[Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis and hereditary anomalies lf hepatocellular metabolism of bile acids].

Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), also known as Byler disease, is an inherited cholestasis of hepatocellular origin which is characterized by cholestasis presenting often in the neonatal period leading to death due to liver failure at ages ranging from infancy to adolescence. The pattern of appearance of affected children within families is consistent with autosomal recessive inheritance. The etiology is poorly understood but several studies have recently provided support for an heterogeneity with at least three subcategories among the spectrum of PFIC. The first subtype is

Unusual Presentation of Hemoperitoneum Due to Spontaneous Rupture of Surface Vein Overlying Leiomyoma: A Case Report.

Fibroids are the most common pelvic tumors in women; serious complications are very rare but can be life threatening also. This case report highlights the atypical presentation of spontaneous hemorrhage and gangrene from a uterine myoma that clinicians should consider as a differentials diagnosis of haemoperitonium. It adds to the existing literature in discussing the investigations and management of these rare fibroid complications. We present a case of an atypical presentation of spontaneous hemorrhage from a uterine fibroid with gangrene with no precipitating factors. A 36-year-old lady who

Data gaps in prevalence rates of mental health conditions around the world: a retrospective analysis of nationally representative data.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions contribute substantially to the global burden of disease, affecting quality of life and leading to increased health-care expenses and mortality. Accurate data on the prevalence and correlates of these disorders are crucial for policy making, advocacy, and improving population health, but there are notable gaps in the available data on the magnitude of mental health difficulties around the world. This study aims to identify and quantify the data gaps on mental disorders across the lifespan in the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (G

VDAC1-Based Peptides as Potential Modulators of VDAC1 Interactions with Its Partners and as a Therapeutic for Cancer, NASH, and Diabetes.

This review presents current knowledge related to the voltage-dependent anion channel-1 (VDAC1) as a multi-functional mitochondrial protein that acts in regulating both cell life and death. The location of VDAC1 at the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) allows control of metabolic cross-talk between the mitochondria and the rest of the cell, and also enables its interaction with proteins that are involved in metabolic, cell death, and survival pathways. VDAC1's interactions with over 150 proteins can mediate and regulate the integration of mitochondrial functions with cellular activities. To t

Characterising the lipid profile of paediatric patients with anomalous aortic origins of a coronary artery.

BACKGROUND: Lipid levels in paediatric patients with anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) have not previously been explored. Patients with CHD have an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease later in life compared to the general population. We aim to characterise the lipid profiles in paediatric patients with AAOCA and explore its relation to diagnosis, race/ethnicity, and exercise. METHODS: Single institution retrospective cohort of 180 AAOCA paediatric patients (median age 13.7 years interquartile range 9.7-15.6, 66% male). Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, trigl

Replication of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) in Primary Human-Derived Monocytes and Macrophages In Vitro.

HEV is the most causative agent of acute viral hepatitis globally. HEV causes acute, chronic, and extrahepatic manifestations. Chronic HEV infection develops in immunocompromised patients such as organ transplant patients, HIV-infected patients, and leukemic patients. The source of chronic HEV infection is not known. Also, the source of extrahepatic manifestations associated with HEV infection is still unclear. Hepatotropic viruses such as HCV and HBV replicate in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and these cells become a source of chronic reactivation of the infections in allograft o

Does selective migration alter socioeconomic inequalities in mortality in Wales?: a record-linked total population e-cohort study.

Recent studies found evidence of health selective migration whereby healthy people move to less deprived areas and less healthy people move to or stay in more deprived areas. There is no consensus, however, on whether this influences health inequalities. Measures of socio-economic inequalities in mortality and life expectancy are widely used by government and health services to track changes over time but do not consider the effect of migration. This study aims to investigate whether and to what extent migration altered the observed socioeconomic gradient in mortality. Data for the population

Cohort profile: the Healthy Life in an Urban Setting (HELIUS) study in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

PURPOSE: Ethnic minority groups usually have a more unfavourable disease risk profile than the host population. In Europe, ethnic inequalities in health have been observed in relatively small studies, with limited possibilities to explore underlying causes. The aim of the Healthy Life in an Urban Setting (HELIUS) study is to investigate the causes of (the unequal burden of) diseases across ethnic groups, focusing on three disease categories: cardiovascular diseases, mental health and infectious diseases. PARTICIPANTS: The HELIUS study is a prospective cohort study among six large ethnic group

In Vivo Detection of Perinatal Brain Metabolite Changes in a Rabbit Model of Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR).

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a risk factor for abnormal neurodevelopment. We studied a rabbit model of IUGR by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS), to assess in vivo brain structural and metabolic consequences, and identify potential metabolic biomarkers for clinical translation. METHODS: IUGR was induced in 3 pregnant rabbits at gestational day 25, by 40-50% uteroplacental vessel ligation in one horn; the contralateral horn was used as control. Fetuses were delivered at day 30 and weighted. A total of 6 controls and 5 IUGR pups underwent T2-w MRI

Brachial artery ligation with total graft excision is a safe and effective approach to prosthetic arteriovenous graft infections.

OBJECTIVE: While autogenous arteriovenous access is preferred, prosthetic arteriovenous grafts (AVG) are still required in a large number of patients. Infection of AVGs occurs frequently and may cause life-threatening bleeding or sepsis. Multiple treatment strategies have been advocated (ranging from graft preservation to excision with complex concomitant reconstructions), indicating a lack of consensus on appropriate management of infected AVGs. We undertook this study to evaluate if, in the setting of anastomotic involvement, brachial artery ligation distal to the origin of the deep brachial

Deep brain stimulation for the treatment of various chronic pain syndromes.

