Estimating the impact of nutritional transition and ending hunger on tuberculosis in 12 high-burden countries: a model-based scenario analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a critical determinant of tuberculosis (TB), providing a protective effect at high body mass index (BMI) and incurring an increased risk of TB disease at low BMI. Global nutritional transition and interventions to end hunger could directly affect the TB epidemic in high TB burden countries. METHODS: We constructed dynamic TB transmission models for 12 high TB burden countries with low HIV prevalence. We explicitly accounted for the effects of BMI on TB disease progression and treatment outcomes using a meta-analysis of longitudinal cohort studies, incorporating the ef

Iodine Status and Its Influencing Factors in Hospitalized and Healthy Preschool-Age Children.

Iodine is a trace element necessary for synthesizing thyroid hormones. It is especially crucial for the neurodevelopment and intellectual development of children. Preschool-age children admitted to the hospital tend to have more fragile physical and mental health, but few studies demonstrate their iodine status. Our study aimed to investigate the iodine status of hospitalized and healthy preschool-age children and to explore the factors influencing them. From January to December 2021, 426 children aged 3-6 years were admitted to the respiratory department for pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, or br

The Role of Nutrition in the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Autoimmune Bullous Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are a group of conditions marked by the formation of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs in all age groups, slightly more often affecting women. Several factors may be linked to the development of AIBDs, with nutrition being one of them. The literature mentions various food products and food ingredients acting as disease modifiers. Given the complex relationship between bullous diseases and nutrition, the current literature on AIBDs has been reviewed, with an emphasis on the influence of dietary modifications, various diets, and

Interaction of pre- and postnatal nutrition on expression of leptin receptor variants and transporter molecules, leptin transport, and functional response to leptin in heifers†.

Perinatal nutrition modulates the hypothalamic neurocircuitries controlling GnRH release, thus programming pubertal maturation in female mammals. Objectives of experiments reported here were to test the hypotheses that prenatal nutrition during mid- to late gestation interacts with postnatal nutrition during the juvenile period in heifer offspring to alter expression of leptin receptor (LepR) variants (ObRa, ObRb, ObRc, ObRt), and lipoprotein transporter molecules (LRP1 and 2) in the choroid plexus, leptin transport across the blood-brain barrier, and hypothalamic-hypophyseal responsiveness to

Effect of the Energy Intake on the Iron Status of Resistance Exercises Performed in Rats.

In many cases, athletes compensate for nutrient deficiencies due to a reduced dietary intake by taking supplements or other means. However, in what ways nutrients are utilized by the body when it is deficient in energy and yet receives adequate amounts of the required nutrients are unclear. We therefore examined the effect of the balance between available energy and iron intake on the iron nutritional status of athletes. The experiment was conducted in two parts. Four-week-old male rats were divided into two groups based on energy and iron sufficiency: Experiment 1 was energy-sufficient and ir…

The Gluten-Free Diet for Celiac Disease: Critical Insights to Better Understand Clinical Outcomes.

The gluten-free diet (GFD) remains a complex paradigm in managing celiac disease (CeD) in children and adults, and there are many reasons why GFD adherence should be strict to improve outcomes. However, this is a challenging task for patients, since they need to have access to quality healthcare resources that facilitate optimal GFD adherence. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the GFD, tackling coexisting nutritional deficiencies, and dealing with complex situations, such as seronegative CeD or non-responsive CeD, all require the involvement of a multidisciplinary team. The short-

Application of Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria in patients with liver cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria were published to build a global consensus on nutritional diagnosis. Reduced muscle mass is a phenotypic criterion with strong evidence to support its inclusion in the GLIM consensus criteria. However, there is no consensus regarding how to accurately measure and define reduced muscle mass in clinical settings. This study aimed to investigate the optimal reference values of skeletal muscle mass index for diagnosing sarcopenia and GLIM-defined malnutrition, as well as the prevalence of GLIM-defined malnutrition in hosp

Deconstructing Disease-Related Malnutrition: A New Assessment Framework for Clinical Practice.

Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is a key cause of functional impairment and poor health outcomes in people with chronic kidney disease. While PEW can be mitigated with nutrition therapy, it is a complex myriad of disorders with numerous interacting etiologies and corresponding presentations, which make it difficult to diagnose and manage in practice. A variety of scoring rubrics have been developed to facilitate malnutrition assessment. Although these tools have greatly benefited the recognition and treatment of PEW, the typical format of grading specified PEW indicators has the potential to over
