The left occipitotemporal system in reading: disruption of focal fMRI connectivity to left inferior frontal and inferior parietal language areas in children with dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a severe reading disorder, which is characterized by dysfluent reading and impaired automaticity of visual word processing. Adults with dyslexia show functional deficits in several brain regions including the so-called "Visual Word Form Area" (VWFA), which is implicated in visual word processing and located within the larger left occipitotemporal VWF-System. The present study examines functional connections of the left occipitotemporal VWF-System with other major language areas in children with dyslexia. Functional connectivity MRI was used to assess connectivity of t

Where is your shoulder? Neural correlates of localizing others' body parts.

Neuropsychological studies, based on pointing to body parts paradigms, suggest that left posterior parietal lobe is involved in the visual processing of other persons' bodies. In addition, some patients have been found with mild deficit when dealing with abstract human representations but marked impairment with realistically represented bodies, suggesting that this processing could be modulated by the abstraction level of the body to be analyzed. These issues were examined in the present fMRI experiment, designed to evaluate the effects of visually processing human bodies of different abstract

Modulation of fusiform cortex activity by cholinesterase inhibition predicts effects on subsequent memory.

Cholinergic influences on memory are likely to be expressed at several processing stages, including via well-recognized effects of acetylcholine on stimulus processing during encoding. Since previous studies have shown that cholinesterase inhibition enhances visual extrastriate cortex activity during stimulus encoding, especially under attention-demanding tasks, we tested whether this effect correlates with improved subsequent memory. In a within-subject physostigmine versus placebo design, we measured brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging while healthy and mild Alzheimer's

An fMRI stroop task study of prefrontal cortical function in normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease.

Severe cortex lesions in the hippocampal, parahippocampal and medial temporal lobe (MTL) of Alzheimer's disease subjects have been observed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during memory task performance. To date, fMRI technology has not been used to investigate the frontal lobe function of Alzheimer's subjects. This study determines if fMRI can be used to assess altered prefrontal cortex activity during Stroop task performance in subjects wih mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed on 9 healthy eld

Fellow eye changes in optic neuritis correlate with the risk of multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies demonstrate early diffuse central nervous system (CNS) inflammation in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The clinically unaffected (fellow) eye of patients with unilateral optic neuritis (ON) may reflect the status of normal-appearing white matter in the CNS, which can be assessed electrophysiologically. OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between electrophysiological parameters in the fellow eye of ON patients, and risk of conversion to MS. METHODS: Forty-eight consecutive patients with acute unilateral ON were examined 12 months after ON of which 14 had MS,

Dynamic fearful gaze does not enhance attention orienting in individuals with Asperger's disorder.

Although impaired joint attention is one of the core clinical features of pervasive developmental disorder including autistic disorder and Asperger's disorder, experimental studies failed to report its impairment. This discrepancy might be the result of differences between real-life and experimental situations. The present study examined joint attention in 11 individuals with Asperger's disorder and 11 age-matched controls under naturalistic conditions using a target detection paradigm with dynamic emotional gaze cues. Although both groups showed gaze-triggered attention orienting as assessed

Dopaminergic response to drug words in cocaine addiction.

When exposed to drug conditioned cues (stimuli associated with the drug), addicted individuals experience an intense desire for the drug, which is associated with increased dopamine cell firing. We hypothesized that drug-related words can trigger activation in the mesencephalon, where dopaminergic cells are located. During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 15 individuals with cocaine use disorders and 15 demographically matched healthy control subjects pressed buttons for color of drug-related versus neutral words. Results showed that the drug words, but not neutral words, activate

[Early latency in pattern-reversal and flash mfVEP].

PURPOSE: The onset of cortical activity evoked by a visual stimulus, the early latency (fL), can be measured by the use of multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP). In this study we investigated differences in amplitude and fL between pattern-reversal and flash mfVEP. METHODS: The mfVEP was recorded from 20 subjects using flash and pattern-reversal stimuli. The recordings were done using a two-dimensional Laplacian derivation. After the signals from all 60 stimulus fields were squared and averaged, the sudden rise from baseline activity marked the beginning of evoked cortical activity, whic

A bilateral occipitotemporal network mediates face perception.

The aim of the present study was to further explore the neuronal mechanisms of face processing in healthy subjects which may help to understand the difficulties experienced by prosopagnosia subjects. A further goal was to compare face specific activation patterns in the right and left occipital face area (OFA) and fusiform face area (FFA) for famous faces, non-famous faces and caricatures of famous faces in four individuals suffering from developmental prosopagnosia (DP) and seven healthy controls, using functional magnetic resonance imaging and psychophysiological interaction analysis (PPI).

Association of a nonsynonymous variant of DAOA with visuospatial ability in a bipolar family sample.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are hypothesized to share some genetic background. METHODS: In a two-phase study, we evaluated the effect of five promising candidate genes for psychotic disorders, DAOA, COMT, DTNBP1, NRG1, and AKT1, on bipolar spectrum disorder, psychotic disorder, and related cognitive endophenotypes in a Finnish family-based sample ascertained for bipolar disorder. RESULTS: In initial screening of 362 individuals from 63 families, we found only marginal evidence for association with the diagnosis-based dichotomous classification. Those associations did not s

Eye hand coordination in children with cerebral palsy.

