Single determinations of serum CA 15-3 levels were performed by sandwich enzyme immunoassay in 160 women: 77 patients with nonmalignant breast tumors (64 had fibrocystic disease, 11 had fibroadenoma, 2 had intraductal papilloma) and 83 patients with primary breast cancer prior to any treatment; the cut-off limit was established at 30 U/ml. A prototype Doppler probe was used laparoscopically to identify the cystic artery in 30 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This pilot study revealed that the probe provided valuable assistance in identifying the artery in 33.3% of the patients. In 10% of the patients, the Doppler identified the artery when standard dissection techniques failed to do so. The probe was particularly helpful in patients with acute cholecystitis.

Nine severely ill patients with a confirmed diagnosis of systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis were treated with recombinant gamma-interferon (gamma-IFN) in addition to the therapy they were previously receiving for their disease. In case of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), survival generally depends not on prenatal diagnosis, planned delivery, and immediate postnatal operation, but on the gravity of pulmonary hypoplasia and persistent hypertension (PPH). In a pilotstudy about medical, psychological and psychosocial factors in spontaneous and recurrent spontaneous abortions 47 women were investigated. 26 of them had one, 14 tow and 7 three or more recurrent spontaneous abortions.
