HIV-sensitive social protection for unemployed and out-of-school young women in Botswana: An exploratory study of barriers and solutions.

Promotive social protection programs aim to increase income and capabilities and could help address structural drivers of HIV-vulnerability like poverty, lack of education and gender inequality. Unemployed and out-of-school young women bear the brunt of HIV infection in Botswana, but rarely benefit from such economic empowerment programs. Using a qualitative exploratory study design and a participatory research approach, we explored factors affecting perceived program benefit and potential solutions to barriers. Direct stakeholders (n = 146) included 87 unemployed and out-of-school young women

Early social isolation in male Long-Evans rats alters both appetitive and consummatory behaviors expressed during operant ethanol self-administration.

BACKGROUND: Postweaning social isolation in rats produces profound and long-lasting cognitive and behavioral deficits in adult animals. Importantly, this housing manipulation alters sensitivity to a number of drugs of abuse including ethanol. However, most studies with ethanol have utilized continuous or limited home-cage access to examine interactions between juvenile social experience and drinking. More recently, social isolation was shown to increased ethanol responding in a "dipper" model of self-administration (Deehan et al., 2007). In the current study, we utilize a "sipper" operant self

Area-Level Social Determinants of Alcohol-Related Mortality: Knowledge Gaps and Implications for Community Health.

PURPOSE: Rates of alcohol-related mortality (including deaths attributed to chronic alcohol use as well as acute causes involving alcohol) have been increasing in the United States, particularly for certain population subgroups, such as women. This review summarizes associations of area-level social determinants of health with alcohol-related mortality. These determinants, measured at the community, county, or state level, include alcohol control policies, health care availability, and a community's socioeconomic environment. Examining multiple geographic levels illuminates how macro-level soc

Altered kinship vocal dynamics in marmosets with valproic acid-induced model of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) involves social communication impairments and repetitive behaviors. Language abnormalities in ASD, such as echolalia and idiosyncratic speech, heighten caregiver stress and affect communication dynamics within the kinship system. However, the influence of ASD-related traits on family-level interactions remains poorly understood in animal models. Here, we established an ASD model in common marmoset via prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure, and analyzed 28,418 kinship vocalizations from VPA-exposed and unexposed (UE) pups with their parents. VPA families exhibited

Self-Knowledge Accuracy and Psychological Adjustment: A Systematic Review.

The question of whether self-knowledge is linked to psychological adjustment requires nuanced consideration. Relevant theoretical frameworks pertain to domains of self-knowledge (ability, personality, social perceptions), types of self-knowledge (normative vs. profile), forms of psychological adjustment (intrapersonal vs. interpersonal), or interactions among these factors. In this systematic review, we outline these theoretical frameworks, specify their predicted pattern of association between self-knowledge and psychological adjustment, and evaluate the evidence. The findings do not support

Central neural circuits and their associated mechanisms of inter-organ crosstalk.

The central nervous system (CNS), which comprises the brain and spinal cord, serves as the core regulatory hub for maintaining homeostasis and coordinating diverse physiological functions. These functions include interoception, cognition, and social behavior. The intricate architecture and extensive connectivity of the CNS enable integration of multi-system responses, thereby ensuring bodily stability and adaptability. The CNS exerts profound regulatory influences on fundamental life-sustaining processes and higher-order cognitive and social functions. This is mediated by distinct neural circu

Untouched: understanding the role of touch in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) engage in a wide array of rituals, including both visible behaviors and mental activities, with some of them involving the sense of touch. However, despite the essential role of touch in physical, emotional, and social interactions, the link between touch and OCD has not been thoroughly examined. This review explores the complex and under-investigated relationship between touch and OCD across three domains: (1) sensory phenomena, including "just-right" sensations and tactile over-responsivity; (2) social and interpersonal touch, particularly in t…

Urban neighborhood factors influencing adolescent health and well-being: A qualitative study among adolescent boys in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Adolescent health and well-being is significantly influenced by the urban living environment. This study examined what health and well-being mean to adolescents and how they perceive neighborhood factors as influencing them. Interviews with 15 adolescent boys from a low socioeconomic urban neighborhood in the City of Utrecht, the Netherlands, reveal that, according to these boys, doing fun things and spending time with friends and peers underpin their health. The adolescents indicated that such activities support adolescents' subjective well-being by providing opportunities to, inter alia, dev

Multidimensional relationships between sensory perception and cognitive aging.

