BACKGROUND: After a stroke, urinary dysfunction and urinary tract infection are estimated to be approximately 20%. Increased postvoid residual (PVR) is a risk factor for urinary dysfunction and urinary tract infections. These complications can negatively impact recovery weeks after the initial hospitalization. Early identification of risks and patient education are important.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project was initiated for those patients admitted for a diagnosis of stroke on a 55-bed neuroscience unit in an acute care hospital. Patients were scanned after the initial void post stroke. Nur

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetic foot ulcer is recognized as a consequence of peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease amid individuals with diabetes. As is well known, this situation still remains a crucial problem in nursing practice. Available studies describing an algorithm of inter- related nursing interventions concerned with diabetic foot ulcers are limited. Therefore, this integrative review was aimed to present evidence-based practice for overcoming the complications of diabetic foot ulcer as well as preventing lower extremity amputation.
METHODS: This integrative review re

INTRODUCTION: Improved medicines' management could lead to real and sustainable improvements to the care of older adults. The overuse of mental health medicines has featured in many reports, and insufficient patient monitoring has been identified as an important cause of medicine-related harms. Nurse-led monitoring using the structured adverse drug reaction (ADRe) profile identifies and addresses the adverse effects of mental health medicines. Our study investigates clinical impact and what is needed to sustain utilisation in routine practice in care homes.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This process

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: After recent outbreaks of duodenoscope-related infections from multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended implementing 1 or more of 4 enhanced reprocessing measures in addition to updated manual cleaning methods and high-level disinfection (HLD). The implementation of these techniques in endoscopy facilities and provider opinions regarding reprocessing priorities remain unknown.
METHODS: Physicians, nurse managers, nurses, and infection control staff at endoscopy units performing ERCP in the United States were su

Spirometric obstruction is a prevalent problem in older adults and related to life-style risk factors. Symptoms related to chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease (COPD) are also prevalent symptoms with diverse etiologies - not limited to pulmonary obstruction. Older adults may have unrecognized airway obstruction due to functional limitations or symptoms mis-attributed to age/other co-morbidities. Therefore, spirometric obstruction may clinically be over/under diagnosed. Over last few decades, the burden of smoking-related diseases has increased in older adults. Additional evidence regarding ol

To evaluate providers' perspectives regarding the delivery of prenatal care to women with psychosocial risk factors. A random, national sample of 2,095 prenatal care providers (853 obstetricians and gynecologists (Ob/Gyns), 270 family medicine (FM) physicians and 972 midwives) completed a mailed survey. We measured respondents' practice and referral patterns regarding six psychosocial risk factors: adolescence (age ≤19), unstable housing, lack of paternal involvement and social support, late prenatal care (>13 weeks gestation), domestic violence and drug or alcohol use. OBJECTIVES: Hourly neurologic assessments for traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the critical care setting are common practice but prolonged use may actually be harming patients through sleep deprivation. We reviewed practice patterns at our institution in order to gain insight into the role of frequent neurological assessments.
METHODS: A 6-month retrospective review was performed for patients who were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with the diagnosis of TBI. Electronic medical records were reviewed based on billing codes. Variables collected included but were not limited to patient d

Most quantitative studies that survey nurses' attitudes toward euthanasia and/or assisted suicide, also attempt to assess the influence of religion on these attitudes. We wanted to evaluate the operationalisation of religion and world view in these surveys. In the Pubmed database we searched for relevant articles published before August 2008 using combinations of search terms. Twenty-eight relevant articles were found. In five surveys nurses were directly asked whether religious beliefs, religious practices and/or ideological convictions influenced their attitudes, or the respondents were requ

A systematic, random sample of 450 small and mixed-animal practitioners was selected from the client list of a prominent veterinary pharmaceutical and animal health company. A telephone survey was conducted, using a standard questionnaire, to assess whether current veterinary practices concerning prophylaxis and treatment of canine roundworm (Toxocara canis) and hookworm (Ancylostoma spp) infections are adequate to prevent transmission to human beings. Analysis of results focused on 3 questions related to prevention: practitioner's frequency of client education regarding zoonotic potential of

