BACKGROUND: Facial nerve (FN) monitoring has been accepted as a standard of care in craniofacial, middle ear, and skull-based surgeries as a means of reducing iatrogenic injury, localizing the FN, and predicting postoperative neurologic function. Past studies have also shown that FN electromyographic monitoring (FNEMG) may have some clinical utility as a monitor of anesthetic depth and predicting patient movement. In this study, we evaluated Bispectral Index (BIS) and FNEMG using two different anesthetic techniques to determine whether these monitors can be used to predict movement in patients

Gigantism and acromegaly have been observed in past populations; however, analyses usually focus on the morphological features of the post-cranial skeleton. The aim of this study is to characterize the internal anatomical features of the skull (brain endocast anatomy and asymmetry, frontal pneumatization, cranial thickness, sella turcica size) of an adult individual from the 11-14th centuries with these two diseases, in comparison with non-pathological individuals from the same population. The material consisted of 33 adult skulls from a mediaeval population, one of them belonging to an adult

Head injury is one of the most common injury types in vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions, which leads to death and long-term disabilities. However, detailed analysis of pedestrian head injuries in real world collisions is scarce. Thus the current study used two samples of 120 cases and 184 cases extracted from 1060 pedestrian collision cases captured during 2000-2015 from the GIDAS (German In-Depth-Accident Study) database to investigate the detailed characteristics of AIS2+ pedestrian head injuries. Firstly, the interrelationship between different head injury types (skull fracture, focal brain

The healing of bone defects in the skull vault is a serious clinical problem. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of two osteoplastic materials on the healing of a cranial vault experimental defect by computed tomography. Two material systems are analyzed in detail: (i) a sodium alginate-based matrix modified with hydroxyapatite microparticles and zinc ions and (ii) a chitosan-based matrix containing in situ-formed brushite nanoparticles; both sample types were loaded with cholecalciferol (VitD3). A total of 36 rats aged 6 months showed that the alginate-based biomaterial promotes

Non-syndromic craniosynostosis is the most common clinical form of craniosynostosis, but the mature phenotype cannot be accounted for by a purely local model of premature suture fusion. The deformity is the product of interactions among calvarial growth, cranial base geometry, dural and mesenchymal signaling, orbital development, and regional soft-tissue adaptation. This narrative review examines current evidence on epidemiology, developmental biology, diagnosis, imaging, operative timing, and surgical management, with emphasis on systematic reviews, multicenter and population-based data, comp

BACKGROUND: Despite surgical correction of unilateral craniosynostosis (ULC), complex cranial base angulation can result in partial reversio … mmetry in the facial middle-third, orbit, and nasal root. Beyond the cranial dysmorphology, initial skull base angulation in unilateral coronal craniosynostosis manifests in long-term mid and lower-third facial asymmetry.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The development of expanded endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEAs) has allowed resection of cranial-base lesions beyond the sella. One major criticism is an increased risk of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage because of the larger skull base defect. We evaluated our experience with vascularized pedicled nasoseptal flap (PNSF) reconstruction and compared the postoperative CSF leak rates between patients undergoing endoscopic transsphenoidal (transsellar) approaches versus expanded EEA (transplanum-transtuberculum, transcribriform, transclival).

The aim of this study was to analyse the bite forces of seven species from three carnivore families: Canidae, Felidae, and Ursidae. The material consisted of complete, dry crania and mandibles. A total of 33 measurements were taken on each skull, mandible, temporomandibular joint, and teeth. The area of the temporalis and masseter muscles was calculated, as was the length of the arms of the forces acting on them. Based on the results, the bite force was calculated using a mathematical lever model. This study compared the estimated areas of the masticatory muscles and the bending strength of th

A nearly complete skeleton of the new abelisaurid Skorpiovenator bustingorryi is reported here. The holotype was found in Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian outcrops of NW Patagonia, Argentina. This new taxon is deeply nested within a new clade of South American abelisaurids, named Brachyrostra. Within brachyrostrans, the skull shortening and hyperossification of the skull roof appear to be correlated with a progressive enclosure of the orbit, a set of features possibly related to shock-absorbing capabilities. Moreover, the development of horn-like structures and differential cranial thickening ap

This study aimed to describe the anatomical and morphological features of cranial suture joints in sixteen sheep skulls and to compare these findings with those reported in other domesticated species. The study of cranial sutures extends beyond morphology to elucidate mechanisms of skull growth, as suture patterns function as regulatory units in cranial development, highlighting the important roles in comparative and evolutionary studies, age estimation, and fracture identification, and serving as reference points in veterinary surgery and radiography. A detailed anatomical examination of shee

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common reason for pediatric emergency room visits. Surgical intervention for mild TBI is rarely necessary in children aged <2 years, but the intracranial findings can influence the management of the patient. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of computed tomography (CT) in the management of children aged <2 years with mild TBI and linear skull fractures on plain-film X-rays.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study analyzed skull X-rays obtained in children <2 years old attended for mild TBI in the emergency room of our ter

Facial reconstruction is a classical technique in forensic anthropology to reestablish the contours of the soft tissues over the skull. The accurate facial soft tissue data plays an essential role in forensic facial reconstruction. However, according to previous studies, various skeletal types might relate to different thickness in facial soft tissue. Until now, there are few publications focusing on the relationship between facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) and different skeletal types, and none of them analyze the FSTT according to various sagittal and vertical skeletal types. The aim of t

When planning operations on the facial skull, transversal asymmetries of the maxillo-mandibular complex cannot be adequately assessed using conventional two-dimensional (2D) x-ray cephalometry. On eight patients who presented with facial skull asymmetries, a three-dimensional (3D) laser technology model (LTM) using CT data was fabricated. Five sagittal plane points and six symmetry points were marked on the LTM, measured with the FlashPoint 3-D Digitizer and then geometrically converted, such that using the sagittal plane points, sella, basion, and nasion, a method could be developed that allo

Intracranial atypical cartilaginous tumors (ACTs) or low-grade chondrosarcoma are rare among all skull base and intracranial tumors. Late diagnosis leads to higher morbidity and worsened neurological deficits caused by neurovascular compression. Intracranial ACTs have a higher mortality rate than other ACTs due to their location, difficulty of surgical management, local invasiveness, and recurrence rate. This report aims to highlight the challenges of diagnosing and managing intracranial ACTs, which can present with symptoms mimicking other cranial base tumors. It also aims to raise awareness …

The cranial base is a critical structure in the head, which is composed of endoskeletal and dermal skeletal. The braincase floor, part of the cranial base, is a midline structure of the head. Because it is a midline structure connecting the posterior skull with the facial region, braincase floor is critical for the orientation of the facial structure. Shortened braincase floor leads to mid-facial hypoplasia and malocclusions. During embryonic development, elongation of the braincase floor occurs through endochondral ossification in the parachordal cartilage, hypophyseal cartilage, and trabecul
