acquired single kidney of whom only 1 was a living donor and 15 had a congenital single kidney. BACKGROUND: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) complicates the management of at least 25% of patients with severe burns and is associated with long term complications. Most research focuses on the patients with more severe burns, and whether the same factors are associated with the development of AKI in patients with burns between 10 and 19% total body surface area (TBSA) is unknown.
