Early placement of ventilation tubes in cleft lip and palate patients: does palatal closure affect tube occlusion and short-term outcome?

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion is almost universal in children with cleft palate due to the poor function of the Eustachian tube. Our study investigates the functioning of ventilation tubes placed at the time of primary cleft surgery (4 months of age) and at the time of secondary surgery (12 months of age). We compared two different surgical protocols: (Leg A) closure of the lip and soft palate at the age of 3-4 months (primary surgery) and closure of the hard palate at the age of 12 months (secondary surgery), and (Leg C) closure of the lip at the age of 3-4 months (primary surgery) a…

Craniofacial and anthropometric phenotype in ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defects-cleft lip/palate syndrome (Hay-Wells syndrome) in a cohort of 17 patients.

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate (AEC) syndrome and Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome are well-characterized clinical entities caused by mutations in the TP63 gene. While AEC and Rapp-Hodgkin had been thought to be clinically distinct entities, the elucidation of their molecular etiology confirmed that they are a clinical continuum as opposed to distinct disorders. We have evaluated 17 patients with AEC syndrome using a systematic clinical approach. In our study, we have identified new features and others that were thought to occur only rarely. These include short stature and poor wei…

Diencephalic neuronal hamartoma associated with congenital obstructive hydrocephalus, anophthalmia, cleft lip and palate and severe mental retardation: a possible new syndrome.

A male infant was born with severe hydrocephalus, bilateral cleft lip/palate, left anophthalmos and right microphthalmos, and an equino-varus foot deformity. Imaging studies showed enlarged lateral ventricles, apparent absence of the corpus callosum and a midline density in the third ventricular region. He had a normal male karyotype. He was severely mentally retarded and died suddenly at 7 years of age. Neuropathological examination of the brain revealed enlarged and polygyric cerebral hemispheres, due to congenital obstructive hydrocephalus, and secondary thinning of the corpus callosum. An …

Impact of neurodevelopmental disorders on surgical outcomes in patients with cleft lip and palate: A retrospective cohort study from the U.S. collaborative network.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) undergo multiple surgical interventions from infancy through adulthood. Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) occur more frequently in patients with CL/P than in the general population. We compared postoperative medical events, complications, and revision surgery rates between patients with CL/P with and without NDD. We hypothesized that patients with NDD would experience higher rates of postoperative adverse events. METHODS: Data were obtained from the United States Collaborative Network within TriNetX. Patients diagnosed with cleft lip (…

Global, regional, and national burdens of lip and oral cavity cancer in the adolescents and young adults from 1990 to 2021 and its predictions.

Oral cancer is among the most common malignant tumors of the head and neck. However, a comprehensive assessment of the burden of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15 to 39 is still lacking. Using age- and sex-stratified data across global, regional, and national levels from 1990 to 2021, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive estimate of the burden of LOC in the AYAs population and analyzed global data on the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) linked to AYAs LOC from 1990 to 2021. Age-standardized rate and estimated …

A Rare Case of Nasopalatine Duct Cyst Diagnosed 7 Years After Secondary Bone Grafting in a Patient With Cleft Lip and Palate.

Secondary autogenous particulate cancellous bone and marrow grafting (SBG) is a reliable and established technique for patients with alveolar cleft. Some reports have described complications after SBG, but cyst formation in alveolar bone where SBG has been performed appears to be extremely rare. Herein, we report a rare case of a cyst forming at a grafted site 5 years after SBG. A 15-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with a chief complaint of swelling in the right maxilla. The patient had a history of multiple surgeries for cleft lip and palate. Panoramic radiography and computed tomogr…
