Beyond da Vinci: a systematic review of next-generation multiport robotic platforms in pediatric surgery.

As robotic surgery expands beyond the da Vinci platform, the relevance of new-generation systems to pediatric patients remains uncertain. This review examined the technical characteristics, applications, and perioperative outcomes of alternative multiport robotic platforms in children. PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were searched through 28 February 2026 in accordance with PRISMA 2020. Owing to clinical heterogeneity, findings were synthesized narratively, with Wilson 95% confidence intervals for key binary outcomes. Six studies reported 166 patients across 27

Robotic Right Trisectionectomy, Main Biliary Confluence Resection, Lymphadenectomy, and Hepaticojejunal Reconstruction for Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHC) remains the only curative treatment.1, 2 Although minimally invasive liver surgery has expanded, major hepatectomies for PHC remain limited because of the technical demands of hilar lymphadenectomy and biliary reconstruction, which are challenging in laparoscopy. Despite the technical advantages of robot-assisted surgery, its role remains debated when it comes to PHC surgery.3 The intent of this video is to present the technique of a robot-assisted extended hepatectomy with biliary reconstruction. METHODS: A 63-year-old woma

Motion Generalization in Humanoid Musculoskeletal Robotic Arm via Brain-inspired Motor Primitive Composition.

Humanoid musculoskeletal robots driven by McKibben muscles offer inherent compliance and safe physical interaction, making them ideal for human-centered environments. However, developing the capacity for learning and generalizing reaching movements to new spatial targets remains a complex mission due to the sophisticated coordination required between perception, decision-making, and control mechanisms. Inspired by the human motor system, we propose a brain-inspired framework for motion learning and generalization on a musculoskeletal robotic arm, integrating two key neural principles: motor pr

Embodied artificial intelligence in robotic orthopaedic surgery: from intelligent assistance to adaptive surgical autonomy.

Despite remarkable advances in robotic orthopaedic surgery over the past three decades, current commercial platforms remain precision-assistance technologies rather than truly adaptive intelligent systems. Embodied Artificial Intelligence (Embodied AI) represents a paradigm shift by enabling robots to perceive, reason, learn, and interact continuously with their physical environment through integrated perception-action loops. This structured narrative review examines the emerging role of Embodied AI in orthopaedic robotic surgery, highlights its conceptual differences from existing platforms,

Impact of Robotic Assistance and Fixation Type on Revisions, Complications, and Survivorship Following Total Knee Arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing adoption of both cementless fixation and robotic-assisted techniques in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), it is important to recognize that these approaches carry distinct historical concerns. Earlier generations of cementless implants were associated with higher early failure rates due to inadequate osseointegration, while early robotic systems faced criticism for increased operative times and complication risk. As a result, the current literature presents conflicting evidence regarding the impact of these technologies on early complications and revision rates.

4D Printing of Highly Maneuverable Robots: Controllable Power Amplification Behaviours of Stimulus-Response Materials.

Highly maneuverable robots can cross obstacles or move quickly with running, jumping, ejection, or multimodal combinations, exhibiting advantages in aerospace, agriculture, medical treatment, etc. Due to the behaviors of high-energy bursts and the huge vibrations during motions, these robots need to be simple and reliable. 4D printing of highly maneuverable robots addresses this challenge by combining the power amplification of stimulus-response materials and additive manufacturing technologies. It integrates actuation, sensing, and control modules into one component with a highly integrated s

Robotic versus laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomy: a post hoc analysis of the ROC'N'ROLL randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Robotic liver surgery may overcome technical limitations of laparoscopic approaches, particularly for anatomical hepatectomy. Comparative prospective data remain limited. METHODS: This exploratory post hoc analysis of the ROC'N'ROLL randomized controlled trial included patients scheduled for minimally invasive anatomical hepatectomy before randomization. Participants were randomized to robotic (RAH) or laparoscopic anatomical hepatectomy (LAH). The primary endpoint of this analysis was the rate of severe postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ III) within 90 days. No su

Robotic-Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty in HIV-Positive Patients: Precision Surgery for a Changing Epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis(OA) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) infection are two major global health burdens increasingly intersecting in orthopaedic practice. The global HIV-positive population is aging due to effective antiretroviral therapy, leading to a grwoing number of patients presenting with end-stage knee osteoarthritis requiring total knee arthroplasty(TKA). Conventional TKA, while successful in the general population, remains vulnerable to aseptic loosening and periprosthetic joint infection(PJI); complications that may be accelerated in immunocompromised hosts with altered bo

Multisensor Localization and Risk-Aware Navigation for Underwater Robots in Turbid and Confined Inland Waters: A Review.

Inland waters such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers, fish ponds, and confined hydraulic structures impose turbidity, shallow-water acoustic multipath, dense boundaries, dynamic biological interference, and limited communication on underwater robots. These coupled constraints can simultaneously degrade sensing, localization, mapping, planning, and control. This structured narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed English-language evidence on underwater navigation, with emphasis on multisensor fusion localization and the transfer of localization uncertainty into risk-aware planning. Towards robot-assisted magnetic particle imaging for mobile point-of-care (neuro)vascular applications.

Rapid diagnosis, timely treatment, and continuous monitoring are essential for improving outcomes in neurovascular diseases (time=brain). Such point-of-care applications, however, require imaging to be conducted in dynamic and often confined spaces. While magnetic particle imaging (MPI) shows preclinical promise for fast (neuro)vascular imaging, it relies on complex and restricted imaging gantries. Here, we present a unique gantry-free robot-assisted MPI strategy (Robotic MPI) that is 'portable'. Using permanent magnets, Hall sensors and correction coils, we developed a single-sided detector w

Multiple Trocar-Site Hernias Following Robot-Assisted Incisional Hernia Repair: A Case Report.

Trocar-site hernia (TSH) is a recognized complication of minimally invasive surgery. Current guidelines suggest fascial closure for trocar sites of 10 mm or larger. However, there is limited evidence regarding the necessity of fascial closure for 8-mm trocar sites. The occurrence of multiple TSHs in a single patient following robot-assisted surgery has not been well documented. We present a rare case of three simultaneous TSHs at 8-mm robotic port sites following a robot-assisted incisional hernia repair.  A 69-year-old male with a BMI of 28.8 kg/m2 presented with a symptomatic umbilical troca

Dual-EKF System Identification and Model Predictive Path Integral Control of a Retinal Microsurgical Robot.

This study presents a modeling and control framework for a retinal microsurgical robot, the Improved Integrated Robotic Intraocular Snake (I2RIS), which accounts for the coupling between pitch and yaw degrees of freedom. The system is modeled using a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) mass-spring-damping (MSD) formulation, with parameters and states jointly estimated through a dual-extended Kalman filter (dual-EKF) approach. Unlike analytical methods such as Cosserat-based models, the proposed approach is computationally efficient, requires minimal training data, and enables real-time control. Th

Self-reconfigurable robotic fish swarms: Collective achievement of diverse locomotion and challenging aquatic tasks.

Conventional aquatic robots are typically constrained by fixed morphology and single-mode locomotion, limiting adaptability to unstructured environments. Inspired by the diverse fin-driven locomotion strategies of natural fish, we present a self-reconfigurable robotic fish swarm system capable of operating across a wide range of aquatic conditions and tasks. Each robotic fish unit features autonomous physical assembly and disassembly capabilities by electropermanent magnets, enabling both connection and intermodule communication, allowing the swarm to dynamically reconfigure its morphology.
