A broken power-law model of heart rate variability spectra in sleep.

A parametric description of RR-interval spectra was introduced in the study, using a broken power-law model in addition to the parametrization of oscillatory peaks. Then, the model was used to evaluate effects of age, sex and sleep architecture on heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy subjects. From a polysomnography database, 215 whole-night electrocardiograms (ECGs) were extracted. The fractal and oscillatory power-spectral densities (PSDs) were calculated from RR-intervals, then a broken power-law model was fitted using piecewise linear regression to the double-logarithmic PSD, determinin…

Association between high loop gain sleep apnea detected by respiratory self-similarity and left ventricular remodeling.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated if high loop gain (HLG), a specific sleep apnea endotype characterized by unstable respiratory control, is independently associated with adverse cardiac remodeling. METHODS: Using the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) data, a HLG surrogate was quantified using a polysomnographic algorithm measuring respiratory self-similarity (Central Respiratory Event Index [CREI] and respiratory Self-Similarity [SS%]). Cardiac structure was assessed via MRI. Multivariable linear regression analyzed probable HLG associations with the left ventricular mass-to-v

Respiratory event type and duration modulate PPG waveforms in OSA.

Objective.Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases circulatory system load and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Despite being biomarkers of vascular health, photoplethysmography (PPG) signal waveforms have not been systematically investigated in patients with OSA. Thus, we aimed to study the immediate effects of respiratory event characteristics on PPG waveforms and to examine potential patterns that could be associated with cardiovascular health.Approach.We retrospectively analyzed 520 clinical polysomnographies from suspected OSA patients, focusing on three PPG signal segments: 10 s be

Divergent sleep stage responses to hospitalization in pediatric inpatients: A wearable study of environmental, temporal, and demographic modulators.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is crucial for pediatric recovery, but quantitative evidence on how hospitalization characteristics affect objectively measured sleep architecture is limited. This study used consumer wearables to examine how environmental, temporal, and demographic factors affect specific sleep stages. METHODS: We conducted continuous sleep monitoring via wrist-worn wearables in 61 hospitalized children and adolescents, collecting 200 daily records. Multimodal analyses assessed associations between room occupancy, hospitalization duration, demographic factors (gender/age), and key sleep met

Disorder-specific alterations of transient oscillatory dynamics during sleep across cortical and subcortical networks.

Transient sleep oscillations reflect the dynamic coordination of cortical and subcortical circuits, modulated by slow oscillatory activity. However, the disorder-specific signatures of these events across neurological, pain, and sleep disorders remain poorly characterized. In this exploratory study, we analyzed transient oscillatory dynamics in 99 individuals, including healthy controls and patients with narcolepsy type 1, non-REM parasomnia, idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder, and fibromyalgia syndrome. Using slow oscillatory referenced time-frequency peak histograms, we applied principal

High night-to-night variability in obstructive sleep apnea severity is associated with prevalent cardiovascular disease.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: High night-to-night variability in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity is associated with cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and pulse wave velocity, yet associations with cardiovascular events remain unknown. This study investigates the association of multi-night OSA severity and night-to-night variability with the prevalence of non-fatal major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multi-night data were collected from people who purchased and used an FDA-cleared under-mattress sensor to track nightly OSA s

Restless legs syndrome determines whether periodic limb movements are associated with altered lipid profiles in sleep-disordered breathing.

OBJECTIVE: Periodic limb movements (PLM) during sleep are common in sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), but their independent association with cardiometabolic markers remains unclear. Restless legs syndrome (RLS), which frequently co-occurs with PLM, may modify this relationship. We investigated whether PLM are independently associated with cardiometabolic risk in SDB, and whether RLS modifies these associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 643 adults (mean age 45.9 years, 59.4% male) from the NSRR APOE dataset with in-laboratory polysomnography, PLM index, RLS assessment, and fasting …
