The Changing Spectrum of Cognitive Impairment in People with HIV; Establishment and Updates of the International HIV-Cognition Working Group.

With the widespread availability of effective antiretroviral therapy, the spectrum of cognitive impairment in people with HIV has changed from a subcortical dementia to milder impairment. The 2007 criteria for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) provided a methodological approach to classify milder and asymptomatic forms. Research using these criteria found that around 45% of people with HIV had HAND. This does not align with clinical observations that people with HIV supressed on modern treatment generally have good clinical outcomes, including cognitively. HAND criteria have sever

The non-linear relationship between self-reported cognitive concerns and performance-based cognitive dysfunction in people with multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

Existing research suggests a weak, inconsistent link between self-reported cognitive concerns (SCC) and performance-based measures of cognitive dysfunction in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). This study aimed to evaluate for a non-linear relationship between SCC and cognitive impairment in pwMS. A consecutive sample of 933 pwMS routinely completed the Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS (MACFIMS) battery at a Canadian neuropsychiatry clinic between 2020 and 2025. Covariates included age, sex, Expanded Disability Status Scale scores, disease duration, disease course, Wechsler T

Unmasking the invisible: Correlates and impact of cognitive complaints in MS.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in multiple sclerosis (MS) to capture subjective aspects of disease burden. However, the relationship between perceived cognitive deficits, objective cognitive impairment, psychological symptoms, and functional outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 263 people with MS. Objective cognition was assessed using the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS). Subjective cognitive complaints were derived from selected items of the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, while indepen

Psychological outcomes of extended reality interventions in spinal cord injury rehabilitation: a systematic scoping review.

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic scoping review. OBJECTIVES: Extended reality (XR) is becoming a recognisable tool for assisting in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. While the success of XR mediated interventions is often evaluated based on improvements in physical and functional performance, the present systematic scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence on reported psychological outcomes of XR interventions in SCI rehabilitation. In doing so, we aimed to contribute towards an adaptation of XR that is meaningful for individuals living with SCI. METHODS: Seven bibliometric dat

Utilizing machine learning algorithms for predicting Anxiety-Depression Comorbidity Syndrome in Gastroenterology Inpatients (ADCS-GI).

BACKGROUND: Accurately diagnosing Anxiety-Depression Comorbidity Syndrome in Gastroenterology Inpatients (ADCS-GI) shows significant challenges as traditional diagnostic methods fail to meet expectations due to patient hesitance and non-psychiatric healthcare professionals' limitations. Therefore, the need for objective diagnostics highlights the potential of machine learning in identifying and treating ADCS-GI. METHODS: A total of 1186 ADCS patients were recruited for this study. We conducted extensive studies for the dataset, including data quantification, equilibrium, and correlation analy

Perceived social support in the daily life of people with Parkinson's disease: a distinct role and potential classifier.

Motor outcomes in Parkinson's disease (PD) have long been the primary diagnostic criteria and treatment targets. While non-motor outcomes of PD impact daily well-being, they are rarely targeted by interventions or utilized for classification. Despite promising evidence, the contributions of perceived social support (PSS) to PD detection and well-being in real-world settings remain unclear. Using remote monitoring technologies, we investigated the relationship between PSS and three non-motor measures-cognition, anxiety, and depression-in 92 participants: 45 PD and 47 matched-controls. To examin

From Inner Sense to Outer Action: Interoception and Impulsive Compulsive Behavior Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive-compulsive behavior disorders (ICBDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) include impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviors, often linked to dopaminergic treatment and altered reward processing. Interoception, the perception of internal bodily signals, plays a key role in emotional regulation and decision-making. Neuroimaging studies suggest that alterations in interoceptive and reward-related brain circuits may underlie ICDs in PD. However, the relationship between interoception and ICDs remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between i

Auramine O, food dye induces cognitive impairment, anxiety, alters synaptic transmission and neural growth in zebrafish model.

Synthetic food dyes, widely used to enhance the visual appeal of food and beverages, are associated with potential neurobehavioral impacts, particularly in children. Despite its banned status in many regions, Auramine O (AO) has been detected as a contaminant in various food products. In silico studies have demonstrated that AO can induce neurotoxic effects. Zebrafish were exposed to varying concentrations of AO (5 and 10 mg/L) and acrylamide at 100 mg/L in the positive control (PC) group. Influenza A Virus PB1-F2 Induces Affective Disorder by Interfering Synaptic Plasticity in Hippocampal Dentate Gyrus.

Influenza A virus (IAV) infection, which leads to millions of new cases annually, affects many tissues and organs of the human body, including the central nervous system (CNS). The incidence of affective disorders has increased after the flu pandemic; however, the potential mechanism has not been elucidated. PB1-F2, a key virulence molecule of various influenza virus strains, has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce host inflammation; however, its role in the CNS has not been studied. In this study, we constructed and injected PB1-F2 into the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), a re

[The Educational Aspect in Promoting a Low-Sodium Diet, Physical Activity and Therapy Adherence among Patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Disease: A Literature Review].

Background. Polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common monogenic cause of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and, thus, of kidney transplantation and dialysis. Educational interventions aimed to improve adherence to therapy, physical performance, and adequate food intake in patients can slow down disease progression by developing self-care skills, which are useful to promote their autonomy while aligning their life plans and required treatments. The aim of this review is to analyze the adherence of patients with polycystic kidney to pharmacological therapy, low-sodium diet, and physical

A systematic hybrid machine learning approach for stress prediction.

Stress is becoming an increasingly prevalent health issue, seriously affecting people and putting their health and lives at risk. Frustration, nervousness, and anxiety are the symptoms of stress and these symptoms are becoming common (40%) in younger people. It creates a negative impact on human lives and damages the performance of each individual. Early prediction of stress and the level of stress can help to reduce its impact and different serious health issues related to this mental state. For this, automated systems are required so they can accurately predict stress levels. This study prop

Viewer and object mental rotation in young adults with psychotic disorders.

Schizophrenia patients have difficulty with processing visuo-spatial information, which may explain their deficits with considering other people's point-of-view. Processing visuo-spatial information operates on egocentric and allocentric frames of reference. Here, we tested the ability of individuals at different stages of psychotic disorders, specifically ultra-high-risk for psychosis individuals, as well as first-episode psychosis, and chronic schizophrenia patients, to perform a viewer mental rotation task and an object mental rotation task. The two tasks were differentiated only by the ins
