Prevention of musicians' hand problems.

A significant proportion of musicians suffer musculoskeletal problems as a result of playing their instruments. The author describes the British Performing Arts Medicine Trust founded by Dr. Ian James 12 years ago to address these problems in Great Britain. The author, a rheumatologist consultant since its inception, reviews over a thousand cases seen at these clinics. Almost half of these patients had no obvious structural abnormality sustaining symptoms through poor posture, bad practice techniques, unfitness and overuse. Lack of full rehabilitation after injury was the most common cause of

Permeation of 70% isopropyl alcohol through surgical gloves: comparison of the standard methods ASTM F739 and EN 374.

Standard test methods ASTM F739 and EN 374 were compared by assessing the permeation of 70% isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) through seven brands of surgical gloves. The two standards differ in the flow rates of the collection medium and in the chemical permeation rate at which the breakthrough time (BTT) is detected, the EN detection level being 10 times higher than the permeation rate used by ASTM. In a departure from the EN standard method, a 4 h testing time was used instead of 8 h. All of the tested gloves were from the same manufacturer and were made from either natural rubber (NR) (six br

Case series: use of induced sputum in the evaluation of occupational lung diseases.

The authors recently reported that analysis of induced sputum may reveal the status of hazardous dust exposure (e.g., silica, hard metals) as effectively as does bronchoalveolar lavage. In the current study, the authors describe how induced sputum can assist in the evaluation and diagnosis of suspected occupational lung diseases. The 3 patients who underwent induced sputum testing included a miner with silicosis, a dental technician with berylliosis, and a teacher who suffered from undefined interstitial fibrosis and in whom induced sputum analysis revealed the presence of a high burden of cal

Feasibility of assessing dermal exposure to PAHs of workers on gaswork sites--the SOLEX study.

Population exposure to pollutants in soil is an important public health concern. Difficult to measure, it is usually estimated using multimedia models. Modeling data predict that the skin surface is a predominant exposure route in roughly 15% of the US Superfund sites. Nonetheless, no study has confirmed these predictions. The SOLEX study was an opportunity to study the feasibility of estimating the cutaneous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: all 16 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency list) load of workers at three former manufactured gas sites, one of those being under

[Job safety: where there is high tension at the work place: MOBBING].

In this article appears the particular phenomenon called MOBBING which begins to came out even in our job places, after years long researches and foreign studies. This syndrome, besides stress and burn-out, it's one of the working risk factors of organizational-psychological kind. The word Mobbing comes from the ethological vocabulary and it means the attack of some part of a crowd against the most weak member. It can be interesting to sketch some not-minority problems that are connected with job healthiness doing confusion as it would only be individuals problems.

Specific immunotherapy with a standardized latex extract versus placebo in allergic healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergy to natural rubber latex proteins has increased over recent years among healthcare professionals but also in children undergoing multiple operations. Exposure to the antigen mainly occurs through the respiratory mucosa and the percutaneous route. Clinical manifestations range from urticaria to angioedema, rhinoconjunctivitis, bronchial asthma, or anaphylactic shock. Preventive measures have been proposed to reduce the risk of sensitization by using only powder-free or synthetic gloves and latex-free material in operating units, but this is not always possib

Alison Bell Memorial Award. Latex sensitivity and allergy: fact and fiction.

Health care workers (HCW) have a higher incidence of latex sensitivity than car maintenance workers! The wearing of latex gloves over several years increases the risk of developing latex allergy! All glove related skin reactions are due to latex! People with spina bifida have a high incidence of latex sensitivity! There is a relationship between allergies to natural latex rubber and avocados, chestnuts and bananas! We should all stop using latex products! Powdered gloves are as safe as unpowdered ones, as long as they are rinsed well!

Application of the concise exposure index (OCRA) to tasks involving repetitive movements of the upper limbs in a variety of manufacturing industries: preliminary validations.

A summary of eight investigations is presented, which were carried out using standardized methods, for the purpose of quantifying exposure to tasks involving repetitive movements of the upper limbs, as well as quantifying the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) of the upper limbs in groups of exposed workers. A total of 462 exposed workers were examined, and the study also took into account the data pertaining to a matched reference group comprising 749 workers not exposed to any specific occupational risk. Regarding the quantification of exposure to increased risk, us

Factors influencing vocational outcomes following stroke in Taiwan: a medical centre-based study.

This study was aimed at identifying the factors relating to return to work for stroke patients of working age in Taiwan, adjusting for confounding factors. A retrospective cohort study was used to test the association between patients' characteristics, such as medical condition at admission and sociodemographic factors, and the degree of return to work after stroke. Two hundred and forty-eight consecutive stroke survivors discharged from the National Taiwan University Hospital participated in the follow-up survey. Variables considered likely to influence return to work were collected from the

Hepatitis B and the theatre nurse.

On 1st July 1995, an important change was made in DOH policy which affects all staff employed in the operating theatre. It was from this date that staff were required to declare their hepatitis B status. As workers who undertake exposure prone procedures (EPP workers), theatre staff are required to be immunised against this disease and to have their vaccination dates and immunity recorded by their employer's Occupational Health Department. Job applicants will not be offered a post unless they can provide proof of immunisation. This important change has been in force for medical EPP workers sin…

Tuberculosis at the end of the twentieth century.

Tuberculosis has once again emerged as a significant public health problem in Western countries. Much of the rise has been fueled by the growing numbers of persons infected with HIV. Co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV has been shown to result in high rates of active tuberculosis, and possibly in acceleration of progression to AIDS. Primary tuberculosis occurs at high rates among dually infected persons, further emphasizing the need for effective isolation of infectious cases. Recent preliminary studies have demonstrated that the survival of persons with multidrug-resistant tu

The community work project: an occupational therapy programme.

The Community Work Project is a work adjustment programme, part of a range of prevocational services offered in the occupational therapy department of the Royal Ottawa Hospital, in Ottawa, Ontario. The special feature of this work adjustment programme is the use of an integrated work environment. Compared to institutionally-based programmes, this work adjustment programme consists of clients undergoing treatment alongside regular competitive employees in a real work setting. Another important feature of this programme is its open length of stay. The Community Work Project is described, with in

Dietetics at work in the workplace: academia and industry cooperate in a blood pressure program.

Here is one approach to the challenge of preparing dietetic students for a rapidly changing health care system. Hypertension screening and control are the focus of a cooperative project conducted at the Saginaw-Detroit plants of General Motors Corporation by students of the Medical Dietetics Program at Wayne State University, Detroit. The project reflects implementation, over a 3-year period, of the General Motors Blood Pressure Program. A model is presented for involving students in a health-oriented program at a work site. Effectiveness of student follow-up and counseling is demonstrated in

Validity of selection criteria for a coordinated undergraduate program.

Academic records and selection interview results of 46 graduates of the University of Minnesota coordinated undergraduate program (CUP) in dietetics were examined to determine relationships between selection criteria and subsequent performance in the program and on the registration examination for dietitians. Data collected included (a) entering science, communication, and overall grade point averages (GPAs), (b) junior and senior year grades in professional didactic and clinical courses, (c) registration examination scores, and (d) interview scores. Entering GPAs were significantly related to
