In this study, the serological status of the southern Greek population in the 1–10-year, 11–20-year, 21–30-year and 31–40-year age groups with regard to Sabin vaccine strains and a collection of 15 recombinant and four non-recombinant poliovirus vaccine strains was determined. In this article, we describe the findings obtained using immunoblot analysis in the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and its correlation with serological titer and clinical status. We found that all animals bearing amastigote forms recognized antigens with 29 and 32 kDa and that this pattern can be exploited for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes. The recognition of the 29- and 32-kDa antigens was verified even in seronegative dogs and preceded seroconversion in periods ranging from several months to 2 yr. This report concerns an outbreak of infections with this parasite in Navarra, Spain that was associated with home-prepared pork products. BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (TG) is a parasitic protozoon that may cause miscarriages or birth defects if the infection occurs during pregnancy. The study's aim was to evaluate the risk factors associated with TG infection in pregnant women.
