Carrier frequency of Spino-muscular atrophy in individuals of a reproductive age group from North India.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuro-muscular disorder caused by biallelic variations in Survival Motor Neuron 1 gene (SMN1) located on chromosome 5q13.2. It is the most common hereditary cause of neonatal death. Ethnicity specific studies are desirable for estimating the prevalence of carrier status of this disease in a population. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the carrier frequency of SMA among individuals of a reproductive age group in a North Indian cohort. METHODS: SMA carrier screening was offered to individuals of a reproductive age group (>18 years) visiting a tertiary ca

Impact of metabolic syndrome on cognitive decline in older age: protective or harmful, where is the pitfall?

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been found to be a risk factor for dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and its associated states. However, a definitive conclusion cannot be drawn from the available data. Discrepancies between the results are due to several factors, e.g., study design, heterogeneity of the population enrolled, reliability and sensitivity of detection tools for cognitive changes, cut-offs and criteria used to diagnose MetS, the outcome measures considered, MetS duration before the onset of cognitive decline, and also the analytical approach performed. Recently, a systematic revie

Preliminary DNA identification for the tsunami victims in Thailand.

The 2004 Southeast Asia Tsunami killed nearly 5,400 people in Southern Thailand, including foreign tourists and local residents. To recover DNA evidence as much as possible from the seriously decomposed bodies, we explored procedures of sample preparation from both bone and tooth samples as well as both mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Despite having failed to recover enough DNA for nuclear marker typing, we succeeded in obtaining fully informative results for mitochondrial markers (HV1 and HV2) from 258 tooth samples with a success rate of 51% (258/507). Using an organic DNA extraction meth

The impact of surgical timing on postoperative motion and stability following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

A prospective study was designed to determine the impact of surgical timing on postoperative motion and stability following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery. The study population was limited to acute ACL ruptures from downhill skiing undergoing arthroscopic ACL surgery without arthrotomy or surgical intervention for other ligamentous structures; 185 patients were entered into four separate groups based on the time interval from injury to surgery. Motion and stability were tested at multiple time points from the index surgery and adverse events were recorded. We found no

[Epidemiological investigation on bladder cancer and occupations].

A population-based case-control study was conducted in Boston, U.S.A., Manchester, U.K., and Nagoya, Japan to assess the associations of occupations with bladder cancer in men. In Nagoya, cancer cases were identified through Nagoya Bladder Cancer Registry, and controls were randomly selected from the general population using electoral registers. Study subjects, all males, analyzed were 430 cases and 397 controls in Boston; 339 and 493 in Manchester, and 220 and 443 in Nagoya, respectively. Occupations significantly related to an increased bladder cancer risk were those manufacturing or handlin

Anti-mitochondrial type M5 and anti-cardiolipin antibodies in autoimmune disorders: studies on their association and cross-reactivity.

In a series of 42 positive sera, anti-mitochondrial type M5 antibodies (AMA-M5) were found most frequently in patients with SLE (24) and SLE-like syndromes. Patients with AMA-M5 displayed a higher prevalence of thrombocytopenia, thrombosis, biological false positive seroreactions for syphilis, lupus-like anticoagulant activity and anti-cardiolipin antibodies in comparison with a group of 43 SLE AMA-M5 negative patients. The strong association between anti-phospholipid and AMA-M5 antibodies cannot be explained entirely by cross-reactivity between these two groups of antibodies, as indicated by

Proposing new body mass index and waist circumference cut-offs based on cardiometabolic risks for a Central Asia population: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Lower BMI cutoffs as compared to standard cut-offs have been recommended to reduce the risk of obesity-related co-morbidities in some ethnic populations (e.g. south Asian and Chinese populations). Recent attempts have also been made to establish ethnicity-specific BMI cutoffs to identify individuals affected with obesity in relation to type 2 diabetes risk in multi-ethnic populations based in the UK and North America. However, to date, there is yet to have any published work done to identify these cut-offs in Central Asia populations nor specify any difference for genders even thou

The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire in intercollegiate athletes: validity limited by ceiling effect.

HYPOTHESIS: The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire has been validated as an effective upper extremity specific outcome measure. Normative scores have not been established for young athletes. This study was conducted to establish normative DASH scores for intercollegiate athletes. We hypothesized that DASH scores in intercollegiate athletes differ from published values obtained from the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The DASH questionnaire was administered to 321 athletes cleared for full participation in intercollegiate sports. Their scores were compa

Long-term results of peritoneovenous shunt implantation for refractory ascites in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis: single-center retrospective study of 348 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Despite its reasonable pathophysiological basis, peritoneovenous shunt (PVS) implantation currently plays a very limited role in managing patients with refractory ascites. On the other hand, we have 20 years of experience using PVSs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and long-term outcomes of PVS implantation for the treatment of refractory ascites caused by alcoholic liver cirrhosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 348 consecutive patients who underwent PVS placement. Survival data were compared in subgroups according to: (1) severity o

No association between vitamin D status and COVID-19 infection in São Paulo, Brazil.

In recent years the immunomodulatory actions of vitamin D, a steroid hormone, have been extensively studied. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the question arose as to 25(OH)D status would be related to susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, since several studies pointed out a higher prevalence and severity of the disease in populations with low levels of 25(OH)D. Thus, we investigated the 25(OH)D levels in adults "Detected" positive for SARS CoV-2 by RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) test, and in negative controls, "not Detected", using the Fleury Group's examinat

"Death Knell" for Prophylactic Vena Cava Filters? A 20-Year Experience with a Venous Thromboembolism Guideline.

The role of prophylactic vena cava filters (pVCFs) in trauma patients remains controversial. After 20 years of data collection and experience, we reviewed our venous thromboembolism guideline for the efficacy of pVCFs in preventing pulmonary embolism (PE). A retrospective cohort study was performed using our Level I trauma center registry from January 1997 thru December 2016. This population was then divided by the presence of pVCFs. Univariate analysis was performed comparing the incidence of PEs, deep vein thrombosis, and mortality between those with and without a pVCF. There were 35,658 pat
