PATIENT-PHYSICIAN FACE MASKING'S INFLUENCE ON THE POST-INTRAVITREAL INJECTION ENDOPHTHALMITIS.

PURPOSE: The authors sought to determine if universal face mask guidelines implemented during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic significantly influenced the incidence of endophthalmitis following intravitreal injections (IVI). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed the electronic health records from a retina-only practice located in Michigan. This study evaluated patients receiving IVIs over two distinct time periods of April 2019 to March 2020 and April 2020 to March 2021, which comprised our unmasked and masked groups, respectively. The authors then calculated the incidence o

Percutaneous Versus Surgical Femoral Cannulation in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) is increasing worldwide. In most cases, the surgical technique includes cannulation of the groin for the establishment of cardiopulmonary bypass, requiring a second surgical incision (SC) for exposure and cannulation of the femoral vessels. With the introduction of arterial closure devices, percutaneous cannulation (PC) of the groin has become a possible alternative. We performed a meta-analysis and systematic review to compare clinical endpoints between the patients who underwent PC and SC for MICS. METHODS: Three databases were assessed.

Urogynecologic Care for Women Who Are Incarcerated.

In the United States, approximately 180,700 women are incarcerated across jails and prisons, comprising a demographic with an aging population and a higher growth rate compared to men. Despite this demographic trend, research into urogynecologic care for women who are incarcerated is notably lacking, with few studies addressing pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence, and even fewer focusing on access to treatment options like vaginal pessaries or surgical interventions. Women who are incarcerated may face unique challenges in obtaining urogynecologic care, including limited access to medi

Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Complications After Prolapse Surgery.

IMPORTANCE: Obesity is a risk factor for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and independently associated with perioperative complications following prolapse surgery. Although weight loss surgery (WLS) may lead to weight loss and mitigate obesity-related comorbidities, it is associated with chronic malabsorption, which may also lead to increased perioperative complications. There have been no studies evaluating the impact of prior WLS on POP surgery outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the effect of WLS on complications after POP surgery. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohor
