Joint position sense and vibratory perception sense in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type III (hypermobility type).

Neurophysiological deficits could make patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) type III (hypermobility type) more vulnerable to musculoskeletal problems, particularly to joint instability. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether joint position sense (JPS) and vibratory perception sense (VPS) in EDS type III patients in the knee and shoulder joints are impaired. Thirty-two female EDS type III patients as defined by the Villefranche criteria and 32 individually gender- and age-matched healthy control subjects were included in the study. Range of motion was determined using a goni…

A Cognitive Neuroscience View of Schizophrenic Symptoms: Abnormal Activation of a System for Social Perception and Communication.

We will review converging evidence that language related symptoms of the schizophrenic syndrome such as auditory verbal hallucinations arise at least in part from processing abnormalities in posterior language regions. These language regions are either adjacent to or overlapping with regions in the (posterior) temporal cortex and temporo-parietal occipital junction that are part of a system for processing social cognition, emotion, and self representation or agency. The inferior parietal and posterior superior temporal regions contain multi-modal representational systems that may also provide

Induced deficits in speed perception by transcranial magnetic stimulation of human cortical areas V5/MT+ and V3A.

In this report, we evaluate the role of visual areas responsive to motion in the human brain in the perception of stimulus speed. We first identified and localized V1, V3A, and V5/MT+ in individual participants on the basis of blood oxygenation level-dependent responses obtained in retinotopic mapping experiments and responses to moving gratings. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was then used to disrupt the normal functioning of the previously localized visual areas in each participant. During the rTMS application, participants were required to perform delayed discrimination…

Perception of self motion during and after passive rotation of the body around an earth-vertical axis.

We investigated the perception of self-rotation using constant-velocity chair rotations. Subjects signalled self motion during three independent tasks (1) by pushing a button when rotation was first sensed, when velocity reached a peak, when velocity began to decrease, and when velocity reached zero, (2) by rotating a disc to match the perceived motion of the body, or (3) by changing the static position of the dial such that a bigger change in its position correlated with a larger perceived velocity. All three tasks gave a consistent quantitative measure of perceived angular velocity. We found…

Caring and daring to complain: an examination of UK National Phobics Society members' perception of primary care.

This paper examines perception of primary care provision from the perspective of service users who are members of the UK National Phobics Society (NPS). It contributes to qualitative research on user perception of health care, and presents user recommendations for service improvement by examining the results of in-depth interviews with 40 participants (35 females, 5 males). In addition, the paper contributes to methodological debates concerning appropriate ways to access user perceptions. In addressing this secondary objective, it suggests that support group members may be particularly well pl…

Integration efficiency for speech perception within and across sensory modalities by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired individuals.

In face-to-face speech communication, the listener extracts and integrates information from the acoustic and optic speech signals. Integration occurs within the auditory modality (i.e., across the acoustic frequency spectrum) and across sensory modalities (i.e., across the acoustic and optic signals). The difficulties experienced by some hearing-impaired listeners in understanding speech could be attributed to losses in the extraction of speech information, the integration of speech cues, or both. The present study evaluated the ability of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners to integ

Auditory perception and attention as reflected by the brain event-related potentials in children with Asperger syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Language development is delayed and deviant in individuals with autism, but proceeds quite normally in those with Asperger syndrome (AS). We investigated auditory-discrimination and orienting in children with AS using an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm that was previously applied to children with autism. METHODS: ERPs were measured to pitch, duration, and phonetic changes in vowels and to corresponding changes in non-speech sounds. Active sound discrimination was evaluated with a sound-identification task. RESULTS: The mismatch negativity (MMN), indexing sound-discriminatio

Combined hormonal contraceptive trials: variable data collection and bleeding assessment methodologies influence study outcomes and physician perception.

Initially approved for use in the United States nearly 50 years ago, oral hormonal contraceptives containing both estrogen and progestin have undergone steady improvements in safety and convenience. Concurrent with improvements in safety associated with decreasing doses of both steroids, there has been an increased incidence of unscheduled bleeding and spotting. There exist no standards regarding data collection techniques and methods, and reporting and analysis of bleeding and spotting events during combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) trials. For the regulatory review of hormonal contracept

Using a speech perception neural network computer simulation to contrast neuroanatomic versus neuromodulatory models of auditory hallucinations.

A number of studies suggest that schizophrenia may arise from overzealous pruning of synapses that are an extension of normal developmental pruning during adolescence. Moreover, there has been a long history of studies suggesting that this disorder arises from alterations in the dopaminergic neuromodulatory systems. In order to further assess and compare these two hypotheses, a computer simulation of some aspects of speech perception was developed utilizing a recurrent, backpropagation model of working memory previously reported by Elman . This system was found to produce spontaneous percepts …

Left superior temporal gyrus activation during sentence perception negatively correlates with auditory hallucination severity in schizophrenia patients.

The left superior temporal cortex, which supports linguistic functions, has consistently been reported to activate during auditory-verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia patients. It has been suggested that auditory hallucinations and the processing of normal external speech compete for common neurophysiological resources. We tested the hypothesis of a negative relationship between the clinical severity of hallucinations and local brain activity in posterior linguistic regions while patients were listening to external speech. Fifteen right-handed patients with schizophrenia and daily auditory

Perception of control over anxiety mediates the relation between catastrophic thinking and social anxiety in social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia (social anxiety disorder) assume that individuals with social phobia experience anxiety in social situations in part because they overestimate the social cost associated with a potentially negative outcome of a social interaction. Some emotion theorists, on the other hand, point to the perception of control over anxiety-related symptoms as a determinant of social anxiety. In order to examine the relationship between perceived emotional control (PEC), estimated social cost (ESC), and subjective anxiety, we compared three alternative structural equation models: …

Perception of health-related quality of life and psychological status in oldest hospitalized patients without cognitive impairment.

The most diffuse questionnaires on health-related quality of life (HRQL) and/or psychological status (PS) consider all subjects older than 74 years, for normative reference values, in a single group without any further separation for age decades. Their authors assume that there are no further age-related differences, since older patients had a severely limited autonomy and lose the capacity of grading the severity of the diseases they are affected. Healthy subjects older than 80, without mental impairment (WMI) present an acceptable HRQL, PS and a perception of health status. No data are avail…

Transcutaneous electrical acustimulation can reduce visceral perception in patients with the irritable bowel syndrome: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Acupuncture has been used as a therapy for various gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, there is scant information on the effect of acupuncture on gut physiology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEAS) on rectal tone, compliance and perception in IBS patients. METHODS: Seven patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS were studied during control, sham stimulation and acupoints (ST36 and P6) stimulation periods. Rectal tone, compliance and perception to rectal balloon distension we…

[The "Compli'Asthme" therapeutic observation survey on good use of inhaled drugs for asthma: perception by general practitioners].

A cross sectional survey was conducted in 2000 in coordination with the CHIESI medical representatives among 1758 French physicians caring for patients with persistent asthma (80% general practitioners, 20% specialists). This "Compli'Asthme" survey was based on a self-administered questionnaire designed to learn more about the physicians' experience with good use of inhaled drugs and to collect information on therapeutic observance, corticophobia, and use of prescribed inhalers. Poor observance was noted as an important problem by 58-85% of the participants. Most of the problems were related t
