We have shown previously that aldosterone injected s.c. to adrenalectomized rats has a mineralocorticoid specific action on the transmembrane movements of sodium and potassium from the rat tail artery. The kinetics of myosin light chain (LC20) phosphorylation has been studied during in vitro contraction and relaxation of rat uteri. Thirteen of 20 female Wistar rats developed perihilar kidney scars 6 weeks after ascending infection with Escherichia coli 078. After removal of the lesser scarred kidney from 6 of the animals, all animals were followed for 54 weeks. Proteinuria (greater than 18 mg/24 h) developed at 20 weeks in the uninephrectomised infected rats and at 34 weeks in the 2-kidney infected model. Metoclopramide was found to increase the absorption rate constant (ka) of cimetidine by the duodenum and jejunum in both ligated and unligated rats. The effects of treatment with either cysteine (2 X 150 mg/kg) or diethylmaleate (0.7 ml/kg) on renal function and response to the nephrotoxicant hexachloro-1,3-butadiene (HCBD) were examined. H3-dihydroalprenolol (H3-DHA) binding in isolated smooth muscle cells has been studied. Two different binding sites have been detected: a high affinity (highly specific) and a low affinity (nonspecific) binding site. Local anaesthetics are able to displace H3-DHA from nonspecific sites with a rank order of potency that mirrors their local anaesthetic activity. This finding correlates, at the molecular level, with the local anaesthetic properties of beta-blockers, as concluded from classical pharmacological experiments.

The ability of GH to regulate its own receptor in adipocytes of hormone-substituted hypophysectomized rats was studied. Male rats (130-150 g) were hypophysectomized and substituted with T4 and cortisone. A fixed dose of GH (bovine GH, human GH, or ovine GH), was administered for 5-6 days in three different ways: 1) two injections/day, 2) four injections/day, or 3) by osmotic minipumps. GH binding was measured in cell aliquots using [125I]human GH. In unsubstituted hypophysectomized animals, GH binding was decreased and was approximately 25% of the binding observed in adipocytes of normal rats.