Reaching to grasp an object of interest requires complex sensorimotor coordination involving eye, head, hand and trunk. While numerous studies have demonstrated deficits in each of these systems individually, little is known about how children with cerebral palsy (CP) coordinate multiple motor systems for functional tasks. Here we used kinematics, remote eye tracking and a trunk support device to examine the functional coupling of the eye, head and hand and the extent to which it was constrained by trunk postural control in 10 children with CP (6-16 years). Eye movements in children with CP we

Self responses along cingulate cortex reveal quantitative neural phenotype for high-functioning autism.

Attributing behavioral outcomes correctly to oneself or to other agents is essential for all productive social exchange. We approach this issue in high-functioning males with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using two separate fMRI paradigms. First, using a visual imagery task, we extract a basis set for responses along the cingulate cortex of control subjects that reveals an agent-specific eigenvector (self eigenmode) associated with imagining oneself executing a specific motor act. Second, we show that the same self eigenmode arises during one's own decision (the self phase) in an interpersona

Individual differences in disgust sensitivity modulate neural responses to aversive/disgusting stimuli.

Little is known about how individual differences in trait disgust sensitivity modulate the neural responses to disgusting stimuli in the brain. Thirty-seven adult healthy volunteers completed the Disgust Scale (DS) and viewed alternating blocks of disgusting and neutral pictures from the International Affective Picture System while undergoing fMRI scanning. DS scores correlated positively with activations in brain regions previously associated with disgust (anterior insula, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex-temporal pole, putamen-globus pallidus, dorsal anterior cingulate, and visual cortex) and

Are dopaminergic pathways involved in theory of mind? A study in Parkinson's disease.

The "orbitofrontal" and "cingulate" frontostriatal loops and the mesolimbic dopaminergic system that modulates their function have been implicated in theory of mind (ToM). Parkinson's disease (PD) provides a model for assessing their role in humans. Results of the handful of previous studies of ToM in PD providing preliminary evidence of impairment remain controversial, mainly because the patients included in these studies were not accurately described, making it difficult to determine whether their ToM deficits were due to general cognitive deterioration or to a more specific dopaminergic def

Parieto-occipital sources account for the increase in alpha activity with working memory load.

The role of oscillatory alpha activity (8-13 Hz) in cognitive processing remains an open question. It has been debated whether alpha activity plays a direct role in the neuronal processing required for a given task or whether it reflects idling and/or functional inhibition. Recent electroencephalography (EEG) studies have demonstrated that alpha activity increases parametrically with load during retention in working memory paradigms. While it is known that the parieto-occipital cortex is involved in the generation of the spontaneous alpha oscillations, it remains unknown where the sources of t

Tracing syndrome-specific trajectories of attention across the lifespan.

This paper maintains that studies of atypical attention targeting one particular age group are unlikely to be informative of syndrome-specific deficits and their developmental changes. We propose a new approach to the study of attentional deficits in genetic disorders, arguing for tracing cross-syndrome developmental trajectories from infancy through childhood to adulthood. Few studies have incorporated a developmental approach to determine whether the pattern of deficits and proficiencies remains constant across developmental time. Fewer still have included a cross-syndrome perspective to add

Dissociation of egocentric and allocentric coding of space in visual search after right middle cerebral artery stroke.

Spatial representations rely on different frames of reference. Patients with unilateral neglect may behave as suffering from either egocentric or allocentric deficiency. The neural substrates representing these reference frames are still under discussion. Here we used a visual search paradigm to distinguish between egocentric and allocentric deficits in patients with right hemisphere cortical lesions. An attention demanding search task served to divide patients according to egocentric versus allocentric deficits. The results indicate that egocentric impairment was associated with damage in pre

Text - background polarity affects performance irrespective of ambient illumination and colour contrast.

In a series of experiments, proofreading performance was consistently better with positive polarity (dark text on light background) than with negative polarity displays (light text on dark background). This positive polarity advantage was independent of ambient lighting (darkness vs. typical office illumination) and of chromaticity (black and white vs. blue and yellow). A final experiment showed that colour contrast (red text on green background) could not compensate for a lack of luminance contrast. Physiological measures of effort and strain (breathing rate, heart rate, heart rate variabilit

Visual cortex activation in kinesthetic guidance of reaching.

The purpose of this research was to determine the cortical circuit involved in encoding and controlling kinesthetically guided reaching movements. We used (15)O-butanol positron emission tomography in ten blindfolded able-bodied volunteers in a factorial experiment in which arm (left/right) used to encode target location and to reach back to the remembered location and hemispace of target location (left/right side of midsagittal plane) varied systematically. Learning hierarchically structured action sequences is unaffected by prefrontal-cortex lesion.

This study tested the impact of prefrontal-cortex lesion on learning hierarchically structured action sequences. Using a visual-manual serial reaction time task, we had subjects first perform five blocks of trials with a hierarchically structured 14-element action sequence and then tested for sequence-specific learning by introducing a pseudo-random transfer sequence. Relative to control subjects (N = 39), we found that both lateral frontal (N = 16) and medial frontal (N = 18) patients showed reduced overall performance benefits across the training phase. In contrast, the negative transfer tes
