The epidemiology of preterm birth.

Secular trends in the prevalence of preterm birth and international comparisons of the rates of preterm birth are difficult to interpret because of differences, both formal and informal, in the registration of extremely preterm births. Accurate estimation of gestational age is another problem in the measurement of preterm birth. Preterm birth is heterogeneous in several ways. It is heterogeneous in terms of the extent to which the birth is preterm (20-27 weeks, 28-31 weeks or 32-36 weeks of gestation); in whether the birth was elective or spontaneous; and among spontaneous idiopathic preterm b

The elimination of polio in the Scandinavian countries.

The Nordic countries, i.e., Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, together with Holland, have all continued to use the killed poliovaccine introduced in the middle of the 1950s and they still use it today. In Denmark, combined vaccination has been practised since 1966, starting with three doses of the killed vaccine and continuing with the oral vaccine. Norway used oral vaccine alone during the 14-year period from 1965 to 1979. In all these countries, the immunizations with the killed vaccine were immediately successful. Poliomyelitis was practically eliminated already by the beginnin

[Agriculture-health interface in the field of epidemiology of vector-borne diseases and the control of vectors].

This paper is a review of the interactions between agriculture and vector borne diseases. Rain forest clearing makes possible the development of heliophilous species of anophelines and snails leading to an increase of malaria and schistosomiasis in Africa. But in Asia, clearing is a control method against Anopheles balabacensis, an important malaria vector. Clearing of forest galleries is followed by the disappearance of shore-dwelling tsetse flies. Woodcutters and pioneer farmers are contaminated with arbovirus and leishmaniasis when entering in natural sylvatic foci of these diseases. Manage

Worldwide status of poliomyelitis in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and plans for its global eradication by the year 2000.

In 1986, a total of 28,951 cases of poliomyelitis were reported to WHO by 175 countries/areas. For 1987, 35,685 cases were reported by 168 countries/areas. Reporting is incomplete for 1988, based on data available as of December 1989. Trends in regional incidence rates for poliomyelitis over a 15-year period from 1974 to 1988 suggest a decline in the incidence of the disease, especially since 1982. However, the reported data underreport actual disease incidence. During 1986, 1987 and 1988, the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) estimates that 200,000-250,000 cases of paralytic poliomyeli

The diagnosis and management of tropical ulcer in east Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea.

This survey, carried out in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, examined the prevalence of tropical ulcer, the accuracy of diagnosis and the methods of management. Most patients presenting with ulcerative skin lesions are treated in acid posts (219) and an estimated 7500 cases are seen annually out of a total rural population of 260,000. A sample survey suggested that of these only two-thirds meet diagnostic criteria for tropical ulcer, the rest being 'sores' or infected traumatic lesions. Standard primary therapy for all such lesions usually includes intramuscular penicillin and regu

Selective primary health care: strategies for control of disease in the developing world. VIII. African trypanosomiasis.

African trypanosomiasis in humans is caused by trypanosomes, parasitic protozoa that inhabit the blood and tissue spaces. Humans are infected by the bite of the tsetse (Glossina species), which itself acquires the parasites from human or animal hosts. The vector and the disease are confined to sub-saharan Africa where the disease occurs in endemic foci from which epidemics arise. Two forms of African trypanosomiasis in humans are recognized and both are fatal if left untreated. Control strategy is dependent on the capacity of the public health services to diagnose and treat cases, and the main

Significance of genetic factors in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: a review.

Observations suggesting a genetic basis for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are reviewed with particular emphasis on the finding of familial aggregation. Studies of both Tourette syndrome and simple tic have found that approximately 30% of patients have a positive family history of tic. The significance of this figure depends on a number of factors, in particular the prevalence of positive tic histories in the population. If the latter figure is 10%, which the best available evidence suggests is a reasonable estimate, approximately 30% of families in the general population would be expected to

[Analysis on prevention and control of some infectious diseases in the elderly aged 60 years and above in China and countermeasure recommendation].

As the progress of population aging in China, the proportion of elderly population is increasing. Both chronic diseases and infectious diseases can threaten the health of the elderly. There are many kinds of infectious diseases, including vaccine preventable infectious diseases affecting the health of adults, such as influenza, pneumococcal diseases and herpes zoster. In addition, the newly emerged COVID-19 has caused a pandemic in the world, resulting the highest proportion of deaths occurred in the elderly and posing a serious threat to the health of the elderly. This paper mainly summarizes
