Differences between Subjective and Objective Assessment of Speech Deficiency in Parkinson Disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to establish the frequency at which patients with Parkinson disease subjectively assess the intensity of their speech disorders, factors that the patients believe determine the severity of their vocal impairment, and how their subjective self-assessment of vocal impairment by means of the Voice Handicap Index compares with the objective evaluation of the performance of the articulatory organs by means of Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The methods used Voice Handicap Index, Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, and the Hoehn and Yahr scale. RESULT

Coronary artery bypass graft patients' perception about the risk factors of illness: Educational necessities of second prevention.

BACKGROUND: Patients' beliefs about the cause of cardiac disease (perceived risk factors) as part of the global psychological presentation are influenced by patients' health knowledge. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the relationship between actual and perceived risk factors, identification of underestimated risk factors, and indication of underestimation of every risk factor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of 313 coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients admitted to one hospital in the west of Iran were collected through a demographic interview, actual

Sexual outcomes after partial penectomy for penile cancer: results from a multi-institutional study.

Penile cancer is an uncommon malignancy. Surgical treatment is inevitably mutilating. Considering the strong impact on patients' sexual life we want to evaluate sexual function and satisfaction after partial penectomy. The patients in this study (n = 25) represented all those who attended our institutions and were diagnosed and treated for penile cancer from October 2011 to November 2013. All patients underwent partial penectomy and followed-up (mean: 14 months; range: 12-25). Sexual presurgical baseline was estimated using the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction 15 (IIEF-15). Sexual o

Discordance of voluntary HIV testing with HIV sexual risk-taking and self-perceived HIV infection risk among social media-using black, Hispanic, and white young-men-who-have-sex-with-men (YMSM).

Discordance between self-perceived HIV risk and actual risk-taking may impede efforts to promote HIV testing among young adult men-who-have-sex-with-men (YMSM) in the United States (US). Understanding the extent of, and reasons for, the discordance of HIV risk self-perception, HIV risk-taking and voluntary HIV testing among black, Hispanic and white YMSM could aid in the development of interventions to increase HIV testing among this higher HIV risk population. HIV-uninfected 18-24-year-old black, Hispanic, and white YMSM were recruited from across the US through multiple social media websites

Looking at the self in front of others: Neural correlates of attentional bias in social anxiety.

In social anxiety disorder (SAD), anxiety reactions are triggered by attentional bias to social threats that automatically appear in social situations. The present study aimed to investigate the neural basis and underlying resting-state pathology of attentional bias toward internal and external social threats as a core element of SAD. Twenty-two patients with SAD and 20 control subjects scanned functional magnetic resonance imaging during resting-state and while performing the visual search task. During the task, participants were exposed to internal threat (hearing participants' own pulse-sou

Computerized assessment of body image in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: comparison with standardized body image assessment tool.

UNLABELLED: Body image disturbances are a prominent feature of eating disorders (EDs). Our aim was to test and evaluate a computerized assessment of body image (CABI), to compare the body image disturbances in different ED types, and to assess the factors affecting body image. The body image of 22 individuals undergoing inpatient treatment with restricting anorexia nervosa (AN-R), 22 with binge/purge AN (AN-B/P), 20 with bulimia nervosa (BN), and 41 healthy controls was assessed using the Contour Drawing Rating Scale (CDRS), the CABI, which simulated the participants' self-image in different l

[Evaluation of the German version of the caregiver reaction assessment questionnaire for informal caregivers of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration].

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of patients with loss of vision often have to give physical and emotional support because of the high level of dependence induced. Although it is known that these informal caregivers suffer a higher risk of being affected by burn-out syndrome or depression, the various dimensions of burden, especially of informal caregivers of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nv-AMD) have not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was the evaluation of the German version of the caregiver reaction assessment (CRA) questionnaire i

Older Swedish Adults with High Self-Perceived Health Show Optimal 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Levels Whereas Vitamin D Status Is Low in Patients with High Disease Burden.

Controversy pervades the definition of adequate and optimal vitamin D status. The Institutes of Medicine have recommended serum 25(OH)D levels above 50 nmol/L based upon evidence related to bone health, but some experts, including the Endocrine Society and International Osteoporosis Foundation, suggest a minimum serum 25(OH)D level of 75 nmol/L to reduce the risk of falls and fractures in older adults. In a cross-sectional study, we compared vitamin D status in people ≥75 years selected from four groups with a frailty phenotype, combined with a control group free from serious illness, and who

A prospective service evaluation of acceptance and commitment therapy for patients with refractory epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this service evaluation were to explore the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic treatment for patients with epilepsy based on the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) approach and to assess whether this treatment is likely to be cost-effective. METHOD: We conducted an uncontrolled prospective study of consecutive patients with refractory epilepsy referred for outpatient psychological treatment to a single psychotherapist because of emotional difficulties related to their seizure disorder. Participants were referred by consultant neurologists, neuropsychologists, or

