The virulence of Salmonella typhimurium strains for day-old chickens was examined. The mortality following oral inoculation varied from 0 to 100 per cent. Some breeds were more susceptible than others. There was no correlation between oral and parenteral virulence. Pathogenesis studies associated with one of the most virulent strains suggested that, after invasion, organisms multiplied in the liver and spleen and spread to other organs producing a systemic infection. The clinical, angiographic, and electrophysiological features of seven patients with transient visual loss and low-pressure retinopathy are presented. Six of the patients also had symptoms of cerebral ischaemia. The commonest provoking feature was bright light. Angiography showed multiple extracranial occlusions involving both internal and external carotid arteries in addition to occlusion or stenosis on the contralateral side. Haematological investigation was conducted on 20 cases of bovine trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma congolense and T. vivax in imported Holstein-Friesian cattle using standard techniques. Healthy camels were experimentally infected with Trypanosoma evansi and then treated with isometamidium chloride (samorin) at single intravenous doses of 0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are both supraventricular arrhythmias, but their mechanisms are … VT rather than de novo as another primary arrhythmia. PSVT occurred significantly earlier during an observation period without treatment in patients in whom AF developed (p = 0.03). The occurrence of AF was not related to age, number of years of PSVT, heart rate during tachycardia or coexistent heart disease.

Clinical features of posterior scleritis were noted in 12 eyes of nine patients followed up for one to seven years. The signs of this clinical entity varied from transitory choroidal folds in the fundus to extensive scleral and choroidal edema with associated edema of Tenon's space and of the optic nerve sheath. These were detected only by ultrasonography. Histopathologic examination of one eye disclosed granulomatous inflammatory reaction in the involved scleral and choroidal areas. Local and systemic treatment with corticosteroids seemed not to affect the clinical course or outcome.

Two adult cases of incidental adrenal focal cytomegaly are presented. Neither of the patients involved had congenital malformations or symptoms attributable to adrenocortical dysfunction. In both, the histologic pattern was a cluster of giant cells resembling adrenal cytomegaly of the fetus or neonate. Similar to that in pediatric adrenal cytomegaly, the ultrastructure of these cells in adults suggests both cellular hyperactivity and exhaustion.

Seventeen patients with Reiter's disease who were included in an earlier prospective study, were reviewed 21 years after their initial episode. The structure of the interface between epidermis and dermis was examined in normal skin and in hypertrophic scars using the scanning electron microscope. The hypertrophic scar was found to show a completely different structure of fibrous tissue (collagen) at this surface when compared to normal skin. Side effects involving agitation, e.g., sleepwalking, anger, and panic, were observed in 10 insomniac patients treated with temazepam or triazolam but not other benzodiazepines. Each patient described these side effects as uncharacteristic. Milder agitation was observed in 2 cases. In 4 cases, these effects were doubted by the prescribing physician. This type of side effect has been only slowly recognized for other benzodiazepines and has not been much reported for these newer agents. Agitation observed during treatment with these agents may be related to their short elimination half-lives.