A growing literature suggests that declines in sensory/perceptual systems predate cognitive declines in aging, and furthermore, they are highly predictive for developing Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's related dementias (ADRD). While vision, hearing, olfaction, and vestibular function have each been shown to be related to ADRD, their causal relations to cognitive declines, how they interact with each other remains to be clarified. Currently, there is substantial debate whether sensory/perceptual systems that fail early in disease progression are causal in their contributions to cognitive l

Speaking Up and Being Heard: The Importance of Functional Communication and Discourse Principles in Aphasia Intervention.

This article acknowledges Audrey Holland's influence on aphasiology as it specifically relates to the emergence of a strengths-based perspective on the everyday communication of people with aphasia. We explore a historical perspective, as well as current ways in which everyday communicative events are approached in both clinical and research practice. The term "functional communication" is synonymous with Audrey's work, with linguistically-based discourse analysis and therapy both viewed as natural companions and extensions of the concept within aphasiology. Audrey's focus on the interactional

The psychological burden associated with metabolic syndrome: Evidence from UK and US older adults.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the psychological burden associated with metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). METHODS: We used comparable longitudinal data of older adults (≥50 years) from the UK (English Longitudinal Study of Aging) and the US (Health and Retirement Study). We defined MetSyn based on biomarker assessments (e.g., blood pressure, impaired glycemic control). Using regression models, we tested a range of individual psychological outcomes (e.g., depressive symptoms) associated with MetSyn. We also examined whether these psychological outcomes may explain or moderate the link between MetSyn and

Recognition of Basic Emotions with and without the Use of Emotional Vocabulary by Adolescents with Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) often experience behavioral and emotional issues that complicate their socialization process and may lead to psychopathological disorders. These problems may be related to deficits affecting emotional knowledge, particularly emotional vocabulary. Because emotional vocabulary makes it easier for typically developing children to identify emotions, a deficit affecting it in DS could be problematic. METHODS: Twenty-eight adolescents with DS matched with typically developing (TD) children for their score on the Benton Facial Recognition Test were asked

Bilateral costly expulsions resolve the public goods dilemma.

Expulsion has been found to promote cooperation in social dilemmas, but only if it does not incur costs or is applied unilaterally. Here, we show that removing both conditions leads to a spontaneous resolution of the costly expulsion problem. Namely, by studying the public goods game where cooperators and defectors can expel others at a personal cost, we find that public cooperation thrives as expulsion costs increase. This is counterintuitive, as the cost of other-regarding behaviour typically places an additional burden on cooperation, which is in itself costly. Such scenarios are referred t

Stigmatization in dermatology with a special focus on psoriatic patients.

A stigma is currently defined as a discrediting mark, biological or social, that sets a person off from others and disrupts interactions with them. People who differ from social norms in some respect are often negatively labeled. A number of medical conditions are recognized at present as stigmatizing their sufferers and certain skin diseases are among them. The article aimed to analyze the current understanding about stigmatization among dermatological patients, especially those with psoriasis. We performed our search on PubMed up to November 2016 and utilized combinations of key phrases cont

The complexities of designing therapy for Māori living with stroke-related communication disorders.

Stroke-related communication disorders can have a substantial impact on Māori whānau (extended family). Timely and appropriate speech-language therapy is required, but there are many challenges in providing this. In this article we discuss the need for a kaupapa Māori approach to speech-language therapy that is designed by Māori for Māori, and undertaken in a Māori way. We report the results of a literature review that revealed a small but significant body of literature describing Māori experiences of stroke, aphasia and speech-language therapy, and evidence that a Māori-specific therapy progr

The bodily self and its disorders: neurological, psychological and social aspects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The experience of ourselves as an embodied agent with a first-person perspective is referred to as 'bodily self'. We present a selective overview of relevant clinical and experimental studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Sharing multisensory body space with others can be observed in patients with structurally altered bodies (amputations, congenital absence of limbs), with altered functionality after hemiplegia, such as denial of limb ownership (somatoparaphrenia) and with alterations in bodily self-consciousness on the level of the entire body (e.g. in autoscopic phenomena).