Contesting medicalisation, doubting the diagnosis: patients' ambivalence towards the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Whereas social scientific studies have investigated the emergence of the category Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), the most commonly diagnosed sleep disorder, no study has examined whether and how the ways in which OSA emerged affect patients' reception of the diagnosis. This article fills this gap by drawing upon in-depth interviews with 65 Israelis who received a laboratory diagnosis of OSA. This study finds that many patients doubt the accuracy of their diagnosis, and argues that this scepticism derives from contested macro-level medicalisation processes that preceed and surround the develop

Cultural model of self-stigma among Chinese with substance use problems.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is regarded as one of the most stigmatizing conditions worldwide. To achieve recovery, individuals with substance use problems must learn to cope with stigma. Despite the potential importance of cultural factors in the internalization process of stigma, few studies have incorporated culturally salient factors in understanding self-stigma. We responded to this gap in the literature by investigating a mechanism of self-stigma that focused on a cultural value salient to the Chinese-face concern. Specifically, we hypothesized that two types of face concern (mianzi concern

Evaluation of the DSM-5 severity indicator for binge eating disorder in a community sample.

Research has examined various aspects of the diagnostic criteria for binge-eating disorder (BED) but has yet to evaluate the DSM-5 severity criterion. This study examined the DSM-5 severity criterion for BED based on binge-eating frequency and tested an alternative severity specifier based on overvaluation of shape/weight. 338 community volunteers categorized with DSM-5 BED completed a battery of self-report instruments. Participants were categorized first using DSM-5 severity levels and second by shape/weight overvaluation and were compared on clinical variables. 264 (78.1%) participants were

Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the vitiligo-specific health-related quality of life instrument (VitiQoL) into Brazilian Portuguese.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo, although asymptomatic, highly compromises patients' quality of life (QoL). Therefore, an adequate evaluation of QoL is essential. OBJECTIVES: Translation, cultural adaptation and validation of VitiQol (Vitiligo-specific health-related quality of life instrument) into Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: The study was conducted in two stages; the first stage was the translation and cultural/linguistic adaptation of the instrument; the second stage was the instrument's validation. RESULTS: The translated VitiQol showed high internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.944) and hig

Study protocol: a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of a psychosexual training program for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) run several risks in their psychosexual development and that these adolescents can have limited access to reliable information on puberty and sexuality, emphasizing the need for specific guidance of adolescents with ASD in their psychosexual development. Few studies have investigated the effects of psychosexual training programs for adolescents with ASD and to date no randomized controlled trials are available to study the effects of psychosexual interventions for this target group. METHODS/DESIGN: The ra

Gestational age and adolescent mental health: evidence from Hong Kong's 'Children of 1997' birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Preterm, and more recently early term, birth has been identified as a risk factor for poor health. Whether the sequelae of late preterm or early term birth extends to poor mental health and well-being in adolescence is unclear and has not been systematically assessed. METHOD: Linear regression was used to assess the adjusted associations of gestational age (very/moderate preterm (<34 weeks, n=85), late preterm (34-36 weeks, n=305), early term (37-38 weeks, n=2228), full term (39-40 weeks, n=4018), late term (41 weeks, n=809), post-term (≥42 weeks, n=213)) with self-reported self-e

Exploring the consequences of combining medical students with and without a background in biomedical sciences.

CONTEXT: Medical schools have tended to admit students with strong backgrounds in the biomedical sciences. Previous studies have shown that those with backgrounds in the social sciences can be as successful in medical school as those with science backgrounds. However, the experience of being a 'non-science' student over time has not been well described. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was developed and run with the aim of elucidating the personal experiences of science and non-science students at our institution. Data were generated from a student survey that focused on participants' self-iden

Outcome expectations and physical activity in persons with longstanding multiple sclerosis.

Research suggests that persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) are much less physically active than the general population and that increased physical activity in persons with MS is associated with numerous benefits such as improvements in fatigue, mobility, and quality of life (). Potentially modifiable theory-based determinants of physical activity behavior need to be identified so that researchers may study their effectiveness in randomized clinical trials and clinicians may integrate them into practice to promote physical activity in this population. The purpose of this study was to explore t

Psychological flexibility and nonjudgemental acceptance in voice hearers: relationships with omnipotence and distress.

OBJECTIVE: The psychological flexibility model has been hypothesized as a transdiagnostic, process-oriented approach to understanding various clinical disorders and problems, including chronic pain, anxiety, and substance misuse. In this study we investigated the model's applicability to the experience of hearing distressing voices. METHODS: Fifty people experiencing persisting auditory hallucinations were administered the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, Beliefs about Voices Questionnaire-Revised, Thought Control Questionnaire, and the Beck Anxie

Attenuated cortisol response to acute psychosocial stress in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis.

We recently reported that individuals at ultra-high risk for the development of psychosis (UHR) have elevated levels of chronic stress and deficits in the putative protective factors self-esteem, social support and coping skills. The aim of the present study was to assess endocrine and autonomic responses to acute psychosocial stress and their associations with self-ratings of stress and protective factors in individuals at UHR. Twenty-one patients diagnosed with an "at risk mental state" (12 male, 9 female; mean age 20.8 ± 3.27) and 21 healthy age and gender matched community controls were ex