Background Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain among the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and are largely preventable through adherence to evidence-based infection prevention measures. Healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) play a critical role in the effective implementation of these strategies. However, there is no evidence regarding HCWs' KAP on CAUTI prevention in Greek healthcare settings. This study aimed to evaluate HCWs' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CAUTI prevention in a tertiary care hospital i

BACKGROUND: Collaborative interprofessional practice is essential in the critical care arena to promote quality, safety, and positive outcomes for patients. An interprofessional educational activity focusing on early mobilization of intubated intensive care patients was undertaken with senior level nursing students and physical therapy students. Evidence demonstrates that these patients have improved functional outcomes, fewer days requiring mechanical ventilation, fewer days of delirium, and decreased length of stay both within the intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital with early mobilizatio

Diseases caused by viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and zika are mosquito-borne diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti. We performed a cross-sectional study of healthcare personnel and the general population using questionnaires to identify the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices, and risk perception for dengue, chikungunya and zika. A total of 248 questionnaires were applied, 63.3% to healthcare personnel and 36.7% to the general population. Of the healthcare personnel, 53% were men, and in the general population 74% were women. Nahuatl and Spanish were spoken by both, healthcare pe

Rationale and key points A nasogastric tube (NG tube) can be used to aspirate stomach contents or to administer feed, medication or fluid into the stomach. ▶ A blind technique is used to insert the NG tube through the nostril, along the nasopharynx, through the oesophagus and into the stomach. ▶ It is important for nurses to be able to recognise problems that may arise when inserting a NG tube blindly, and to know what actions to take if it is suspected that the distal tip of the NG tube is not sitting in the stomach, or they are unable to identify its location. ▶ Misplacement and subsequent u

BACKGROUND: The CanRisk tool, which operationalises the Breast and Ovarian Analysis of Disease Incidence and Carrier Estimation Algorithm (BOADICEA) is used by Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Breast Oncologists, Surgeons and Family History Nurses for breast cancer risk assessments both nationally and internationally. There are currently no guidelines with respect to the day-to-day clinical application of CanRisk and differing inputs to the model can result in different recommendations for practice.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) is increasingly recognized as a vital strategy for enhancing the quality of care in assisted living facility (ALF) settings. By fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals such as nurses, nurses' aides, social workers, physicians, and administrators, IPE promotes a shared and more robust understanding of resident needs and care goals. This opinion article argues that greater integration of IPE and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) into long-term care training programs can significantly improve communication, reduce errors, and enhance

AIM: Paediatric basic life support (PBLS) training is strongly recommended for the families of children with elevated risks of cardiac arrest, as their initial survival could rely heavily on bystanders. We explored the perspectives of physicians and nurses on PBLS training and identified perceived barriers and facilitators to implementing family training.
METHODS: An exploratory descriptive design was used, based on semi-structured interviews with 15 physicians and 16 registered nurses working in paediatric cardiology clinics in university and regional hospitals across Sweden.
RESULTS: Healt

This protocol presents a standardized, evidence-based nursing approach for ultrasonography-guided nasogastric tube (NGT) placement and verification in adult patients. The method was developed from a scoping review of 29 studies that examined clinical indications, technical procedures, and decision-making strategies for point-of-care ultrasonography (PoCUS) in NGT confirmation. Across the literature, ultrasonography consistently emerged as a safe, rapid, radiation-free tool for real-time visualization of the tube within the esophagus and stomach. While chest radiography remains the conventional

To measure and compare the temporal variations in sub-bandage pressure compression systems in the Andalusian Health System (SAS). Additional objectives included assessing the relationship between pressure and healing, analysing the influence of the healthcare professional applying the bandage, and determining bandage stiffness. This prospective observational and multicentre study included 140 patients with active VLUs in Andalusia. Sub-bandage pressures were measured at three anatomical points in the leg for 96 h, under different positions and activities. The bandage application technique was
