Development of a collaborative chronic care model for management of cardiometabolic disease in low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) which include cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, hypertension, and other metabolic syndromes represent a significant global health burden. Three quarters of global CVD deaths occur in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) and CMD account for approximately 35 percent of deaths in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region. The COVID-19 Pandemic significantly accelerated the transformation of the landscape in the management of patients with multiple long-term conditions, prompting innovation in healthcare delivery and highlighting the importance of mo

Temporal Dynamics of Latent Fingerprint Microbiomes: A First Step to Decoding Crime Evidence.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Latent fingerprints (LFs) have been a cornerstone of forensic identification through conventional friction ridge pattern analysis; however, the microbial communities they harbor remain a largely untapped source of information. Estimation of the time-since-deposition (TsDp) of LFs is still an unresolved challenge in forensic science, as existing 2D and 3D imaging methodologies provide limited temporal resolution. This study investigated whether temporal shifts in LF-associated microbiota could potentially complement dating approaches via genetic analyses. METHODS: LFs we

Subtype-Specific Efficacy of Topical Streptococcus Postbiotic Emollient in Adolescents and Adults With Atopic Dermatitis and Comorbid Allergies: A Post-hoc Analysis of a Randomized, Double-Blind, Vehicle-Controlled Trial.

Topical Streptococcus postbiotic emollient (Strain CX) has shown efficacy for mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis (AD) in a previous study; however, treatment responses according to allergic comorbidity status have not yet been explored. We conducted a post hoc analysis to evaluate the differential therapeutic effects of Strain CX in patients with AD stratified by the presence or absence of allergic comorbidities. This post hoc analysis was derived from a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial (Clinical Research Information Service of South Korea, KCT0007876). A total of 98 patients

Why are the implementation of and access to child developmental assessment within routine healthcare so difficult in Ethiopia? A descriptive qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental delays in early childhood present significant long-term challenges, making early developmental assessment crucial for effective intervention. Despite this, such assessments are not routinely implemented within routine healthcare services in Ethiopia. This study examines the barriers and facilitators affecting both the provision and accessibility of developmental assessments by exploring the experiences of health professionals and parents of under-five children. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in the Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia, between August 2

Determinants of health-seeking behavior of people on institutional delivery: evidence from qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Institutional delivery is an evidence-based option that substantially reduces risks to mothers and newborns. However, the existing literature provides an incomplete account of the determinants that influence individuals' choices about institutional delivery. This study explores the determinants (facilitators, barriers) of health-seeking behavior for institutional delivery in Nepal. METHODS: This study employed a focused ethnographic design, which allowed for an in-depth understanding of participants lived experiences in relation to health seeking behavior to institutional delivery

Biomechanical and neural correlates of FastFES versus Fast gait training in individuals post stroke: a randomized control trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Fast gait training, individually and when combined with functional electrical stimulation (FastFES), has been shown to improve walking function in individuals post stroke. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of these two gait training interventions are poorly understood. The purpose of this mechanism-focused gait rehabilitation randomized clinical trial is to assess the effects of Fast and FastFES gait training interventions on corticospinal neurophysiology, gait biomechanics, energy cost, and walking function in individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis.

Evaluating individual sensitivity to propofol through EEG complexity and information integration: from neural dynamics to precision anesthesia.

Objective.Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness during anesthesia is critical for advancing anesthesiology and neuroscience. However, given the high variability in individual sensitivity to anesthetic agents, accurately elucidating the relationship between individual characteristics and drug responses is also crucial for ensuring clinical anesthesia safety.Approach.This study utilized high-density EEG data from 20 participants under various propofol-induced sedation states. We stratified participants into low- and high-sensitivity cohorts based on their behavioral respon

Acceptability of Hypothetical HIV Cure-Related Research Modalities: A Cross-Sectional Study of People Living with HIV in Soweto, South Africa.

Various modalities are being explored in HIV cure-related research, but little is documented on their acceptability in Africa, where HIV is most prevalent. To address this, we conducted a cross-sectional study in Soweto, South Africa, assessing stated acceptability of five potential HIV cure-related research modalities and identifying associated factors. Between May and August 2024, we sampled 100 adults living with HIV who provided informed consent. Participants completed questionnaires of socio-demographics and the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability scale measuring general acceptability

Individual identities and stigma inequalities: insights from the experience of people affected by podoconiosis in Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Podoconiosis is a Skin Neglected Tropical Disease (SNTD) that affects impoverished individuals in tropical regions. While there is a substantial understanding of the stigma associated with podoconiosis, little is known about the podoconiosis-related stigma experience based on individual identities, such as gender, class, age, location and physical ability. Due to the power differentials associated with these identities, individuals experience health problems differently, resulting in health disparities. This paper aims to discuss the inequalities related to podoconiosis stigma du

Feasibility and cross-cultural validation of an adapted social skills group training programme (KONTAKTTM CHILD) for Chinese autistic children: a waitlist RCT protocol.

INTRODUCTION: School-age autistic children commonly experience social communication and interaction challenges in their everyday lives. While international evidence suggests that social skills group training (SSGT) programmes can support autistic children, improving their psychosocial functioning, to date there is no standardised evidence-based SSGT tailored towards the needs of autistic children aged 8-12 years living in the Chinese Mainland. Therefore, the primary objective of this study will be to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally adapted 16-session version of the s

Integrating participant feedback and concerns to improve community and individual level chemical exposure assessment reports.

BACKGROUND: As exposure assessment has shifted towards community-engaged research there has been an increasing trend towards reporting results to participants. Reports aim to increase environmental health literacy, but this can be challenging due to the many unknowns regarding chemical exposure and human health effects. This includes when reports encompass a wide-range of chemicals, limited reference or health standards exist for those chemicals, and/or incompatibility of data generated from exposure assessment tools with published reference values (e.g., comparing a wristband concentration to

Using artificial intelligence to identify patients with migraine and associated symptoms and conditions within electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Real-world evidence (RWE)-based on information obtained from sources such as electronic health records (EHRs), claims and billing databases, product and disease registries, and personal devices and health applications-is increasingly used to support healthcare decision making. There is variability in the collection of EHR data, which includes "structured data" in predefined fields (e.g., problem list, open claims, medication list, etc.) and "unstructured data" as free text or narrative. Healthcare providers are likely to provide more complete information as free text, but extractin

Integration of nurse-led virtual reviews with growth hormone device-linked patient adherence information: a mixed methods feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Easypod-connect™ for childhood growth disorders is a unique connected system that enables transmission of injection adherence information for recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH). Although this system has the potential to facilitate greater adherence, observational studies have shown declining adherence over prolonged periods when used without additional support. Supplemental nurse practitioner support has been envisaged but not investigated; in this study, we have undertaken feasibility analysis of nurse-led virtual reviews (NVR) in combination with easypod-connect™ in a sin
