Effects of conventional anchorage on premolar root development during treatment with a pendulum appliance.

OBJECTIVE: By metrically analyzing orthopantomograms, we aimed in this study to retrospectively investigate whether maxillary premolars used as anchoring teeth during molar distalization with pendulum appliances would reveal inhibited root development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The upper molars were distalized with a modified pendulum appliance (Pendulum K) in 36 adolescents (14 males, 22 females, mean age 12.3 years). Mean treatment period was 19.5 weeks. Orthopantomograms of each patient were taken at the start (time point T1) and after completion of molar distalization (time point T2). The enl

Agenesis of the gallbladder found at laparoscopy in an adult patient with cardiac congenital malformation.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is an endemic disease in countries with tropical climates such as South America, Southern Asia, and Southeast Asia. There has been an increase in leptospirosis incidence in Malaysia from 1.45 to 25.94 cases per 100,000 population between 2005 and 2014. With increasing incidence in Selangor, Malaysia, and frequent climate change dynamics, a study on the disease hotspot areas and their association with the hydroclimatic factors could enhance disease surveillance and public health interventions. METHODS: This ecological cross-sectional study utilised a geographic inform

A harmonisation framework for multi-centre preclinical PET imaging across a national research infrastructure.

Quantitative preclinical positron emission tomography (PET)
imaging plays an important role in translational research, yet variability
across scanners, sites, and analysis workflows remains a major barrier
to robust multi-centre studies. In this work, we developed and evaluated
a harmonisation framework across a national network of preclinical PET
facilities.

Approach. Six identical NEMA NU~4-2008 image quality phantoms were
manufactured and distributed to six sites, where they were imaged using
local acquisition and reconstruction protocols across

Conformal reliability assessment of PPG-based ICU arrhythmia classification under class imbalance and patient heterogeneity.

Objective.Deep learning models for photoplethysmography (PPG)-based arrhythmia detection in intensive care are often evaluated by average accuracy, while conformal prediction (CP) is used to add marginal coverage guarantees. We ask whether aggregate accuracy and marginal conformal coverage are sufficient evidence of clinical reliability under intensive care unit (ICU) class imbalance and patient heterogeneity.Approach.Using the MIMIC-III-Ext-PPG benchmark with 826 critically ill patients and over 1.1 million 30 s PPG segments, we conduct a conformal reliability audit of PPG-only arrhythmia cla

A web-based deep learning cascade for automated detection and quantification of marginal bone loss.

BACKGROUND: Marginal Bone Loss (MBL) around dental implants is a key indicator of peri-implantitis. Existing literature evaluates MBL at a single time point, neglecting baseline comparisons and the temporal nature of disease progression. Conventional radiographic assessments remain limited by subjectivity in angulation and magnification. This study aimed to develop and validate a cascade of six Deep Learning (DL) models for automated detection and quantification of MBL on sequential Periapical (PA) radiographs. It further assessed the system’s accuracy against dental specialists and deployed i

Kinematic and kinetic differences between lead and rear straight punches in elite boxers: bilateral asymmetry and training implications.

BACKGROUND: In boxing, differences in technical efficacy are commonly observed between lead-hand and rear-hand straight punches, as well as in limb asymmetry. However, systematic analyses of the kinematic and kinetic characteristics of lead- and rear-hand straight punches remain limited. In this study, we elucidated differences in kinematic and kinetic performance between lead-hand (non-dominant) and rear-hand (dominant) straight punches in boxers, characterized limb asymmetry, and provide evidence-based guidance for the scientific training of straight punch techniques. METHODS: Seventeen mal

Deep Model Families for EEG-Based Multi-Class Dementia Classification.

Deep learning (DL) has shown considerable promise for EEG-based dementia assessment; however, rigorous cross-family comparisons under leakage-free and clinically meaningful evaluation protocols remain limited. To address this gap, we benchmarked twelve DL architectures from four major families - recurrent neural networks (RNNs), temporal convolutional networks (TCNs), Transformers, and self-supervised learning (SSL) - for the multi-class differentiation of Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and healthy controls (HC). The analysis was conducted on a clinically acquired EEG

Mechanism-informed evaluation of particle formation in high-concentration monoclonal antibodies during fill-finish: Impact of pump materials, surface interactions, and system architecture.

Particle formation during fill-finish operations poses a critical risk to the quality and manufacturability of high-concentration monoclonal antibody drug products. This study systematically evaluates the influence of pump material, clearance tolerance, and flow-path architecture on subvisible and visible particle generation using a model IgG formulation. Controlled simulations compared peristaltic pumping with ceramic and stainless-steel rotary piston pumps under standstill and recirculation conditions, including a configuration incorporating a three-way valve and deliberate metal particulate

Engineering alginate hydrogels loaded with resveratrol as a dual platform for cancer therapy and wound regeneration.

Hydrogels represent a highly adaptable biomaterial platform for a broad range of biomedical uses, largely because they can replicate the extracellular matrix while retaining substantial amounts of aqueous fluid. Among the polymers employed for hydrogel fabrication, naturally derived macromolecules are particularly appealing thanks to their favorable biocompatibility and biodegradation profiles. Alginate, in particular, has drawn considerable attention as a matrix-forming polymer owing to its wide natural availability, low cost, and the relative ease with which it can be crosslinked into three-

Data for Machine Learning Models: Clinical Experience Determines Interrater Reliability in Waveform Anomaly Detection.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency intracranial pressure (ICP) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) waveforms are increasingly utilized for advanced physiological monitoring and as inputs for machine learning (ML) models. The accuracy of derived parameters relies on input data quality, and anomaly contaminated signals may impair model performance. Reliable anomaly annotation is therefore essential. Despite progress in automated labeling, human annotations remain the "ground truth" for ML training approaches. Human labeling is subjective and may vary depending on the signal type and the annotator's experi
