Cognitive Therapy and Task Concentration Training Applied as Intensified Group Therapies for Social Anxiety Disorder with Fear of Blushing-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

The current study examines the efficacy of intensified group therapy for social anxiety disorder with fear of blushing. Task concentration training (TCT) and cognitive therapy (CT) were applied during one weekend and compared with a waiting list condition in a randomized controlled trial including 82 patients. On a second weekend, another intervention was added (resulting in TCT-CT and CT-TCT sequences) to examine order effects. Task concentration training and CT were both superior to the waiting list and equally effective after the first therapy weekend. Also, no differences were found betwee

Gender differences in sleep deprivation effects on risk and inequality aversion: evidence from an economic experiment.

Excessive working hours--even at night--are becoming increasingly common in our modern 24/7 society. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is particularly vulnerable to the effects of sleep loss and, consequently, the specific behaviors subserved by the functional integrity of the PFC, such as risk-taking and pro-social behavior, may be affected significantly. This paper seeks to assess the effects of one night of sleep deprivation on subjects' risk and social preferences, which are probably the most explored behavioral domains in the tradition of Experimental Economics. This novel cross-over study empl

Quality of Life Aspects Determining The-Bio-Psycho-Social Functioning of Patients in The-Perspective of a Planned Extensive Sphincter's Repair Procedure.

UNLABELLED: Damage to the sphincter, regardless of its pathogenesis, consists in the impossibility to control the physiology, or the so-called faecal incontinence. This implies changes in the whole bio-psycho-social functioning of the patients, and thus affects the satisfaction with their quality of life, conditioned by their health status. The problem affects around 5 to 7% of the population. Often enough, the only hope for those patients are repair procedures of the sphincter mechanism. The aim of the study was to evaluate key aspects of quality of life which determine the psycho-social stat

Deleterious effects of a low amount of ethanol on LTP-like plasticity in human cortex.

Ingesting ethanol (EtOH) at low doses during social drinking is a common human behavior for its facilitating effects on social interactions. However, low-dose EtOH may have also detrimental effects that so far are underexplored. Here we sought to test the effects of low-dose EtOH on long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity in human motor cortex. Previous cellular experiments showed that low-dose EtOH potentiates extrasynaptic GABAAR and reduces NMDAR-mediated currents, processes that would limit the expression of LTP. Paired associative transcranial magnetic stimulation (PASLTP) was employ

The role of maternal stress in early pregnancy in the aetiology of gastroschisis: an incident case control study.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of gastroschisis, a congenital anomaly where the infant abdominal wall is defective and intestines protrude from the abdominal cavity, is increasing in many countries. The role of maternal stress in some adverse birth outcomes is now well established. We tested the hypothesis that major stressful life events in the first trimester are risk factors for gastroschisis, and social support protective, in a case-control study in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Gastroschisis cases and three controls per case (matched for maternal age) were identified at routine 18-20 week fetal

The relationship between quality of life and compliance to a brace protocol in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Corrective bracing for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has favourable outcomes when patients are compliant. However, bracing may be a stressful and traumatic experience and compliance with a bracing protocol is likely to be dependent upon patients' physical, emotional and social wellbeing. The Brace Questionnaire (BrQ), a recently-developed, condition-specific tool to measure quality of life (QOL) has enabled clinicians to study relationships between QOL and compliance. METHODS: The BrQ was administered to 31 AIS patients after a minimum of 1 year of wearing a brace. Subject

Lateral epicondylitis in general practice: course and prognostic indicators of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the course of lateral epicondylitis and identify prognostic indicators associated with short- and longterm outcome of pain intensity. METHODS: We prospectively followed patients (n = 349) from 2 randomized controlled trials investigating conservative interventions for lateral epicondylitis in primary care. Uni- and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to investigate the association between potential prognostic indicators and pain intensity (0-100 point scale) measured at 1, 6, and 12 months after randomization. Potential prognostic factors were duration

I am in the passenger seat of my own body: a qualitative interview study of the relationship between binge eating and concurrent problematic alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: The association between binge eating and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) has been demonstrated in genetic, population-based, and clinical studies. Individuals with binge eating report more binge drinking and heavier alcohol consumption than those with eating disorders (EDs) without binge eating. Co-occurring EDs and AUDs are linked to higher levels of ED symptoms, depression, anxiety, and more severe psychosocial impairment compared with EDs alone. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how adults with concurrent binge eating and perceived alcohol problems experience these t
