Cardiovascular screening in homeless outreach: An operationally-ethical protocol.

BACKGROUND: Homeless individuals experience disproportionately high rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet remain underrepresented in formal health screening programs. While community-based organizations frequently conduct outreach, few have established ethical, standardized, or replicable methods for assessing physiological risk in field settings. Existing models range from passive, meals-only outreach to costly mobile clinics with limited reach, leaving a critical gap that this low-resource, agile framework is designed to address. OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and implementatio

Functional disability and cognition in relation to residential transitions in older adults: Evidence from three French cohorts, 1988-2018.

BACKGROUND: Aging is often accompanied by increasing difficulties in daily living that may compromise aging in place. In France, three main housing types can be distinguished: ordinary home (OH), intermediate housing (IH) and nursing home (NH). This study aimed to explore the relationship between functional disability, cognition, and residential transitions in older adults. METHODS: Participants aged 65 years and older living in OH at baseline were drawn from three French population-based cohorts (PAQUID, Three-City and AMI), followed for up to 30 years. A hierarchical indicator of functional

Levers to decrease exposure to harmful chemicals: the case of Personal Care Products and cosmetics.

Many chemicals used in personal care products (PCPs) have suspected health effects. Thus, PCP use may be an important modifiable source of chemical exposures. We conducted a five-day intervention during which women (N = 103, ages 18-30) in Grenoble, France, were asked to refrain from using their usual PCPs and were provided with alternative products free from the chemicals of interest. These included eleven phenols, sixteen phthalates, and two glycol ethers. Participants collected a sample of each urinary event for 24-hour periods before and on the last day of the intervention, from which chem

Functional disability screening in the elderly: a machine learning approach with ELSI-Brazil data.

The aim of this study was to investigate, validate and apply Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to predict functional disability in elderly individuals using data from ELSI-Brazil. Furthermore, it sought to map the performance of the models and identify key multidimensional variables-encompassing sociodemographic and economic aspects, health status, behaviors, mental health and access to services-that could serve as early risk indicators and, based on the selected model, understand which characteristics favor or disfavor the screening of functional disability. Data from ELSI-Brazil (2015-2016) w

Probable and confirmed sarcopenia are still better predictors of disability than sarcopenic obesity following ESPEN/EASO consensus steps.

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing different operational definitions of sarcopenia (S) and sarcopenic obesity (SO) defined according to the ''European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and the European Association for the Study of Obesity'' (ESPEN/EASO) criteria with functionality are scarce. Our aim is to investigate whether SO or S with different skeletal muscle mass (SMM) adjustments is better associated with functional disability. METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out in older individuals ≥ 65 years of age in a geriatric outpatient clinic. Probable and confirmed sarcope

A Portrait of Late Life Homelessness in Calgary, Alberta.

Neurocognitive and Psychiatric Markers for Addiction: Common vs. Specific Endophenotypes for Heroin and Amphetamine Dependence.

BACKGROUND: The differential utility of neurocognitive impulsivity and externalizing/ internalizing traits as putative endophenotypes for dependence on heroin vs. amphetamine is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study aims to determine: (1) whether neurocognitive impulsivity dimensions and externalizing/internalizing traits are correlated between siblings discordant for heroin and amphetamine dependence; and (2) which of these associations are common across substances and which are substance- specific. METHODS: Pearson correlations between individuals with 'pure' heroin and amphetamine de

Efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation in reducing impulsivity in borderline personality disorder (TIMBER): study protocol of a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is closely related to suicide risk and destructive and aggressive behaviors. Although transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown its promising effects as an intervention to modulate impulsivity, no study has explored its potential regarding BPD. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a multicenter, crossover, double-blind study comparing active versus sham tDCS (2 mA, 30 min), applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for five consecutive days in 50 BPD patients. Participants will be assessed for impul

Persistent Symptoms in People With Celiac Disease Despite Gluten-Free Diet: A Concern?

Studies show that people with celiac disease have reduced well-being and have persistent symptoms, mainly related to the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to analyze how persons in a celiac disease member association report their symptoms, health, and life satisfaction. A questionnaire, with both open and closed questions, was distributed to all members (n = 726) of a celiac association in the southeast of Sweden. The response rate was 74.5%, of which 524 (72%) said they had received a celiac disease diagnosis and were thus included in the study. Almost half of the participants

Internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy for significant others of treatment-refusing problem gamblers: A randomized wait-list controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Problem gambling can cause severe harm to concerned significant others (CSOs) in the form of, for example, relationship problems, financial difficulties, and mental and physical illness. CSOs are important for their ability to support problem gamblers and motivate them to change. This study investigated the effect of an Internet-based intervention for CSOs of treatment-refusing problem gamblers on (a) gambling-related harm, (b) the gamblers' treatment-seeking rate, and (c) the relationship satisfaction and mental health of the CSOs. METHOD: A total of 100 CSOs of problem gamblers w

Observed Outcomes: An Approach to Calculate the Optimum Number of Psychiatric Beds.

The number of psychiatric beds, in most developed countries, has decreased progressively since the late 1950s. Many clinicians believe that this reduction has gone too far. But how can we determine the number of psychiatric beds a mental health system needs? While the population health approach has advantages over the normative approach, it makes assumptions about optimal and minimum duration of hospitalization required for various psychiatric disorders. In this paper, we describe a naturalistic approach that estimates the required number of psychiatric beds by comparing the bed levels at whic

Use of psychoactive drugs predicts functional disability among older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether the use of psychoactive drugs would be a predictor of incidence of functional disability among seniors living in community. METHODS: It is a population-based longitudinal study, developed between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2011, with older adults living in community. The association between the use of psychoactive drugs and the development of functional disability for instrumental (IADLs) and basic (BADLs) activities of daily living was tested using the extended Cox proportional hazards model, which considers the measure of exposure of interest throughout

Risk assessment communication difficulties: An empirical examination of the effects of categorical versus probabilistic risk communication in sexually violent predator decisions.

Expert testimony concerning risk and its communication to the trier of fact has important implications for some of the most significant legal decisions. In a simulated sexual violent predator hearing, we examined how mock jurors interpret and use recidivism risk expert testimony communicated either categorically, using verbal labels, or probabilistically, using numeric values. Based upon the STATIC-99R, we compared mock jurors' decision-making and verdicts when we manipulated the style of risk communication across four different risk levels. In terms of verdict decisions, we found that higher

Stages of change in audiology: comparison of three self-assessment measures.

OBJECTIVE: In a clinical setting, theories of health behaviour change could help audiologists and other hearing health care professionals understand the barriers that prevent people with hearing problems to seek audiological help. The transtheoretical (stages of change) model of health behaviour change is one of these theories. It describes a person's journey towards health behaviour change (e.g. seeking help or taking up rehabilitation) in separate stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and, finally, maintenance. A short self-assessment measure of stages of change may g
