Removal of metastatic lung tumor was performed for 27 patients in a period from January, 1972 to December, 1981. They included 22 carcinomas and 5 sarcomas. Diagnosis as having lung metastasis was made after removal of the primary tumor in 18 patients and at the time of the first detection of the primary tumor in 4 patients. The lateral position test (LPT) accurately measures differential ventilation of the lungs when the mediastinum is mobile. The quantitative perfusion lung scan (PLS) also correlates well with differential ventilation but is not dependent on mediastinal movement. The results of microscopic study of the material obtained from 71 cases of clinically-occult cancer of the breast are reported. Generally, metastases into axillary lymph nodes are primary clinical manifestations. A histological description of dysplasia and preinvasive cancer of the breast is presented. Metastatic spreading in regional lymph nodes unaccompanied by microscopically-detectable invasive tumor growth is discussed.

The authors present a homogeneous series of 133 patients with squamous carcinomas of the base of the tongue, treated mostly by external radiotherapy. A patient with a small cell, undifferentiated carcinoma of the larynx is described. The tumor appeared to arise in close association with subglottic minor salivary glands. Ultrastructural study of the tumor cells showed neurosecretory granules similar to those seen in normal Kulchitsky cells and pulmonary oat cell carcinomas. Bronchogenic oat cell carcinoma and small cell undifferentiated carcinoma of minor salivary gland tissue probably originate from the same cell type. The aggressive behavior of this tumor suggests the need for early systemic treatment including combination chemotherpay.

From 1968 to 1978 more than 500 patients suffering from histologically verified malignant melanoma were seen. Only in 12 cases (appr. 2%) the tumour was situated on the tip of the fingers and toes. In such cases nowadays amputation and exarticulation of the whole extremity is no longer practiced. It is sufficient only to remove the corresponding finger or toe. Additional chemotherapy should supplement surgery.

Scintigraphic pulmonary perfusion imaging in the dog has been described for the clinically normal animal. The usefulness of this technique in the patient with pulmonary dysfunction was assessed by review of 76 consecutive clinical cases completed in a 6-month period. Seven cases of subpulmonary pneumothorax are presented: four due to penetrating injury, two to blunt trauma and one to osteosarcoma metastasis. An experience with 371 mediastinoscopies in lung cancer patients is analysed. The enlargement of intrathoracic lymph nodes revealed roentgenologically or bronchoscopically is considered by the authors to be the basic indication to mediastinoscopy. Among 270 such patients the positive result of mediastinoscopy was noted in 128 (47.3%). Among the remaining 101 patients, in whom none of the methods concerned revealed lymph nodes enlargement, the positive results of mediastinoscopy were noted only in 3 (2.97%).

Thirteen patients with advanced mycosis fungoides received induction therapy with Adriamycin, 60/m2 I.V. repeated at 21-day intervals. Ten patients had extensive skin tumors; all patients had lymph node enlargement with mycosis fungoides involvement in eight; four patients had biopsy-proven visceral involvement.
