In recent years, even low-cost fused deposition modeling-type three-dimensional printers can be used to create a three-dimensional model with few errors. The authors devised a method to create a three-dimensional multilayered anatomical model at a lower cost and more easily than with established methods, by using a meshlike structure as the surface layer. Fused deposition modeling-type three-dimensional printers were used, with opaque polylactide filament for material. Using the three-dimensional data-editing software Blender (Blender Foundation, www.blender.org) and Instant Meshes (Jakob et a

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas that arise from the scapula or periscapular soft tissues often require a total scapulectomy. This often implies a large … nctional unit combining an anatomically shaped implant (manufactured using latest three-dimensional printing technology) and a muscular flap, and to maintain the neurovascular supply. The patients were followed up to evaluate functional outcome and complications. Both patients were alive with no evidence of disease. Functional results were satisfactory and …

BACKGROUND: The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for virtual surgical planning has not yet been described. In the United States, over 600,000 computed tomographic (CT) scans are performed annually on children, who are at higher risk than adults of developing cancer caused by ionizing radiation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate whether three-dimensionally-printed craniofacial surgical guides created from "black bone" MRI are comparable in accuracy to those created from CT scans.
METHODS: A mock craniosynostosis surgery translocating four calvarial segments was virtually planned

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a debilitating disease that results in progressive collapse of the femoral head and subsequent degenerative arthritis. Few treatments provide both sufficient mechanical support and biological cues for regeneration of bone and vascularity when the femoral head is still round and therefore salvageable. We designed and 3D printed a functionally graded scaffold (FGS) made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) with spatially controlled porosity, degradation, and mechanical strength properties to reconstruct necrotic bone tissue in t

Steroid-associated osteonecrosis (SAON) often requires surgical core decompression (CD) in the early stage for removal of necrotic bone to facilitate repair where bone grafts are needed for filling bone defect and avoiding subsequent joint collapse. In this study, we developed a bioactive composite scaffold incorporated with icariin, a unique phytomolecule that can provide structural and mechanical support and facilitate bone regeneration to fill into bone defects after surgical CD in established SAON rabbit model. An innovative low-temperature 3D printing technology was used to fabricate the …

Japan has a long history of fighting against great earthquakes that cause structural damage/collapses, fires and/or tsunami. On March 11, 2011 at 14:46 (Friday), the Great East-Japan Earthquake (magnitude 9.0) attacked the Tohoku region (northeastern Japan), which includes Sendai City. The earthquake generated a devastating tsunami, leading to unprecedented disasters (~18,500 victims) in coastal areas of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, despite the fact that people living in the Tohoku region are well trained for tsunami-evacuation procedures, with the mindset of "Tsunami, ten-den-ko."

INTRODUCTION: Visual rehabilitation after open globe injury may be a challenging process because of ametropia following aphakia, corneal scarring with high or irregular corneal astigmatism or loss of contrast sensitivity due to traumatic aniridia. We report on contact lens fitting for visual rehabilitation in patients after open globe injury.
PATIENTS: From 2000 to 2003, contact lenses were fitted unilaterally for the visual rehabilitation in 13 patients after open globe injury. In three patients we found unilateral aphakia, in 8 patients a high or irregular astigmatism after penetrating or a

The "Cardiophone System" is a system designed to expand the relationship between patients and medical services using a transtelephonic electrocardiogram and computer-assisted answering system. The transtelephonic electrocardiogram, or so-called "Cardiophone", developed by Nihon Kohden, Inc., allows the patients to carry a "Cardiophone" to record electrocardiograms during paroxysmal occurrences of palpitation, chest pain, and other symptoms. The Cardiophone may function as a terminal of the host computer at the hospital, which stores the electrocardiogram and print it as soon as the computer re

Here, we report a 3D-printable eutectogel with programmable architectures for multimodal rehabilitation interfaces. The eutectogel is fabricated via polymerization of acrylamide in a ternary deep eutectic solvent, with carbomer and carbon nanotubes incorporated to optimize the rheology, mechanical robustness, and ion/electron conductive network. The optimized formulation possesses mechanical compliance, fatigue resistance, high conductivity, and antifreezing/dehydration properties, while it supports high-fidelity 3D direct ink writing. By programming device architectures, the eutectogel is pri

The complexity of metabolic crosstalk between the liver and pancreas, which controls glucose and homeostasis levels, has been intriguing for models based on conventional in vitro systems. However, the 3D bioprinting path has created an incredible platform of multicellular and spatially concerted microtissues that mimic the interaction of the pancreas. This discovery contributes important insights into metabolic organization, regenerative strategies, and disease mechanisms. Therefore, our review delves into recent advancements in 3D bioprinted crosstalk between liver and pancreas constructs, wi…

Accurate quantitative assessment of temporal bone microanatomy is essential for otologic research and surgical planning. However, existing measurement approaches, including manual tools, ex vivo microscopy, and high-resolution computed tomography, are limited by contact requirements, indirect measurement, insufficient spatial resolution, or the inability to provide efficient quantitative feedback under microscopic visualization. To address these limitations, this study developed an in situ, non-contact three-dimensional (3D) microscopic measurement system for temporal bone anatomy based on ste

Human anterior segment perfusion cultures are frequently used for trabecular meshwork research. However, this model requires the use of whole eye globes which are expensive. Here, we describe a method using human corneal rims as an alternative to anterior segments for perfusion culture. In this method, the human corneal rim is glued to a three-dimensional-printed perfusion plates instead of using mechanical compression in traditional perfusion culture setup. The corneal rim and perfusion plate are placed onto a special holder for perfusion culture. This method is affordable and easy to set up.