OBJECT: Electrical intracerebral stimulation (also referred to as deep brain stimulation [DBS]) is a tool for the treatment of chronic pain states that do not respond to less invasive or conservative treatment options. Careful patient selection, accurate target localization, and identification with intraoperative neurophysiological techniques and blinded test evaluation are the key requirements for success and good long-term results. The authors present their experience with DBS for the treatment of various chronic pain syndromes. METHODS: In this study 56 patients with different forms of neu

Surgical management of ventral epidural cerebrospinal fluid leak: a scoping review and illustrative case.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a neurological disorder caused by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, most often spinal in origin, and is characterized by orthostatic headache, nausea, and cognitive impairment that can markedly reduce quality of life. Epidural blood patching (EBP) is first-line therapy, but spinal leaks due to ventral dural tears are less likely to respond and often require surgical repair. This scoping review synthesizes current evidence on surgical management of ventral spinal CSF leaks from dural tears and presents an illustrative case of osteophyte

First-generation merozoites of caprine Eimeria christenseni are capable to invade and egress primary host endothelial cells in vitro.

The caprine Eimeria christenseni species belongs to the phylogenetic clade of pathogenic ruminant Eimeria, replicating within the endothelial cells of central lymph capillaries of the ileum villi in vivo. Investigations on E. christenseni-host endothelial cell interactions, including cell invasion, egress, apoptosis, senescence, cell cycle, cytoskeleton, cell metabolism and endothelium-derived innate immune reactions are possible to achieve through permissive in vitro culture systems. Therefore, we here established a suitable in vitro E. christenseni (strain GC) culture system using primary bo

Deciphering the Cape Gooseberry Fruits Mycobiome for Further Safety Improvement Postharvest.

Cape gooseberries are exquisitely flavored fruits; their rapid deterioration reduces their shelf life. Understanding the unique mycobiome of fruit peels is an essential step in identifying the taxa causing postharvest loss. The current study proposes to analyze the fungal communities of cape gooseberry peels collected from an organic orchard at unripe and ripe stages and purchased from open-air market sites, using the ITS2 region metabarcoding. According to the Kruskal-Wallis test, there were no statistically significant differences found in either the phylogenetic or non-phylogenetic alpha di

Isolation and characterization of Streptococcus agalactiae inducing mass mortalities in cultured Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with trials for disease control using zinc oxide nanoparticles and ethanolic leaf extracts of some medicinal plants.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus, GBS) induces a serious infection that can harm not only aquatic life but also humans and other animals. In a fish farm in southern Egypt, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has developed an epidemic with clinical symptoms resembling piscine streptococcosis. RESULTS: Initial microscopic inspection of the affected fish brain and kidney indicated the presence of Gram-positive cocci. S. agalactiae was effectively isolated and identified using nucleotide homology of the 16S rRNA and species-specific PCR. The partial 16S rRNA sequence w

Additional hepatic 166Ho-radioembolization in patients with neuroendocrine tumours treated with 177Lu-DOTATATE; a single center, interventional, non-randomized, non-comparative, open label, phase II study (HEPAR PLUS trial).

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumours (NET) consist of a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with various organs of origin. At diagnosis 21% of the patients with a Grade 1 NET and 30% with a Grade 2 NET have distant metastases. Treatment with peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) shows a high objective response rate and long median survival after treatment. However, complete remission is almost never achieved. The liver is the most commonly affected organ in metastatic disease and is the most incriminating factor for patient survival. Additional treatment of liver disease after PRRT may impro

Diversifying crops for food and nutrition security - a case of teff.

There are more than 50000 known edible plants in the world, yet two-thirds of global plant-derived food is provided by only three major cereals - maize (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rice (Oryza sativa). The dominance of this triad, now considered truly global food commodities, has led to a decline in the number of crop species contributing to global food supplies. Our dependence on only a few crop species limits our capability to deal with challenges posed by the adverse effects of climate change and the consequences of dietary imbalance. Emerging evidence suggests that climate cha

Dietary patterns and exposure to non-persistent endocrine-disrupting chemicals during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to non-persistent endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is widespread, causing various adverse health effects, especially during pregnancy. Diet is a major source of EDCs and the identification of dietary patterns that give rise to higher exposure levels is crucial. We aimed to explore the relationship between dietary patterns during pregnancy and exposure to non-persistent EDCs. METHODS: We included 640 pregnant women from the Barcelona Life Study Cohort (BiSC), Spain. Using food frequency questionnaires (2nd trimester), we estimated ultraprocessed food (UPF) consumption

Exposure of Wild Ruminants to Toxoplasma gondii in Alpine Ecosystems, NE Spain.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with a complex life cycle that involves warm-blooded animals as intermediate hosts and felids as definitive hosts. Its epidemiology in alpine ecosystems remains poorly understood. This study presents the first long-term investigation of T. gondii exposure in wild ruminants in the Pyrenees (NE Spain), where definitive hosts are scarce. Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica; n = 1045) and mouflon (Ovis aries musimon; n = 115) sera collected between 2001 and 2024 were tested (Modified Agglutination Test, ELISA-IDvet, ELISA-IDEXX) for the presence of T. go
