Overrepresentation of Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli is the major gut microbiome signature in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis; a comprehensive metagenomic analysis of IBDMDB datasets.

OBJECTIVES: A number of converging strands of research suggest that the intestinal Enterobacteriaceae plays a crucial role in the development and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), however, the changes in the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae species and their related metabolic pathways in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to healthy people are not fully explained by comprehensive comparative metagenomics analysis. In the current study, we investigated the alternations of the Enterobacterales population in the gut microbiome of patients with CD and UC compar

Analgesia nociception index as a tool to predict hypotension after spinal anaesthesia for elective caesarean section.

Arterial hypotension is the main disadvantage of spinal anaesthesia (SA) for caesarean delivery with deleterious effects on maternal-foetal outcomes. Recently, a non-invasive device 'analgesia nociception index' (ANI) has been developed to evaluate the parasympathetic component of the nervous autonomous system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of ANI to predict the risk of hypotension after SA for elective caesarean section. One hundred patients scheduled for elective caesarean delivery under SA were recruited in this observational prospective study. Hemodynamic and ANI parame

Parietal Activation Associated With Target-Directed Right Hand Movement Is Lateralized by Mirror Feedback to the Ipsilateral Hemisphere.

Current research shows promise in restoring impaired hand function after stroke with the help of Mirror Visual Feedback (MVF), putatively by facilitating activation of sensorimotor areas of the brain ipsilateral to the moving limb. However, the MVF related clinical effects show variability across studies. MVF tasks that have been used place varying amounts of visuomotor demand on one's ability to complete the task. Therefore, we ask here whether varying visuomotor demand during MVF may translate to differences in brain activation patterns. If so, we argue that this may provide a mechanistic ex

Can increased resistance to uterine artery flow be a risk factor for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in childhood? A prospective cohort study.

A prospective cohort study was conducted to determine whether an increased uterine artery pulsatility index (UtA-PI) in the second trimester of pregnancy is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental outcomes in children 2-3 years of age. A group of pregnant women with a UtA-PI below the 90th percentile (P90) and a second group with a UtA-PI ≥ P90 in the second trimester were included in this study. The children of these women were evaluated during their second or third year of life using the Bayley III Screening Test. A total of 858 pregnancies with UtA-PI < P90 and 96 pregnancies with UtA-PI ≥ 90

Self-Efficacy and Pressure Ulcer Prevention After Spinal Cord Injury-Results From a Nationwide Community Survey in Switzerland (SwiSCI).

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a common and severe health condition in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). Skin-care strategies for PU prevention are usually provided during initial rehabilitation. However, individuals with SCI often do not perform these strategies continuously, especially after discharge. The influence of psychological factors such as general self-efficacy (GSE) on the performance of PU prevention behavior has not yet been sufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether persons with greater levels of GSE are more likely to perform skin-care strategies for

Modeling distinct imaging hemodynamics early after TBI: the relationship between signal amplitude and connectivity.

Over the past decade, fMRI studies of cognitive change following traumatic brain injury (TBI) have investigated blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) activity during working memory (WM) performance in individuals in early and chronic phases of recovery. Recently, BOLD fMRI work has largely shifted to focus on WM and resting functional connectivity following TBI. However, fundamental questions in WM remain. Specifically, the effects of injury on the basic relationships between local and interregional functional neuroimaging signals during WM processing early following moderate to severe TBI have

Different faces of discrimination: perceived discrimination among homeless adults with mental illness in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Research on discrimination in healthcare settings has primarily focused on health implications of race-based discrimination among ethno-racial minority groups. Little is known about discrimination experiences of other marginalized populations, particularly groups facing multiple disadvantages who may be subjected to other/multiple forms of discrimination. OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine the prevalence of perceived discrimination due to homelessness/poverty, mental illness/alcohol/drug related problems, and race/ethnicity/skin color while seeking healthcare in the past year among racial

Immunological profile of silent brain infarction and lacunar stroke.

Neuroinflammation is believed to be involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of silent brain infarcts (SBI). However, the immunological profile of SBI has been scarcely investigated. In the context of a national research project named SILENCE, aimed at investigating clinical, biochemical and pathogenic features of SBI, we have measured the plasma profile of some inflammatory-related molecules in SBI patients (n = 21), patients with recent lacunar infarcts (LI, n = 28) and healthy controls (n = 31), consecutively enrolled in four Italian centres. A panel of chemokines (MIG, CTACK, IL16, SD

Children staying in hospital: a research on psychological stress of caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Having a child hospitalized is a stressful event for parents. Previous studies have found increased stress in families with children affected by different kinds of pathologies, and analyzed disease related objective variables producing stress. However, most of these studies recruited caregivers of children with chronic or serious illnesses, and focused on evaluation of objective environmental stressors and did not consider subjective "perception" of stress. The aim of this study was to investigate perception of acute stress in caregivers taking care of children without serious phys

Predictive value of cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and glucose index-obesity-derived index for stroke: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, integrating biochemical markers with anthropometric parameters has become a prevalent approach to optimizing disease forecasting. While the cholesterol-high-density lipoprotein-glucose index (CHG) has emerged as a novel metric for quantifying metabolic stress, its prognostic utility for stroke risk-especially when synergized with obesity-related measures-remains to be fully elucidated. This research systematically evaluates the predictive efficacy of CHG-based obesity indices for stroke, utilizing the traditional triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index as a benchmark

Psychological mechanisms through which classical tang and song poetry moves contemporary readers: a qualitative study based on the aesthetics of reception.

BACKGROUND: As an important part of classical Chinese literature, Tang poetry and Song ci have long been regarded as having distinctive aesthetic appeal and affect-evoking power. However, existing studies have mostly discussed their artistic value from the perspectives of literary history, textual interpretation, or aesthetic features. Fewer studies have begun from readers' lived experience to examine why contemporary individuals are moved by Tang and Song poetry, or how this experience of being moved is associated with personal experience, relational memory, cultural identity, and life unders

Associations of Longitudinal Changes in Blood Biomarkers of Dementia With the Proportion of Genetically Inferred African Ancestry.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: African American individuals have a higher risk of Alzheimer disease (AD) and related dementia (ADRD) than non-Hispanic White individuals. Some cross-sectional studies with self-reported race and ethnicity have reported racial differences in circulating ADRD biomarkers, including phosphorylated tau181 (p-Tau181), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NfL). We aimed to examine the associations of genetically inferred African ancestry proportion with the longitudinal changes in these biomarkers and to evaluate the associations of previously i

Causal Inference for Hypertension Prediction With Wearable E lectrocardiogram and P hotoplethysmogram Signals: Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide, and it puts a heavy burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, it is very important to detect and evaluate hypertension and related cardiovascular events to enable early prevention, detection, and management. Hypertension can be detected in a timely manner with cardiac signals, such as through an electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) , which can be observed via wearable sensors. Most previous studies predicted hypertension from ECG and PPG signals with extracted features that ar
