Mycobacterium abscessus Associated Peritonitis with CAPD Successfully Treated Using a Linezolid and Tedizolid Containing Regimen Suggested Immunomodulatory Effects.

BACKGROUND Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the most important mycobacteria, but its associated peritonitis in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) appears relative rare, and the treatment regimen of the antibiotics are still unclear. CASE REPORT A 38-year-old female with chronic glomerulonephritis on CAPD who was diagnosed with M. abscessus-associated peritonitis. Symptoms exacerbated despite treatment with a 3-antibiotic regimen combining clarithromycin, imipenem/cilastatin (IPM/CS), and minocycline (MINO). However, after changing IPM/CS and MINO to linezolid (LZD), …

The novel iron chelator, DIBI, attenuates inflammation and improves outcome in colon ascendens stent peritonitis-induced experimental sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is the result of a dysregulated host immune response to an infection. An ideal therapy would target both the underlying infection and the dysregulated immune response. DIBI, a novel iron-binding polymer, was specifically developed as an antimicrobial agent and has also demonstrated in vivo anti-inflammatory properties. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to further investigate the effects of DIBI with and without the antibiotic imipenem (IMI) in colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP)-induced experimental sepsis. METHODS: Vehicle, DIBI and/or IMI were administered in C57BL/6 mice…

Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Acute Liver Injury and Survival in a Rat Cecal Slurry Peritonitis Model.

BACKGROUND: The effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in sepsis remain unclear. This study evaluated its effects on acute liver injury and survival in a rat model. METHODS: Cecal slurry peritonitis was induced in male rats, which were then randomly allocated into the HBOT and control groups. In the survival experiment, six 90 min HBOT sessions (2.6 atmospheres absolute 100% oxygen) were performed over 48 h; the survival rate was determined 14 days after sepsis induction. In the acute liver injury experiment, three HBOT sessions were performed, followed by liver and plasma harvesting, 24…

Dynamics of Cytokine Profile Indicators Changes in Animals with Acute Generalized Peritonitis on the Background of Diabetes Mellitus.

In acute peritonitis, any surgical intervention leads to impaired immune protection with the development of postoperative purulent-septic complications, which increases several times the likelihood of death, especially in people with secondary immunodeficiency as a consequence diabetes mellitus. We aimed to study the dynamics of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine content in rat serum under experimental acute generalized peritonitis on the background of diabetes mellitus. Fifty-six white rats were used for the study. The determination of the serum cytokine profile was performed by enzyme-linke…

In Vitro Evaluation of Curcumin-Encapsulated Chitosan Nanoparticles against Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus and Pharmacokinetics Study in Cats.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important feline viral disease, causing an overridden inflammatory response that results in a high mortality rate, primarily in young cats. Curcumin is notable for its biological activities against various viral diseases; however, its poor bioavailability has hindered its potential in therapeutic application. In this study, curcumin was encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles to improve its bioavailability. Curcumin-encapsulated chitosan (Cur-CS) nanoparticles were synthesised based on the ionic gelation technique and were spherical and cuboidal in shap…

Evaluating the best empirical antibiotic therapy in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening complication of advanced cirrhosis. By studying the susceptibility of isolated organisms and analyzing empirical antibiotic therapy combined with clinical outcomes, we aimed to find an improved empirical antibiotic therapy by considering the individual acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) grade for patients with or without sepsis. METHODS: Clinical outcomes of 182 patients were assessed retrospectively with multivariable regression analysis. Each of the 223 isolates was individually evaluated regarding susceptibil…

Bacterial peritonitis in a patient with malignant ascites caused by pancreatic carcinoma: Case report and review of literature.

Bacterial peritonitis, an infection of the ascitic fluid, can be classified etiologically as spontaneous or secondary bacterial peritonitis. The former is mainly caused by portal hypertension and its subsequent effects, whereas the latter is caused by the direct dissemination of bacteria into the peritoneal cavity. Previous reports have described some distinguishing features of these two entities. Here, we report the first known case of bacterial peritonitis with Aeromonas hydrophilia and Escherichia coli in a patient with malignant ascites associated with pancreatic carcinoma who exhibited fe…

Use of drains and post-operative complications in secondary peritonitis for complicated acute appendicitis at a national hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is the main cause of emergency surgical care. Post-operative patients with complicated acute appendicitis present complications, many of them expected. The use of drains is one of the measures to prevent these complications; however, recent meta-analyzes do not justify this therapeutic measure. This study evaluates the relationship between use and non-use of drains, post-operative complications in patients with complicated peritonitis secondary to acute appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted. The outcomes were analyzed …

[A Case of Effective Palliative Care with CART for Refractory Ascites Associated with Cancerous Peritonitis of Gastric Cancer].

Refractory ascites associated with cancerous peritonitis causes abdominal tension and reduced oral intake. Frequent ascites drainage can cause rapid worsening ofa patient's general condition. Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART)for refractory ascites was first covered in 1981, and the general conditions ofpatients and their symptoms could be improved after undergoing CART. Herein, we report a case of effective palliative care with CART for refractory ascites associated with cancerous peritonitis. A 66-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because ofabdominal distens…

Resection with primary anastomosis vs nonrestorative resection for perforated diverticulitis with peritonitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: It is still controversial whether the optimal operation for perforated diverticulitis with peritonitis is primary anastomosis (PRA) or nonrestorative resection (NRR). The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate mortality and morbidity rates following emergency resection for perforated diverticulitis with peritonitis and ostomy reversal, as well as ostomy nonreversal rates. METHOD: The Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE via Ovid, CINAHL and Web of Science databases were systematically searched. Mortality was the primary end-point. A subgroup meta-analysis of…

Severe persistent hypocholesterolemia after emergency gastrointestinal surgery predicts in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients with diffuse peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cholesterol acts as a negative acute phase reactant. Total cholesterol decreases after surgery and in various pathological conditions, including trauma, sepsis, burns, and liver dysfunction. This study aimed to determine whether hypocholesterolemia after emergency gastrointestinal (GI) surgery is associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with diffuse peritonitis. METHODS: The medical records of 926 critically ill patients who had undergone emergency GI surgery for diffuse peritonitis, between January 2007 and December 2015, were retrospectively analyzed. The integra…

Characterizing replication kinetics and plaque production of type I feline infectious peritonitis virus in three feline cell lines.

Investigating type I feline coronaviruses (FCoVs) in tissue culture is critical for understanding the basic virology, pathogenesis, and virus-host interactome of these important veterinary pathogens. This has been a perennial challenge as type I FCoV strains do not easily adapt to cell culture. Here we characterize replication kinetics and plaque formation of a model type I strain FIPV Black in Fcwf-4 cells established at Cornell University (Fcwf-4 CU). We determined that maximum virus titers (>107 pfu/mL) were recoverable from infected Fcwf-4 CU cell-free supernatant at 20 h post-infection. T

Chromosome replication as a measure of bacterial growth rate during Escherichia coli infection in the mouse peritonitis model.

The efficacy of most antibiotics is dependent on active bacterial growth, yet little is known about the growth dynamics during infection. Therefore, means to measure in-host bacterial growth rate is of importance. Here, we use chromosome replication as readout for in situ bacterial growth rate during infection; obtained from a single biological specimen. We have applied two independent methods: quantitative PCR (qPCR) and fluorescence microscopy, to quantify the level of chromosome replication present during Escherichia coli propagation in the mouse peritonitis model. We find that the methods …
