Self-concept and depressive symptoms three years after stroke: An evaluation of predictive value, the role of subdomains and individual importance.

Depressive symptoms (DS) after stroke are associated with marked negative consequences for rehabilitation. Identifying determinants of DS is needed to enable prediction and develop psychological interventions. A promising candidate may be self-concept and changes thereof, so-called self-discrepancy. Consulting recent self-concept models, we investigated the role of self-concept subdomains and their individual importance. Within a prospective longitudinal study, 120 stroke survivors were interviewed via telephone 3 years post-ictus to assess present and past self-concept, self-discrepancy, self

Characterizing motoric cognitive risk syndrome beyond traditional criteria.

Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome is defined by slow gait speed and cognitive complaints. This study aimed to identify objective gait, cognitive, and psychosocial markers that characterize MCR beyond its traditional criteria. 104 older adults were classified into four groups: healthy aging (n = 50), slow gait speed only (n = 31), cognitive complaints only (n = 13), and MCR (n = 10). Participants completed single- and dual-task gait assessments while wearing wearable gait sensors. The dual-task paradigm involved responding to auditory stimuli while walking. Cognitive performance was measure

Preferences and willingness to pay for palliative care among parents of children with cancer: a Discrete Choice Experiment.

PURPOSE: To quantify the preference of parents of children with cancer for palliative care (PC) in China to provide references for the development of service programs. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to explore preferences for PC among parents of children with cancer. The conditional logit and mixed logit models were employed to estimate the parents' preferences. Furthermore, we calculated the willingness to pay (WTP) and simulated how variations in attribute levels influenced the probability of parental service acceptance. Meanwhile, preference heterogeneity among parent

Dynapenia is associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms among older adults.

BACKGROUND: Depression affects the global burden of disability among older adults. Although dynapenia is related to disability and potential psychological health outcomes, its association with depressive symptoms remains uncertain. Accordingly, the objective of the current study was to investigate this association in older Taiwanese adults, applying the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) classification of dynapenia. METHODS: Our research utilized a cross-sectional design implemented from September 2020 to December 2021, enrolling older adults aged over 65 years through National Ta

An intersectional examination of the relationship between racial/ethnic discrimination and psychotic-like experiences: the role of other psychiatric symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic experiences of discrimination (EODs) are associated with numerous psychiatric symptoms, including outcomes along the psychosis spectrum; however, less is known about mechanisms by which EODs confer risk for psychotic-like experiences (PLEs; common subthreshold psychotic symptoms). Furthermore, work on gendered racism asserts that the intersection of race and gender impacts the nature of EODs experienced and, in turn, may impact the relationship between EODs and PLEs. AIMS: To utilize an intersectional lens (race and gender) to examine whether psychological correl

The association of demographic, psychological, social and activity factors with foot health in people with plantar heel pain.

BACKGROUND: Plantar Heel Pain (PHP) can be a debilitating musculoskeletal condition from which only 50% recover within a year due to poor understanding of the mechanisms explaining severity and predicting outcomes specific to PHP. OBJECTIVE: To explore associations between biopsychosocial variables and the severity of people with PHP. Secondly, to determine what combination of self-reported factors distinguishes people with PHP from other foot pain (OFP). METHODS: We collected data from 235 participants, including 135 (%57) PHP (age 44 ± 12 years, 66% female) and 99 OFP (%43) (age 38 ± 11 ye

Alcohol use as a predictor of intimate partner violence in emerging adulthood: A dyadic daily diary investigation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Numerous studies have demonstrated that alcohol preceded and increased the odds of intimate partner violence (IPV). These prior studies were restricted to one dyad member despite theory suggesting that acute alcohol use by both partners should increase the risk for IPV to a greater degree than when only one partner drinks. We hypothesized that alcohol use by both dyad members, relative to one or no dyad members, would proximally precede and increase the odds of IPV perpetration and victimization. DESIGN: A 60-day daily diary design was used, where both dyad members of dat

Maternal perceived safety and parenting practices with young children: a cross-sectional analysis from 15 low-income and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Social environments can influence parents' caregiving capacities and the quality of nurturing care provided to children. These links, in turn, can shape children's developmental outcomes over the life course. We aimed to examine the relationship between maternal perceived safety at home and in the neighbourhood and maternal parenting practices in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHOD: We combined cross-sectional data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys in 15 LMICs (2018-2019). Mothers of children aged 36-59 months were included in the sample. We assessed

Multiomics Analysis Reveals Gut Virome-Bacteria-Metabolite Interactions and Their Associations with Symptoms in Patients with IBS-D.

The gut microbiota is involved in the pathogenesis of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), but few studies have focused on the role of the gut virome in IBS-D. We aimed to explore the characteristics of the gut virome in patients with IBS-D, its interactions with bacteria and metabolites, and the associations between gut multiomics profiles and symptoms. This study enrolled twelve patients with IBS-D and eight healthy controls (HCs). The stool samples were subjected to metavirome sequencing, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and untargeted metabolomic analysis. The participants compl

Psychological therapies for depression and cardiovascular risk: evidence from national healthcare records in England.

AIMS: People with depression are up to 72% more at risk to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD) in their lifetime. Evidence-based psychotherapies are first-line interventions for the treatment of depression and are delivered nationally in England through the National Health Service via the Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) primary care programme. It is currently unknown whether positive therapy outcomes may be associated with cardiovascular risk reduction. This study aimed to examine the association between psychotherapy outcomes for depression and incident CVD. METHODS AND RES
