The ReDiKid framework: a transdisciplinary systems approach to child resilience in the digital age.

Children's lives are increasingly shaped by digital environments that influence learning, social relationships, daily routines, and exposure to both opportunities and adversity. However, existing approaches often examine digital experiences, self-regulation, movement behaviors, and social context separately. This paper introduces ReDiKid (Resilient Kid in the Digital World), a developmental-systems framework for understanding resilience in late childhood, with a primary focus on children aged approximately 9-11 years. ReDiKid conceptualizes resilience as a higher-order, adversity-activated pro

Family and community pressure, obesity-related behaviours, and psychological wellbeing among female adolescents with overweight or obesity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity has physical, psychological and social consequences. Family and community influences can be important in determining the eating behaviour, body image and emotional health of adolescents. Few qualitative studies have investigated female adolescents' own perception of family and community related pressure around their weight. METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study used semi-structured interviews to investigate these experiences among 30 female adolescents aged 12-19 years (mean 16.3 years) with overweight or obesity. Weight status was classified against the W

Refractions of tuberculosis and migration in the northern suburb of Paris: Exposure, adherence, and semantic recalcitrance.

France is overall a low endemic country for tuberculosis (TB); however, Seine-Saint-Denis-the poorest department of metropolitan France-has the highest incidence rate in the whole country, excluding overseas territories. At the national level, TB mainly concerns people coming from a country with a high endemicity of TB, people in conditions of absolute poverty, and people living in prison facilities. In this north-eastern Parisian suburb, we conducted qualitative research through a multi-sited ethnography in six university hospitals of the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), two i

The psychosocial impact of erythropoietic protoporphyria in childhood: a guide for parents.

INTRODUCTION: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP), collectively referred to here as EPP, are rare inherited disorders of heme biosynthesis characterized by severe cutaneous photosensitivity. EPP imposes significant psychosocial challenges, including activity limitations and social isolation. PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize how the psychosocial challenges of EPP evolve across developmental stages by eliciting perspectives from parents of children with EPP. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative survey study. Eligible participants were r

Forensic insights into mortality and challenges in post-mortem investigations of homeless individuals: a 10-year study (2014-2024) in Milan, Italy.

Forensic medicine represents a critical socio-health observatory for socially marginalized populations. This study provides the first systematic retrospective forensic analysis of mortality among people experiencing homelessness in Italy. We examined 104 decedents undergoing autopsy in Milan between 2014 and 2024. The annual number of autopsied homeless decedents increased over the study period, peaking in 2023-2024. The majority of deaths occurred in indoor public spaces (45/104, 43.3%), with the remainder in hospitals or green areas, reflecting extreme social marginalization and environmenta

Fibromyalgia Subgroups Identified Using Model-Based Clustering: Results from UK Biobank.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a heterogeneous chronic condition with wide variability in symptom burden, psychosocial distress, and functional impact. This study aimed to identify latent FM subgroups reflecting multidimensional patient profiles using comprehensive biopsychosocial variables and model-based clustering methods within UK Biobank. Individuals meeting the 2016 American College of Rheumatology FM criteria (n = 4,172) were analysed using Gaussian mixture clustering. Twenty-eight variables across sociodemographic, clinical symptoms, and psychological/behavioural domains were included. Cluster s

Bridging Social Determinants of Health and Multidimensional Frailty Among Older Adults: A Domain-Specific Latent Class and Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are increasingly recognized as key contributors to frailty, yet their multidimensional associations remain underexplored. This study examined how multiple SDoH domains and specific variables relate to distinct frailty domains among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We analyzed 10,654 adults aged ≥ 60 years in the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Five SDoH domains, defined by the Healthy People 2030 framework, were assessed: Economic Stability, Education Access and Quality, Health Care Access and Quality, Neig

Interventions against loneliness and social isolation in older adults- a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a growing health and social challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic boosted feelings of loneliness for many people. To combat loneliness, a wide range of interventions have been developed and evaluated for their efficacy and effectiveness. As a result, many new interventions to alleviate loneliness have been developed, especially technological interventions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive and up-to-date systematic review to identify interventions aimed at loneliness and social isolation among adults, 60 years and older published during

Trapped in fire: A qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis of causes, challenges, and responses after self-immolation in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Self-immolation is a serious public health problem in Iran, accounting for approximately 16% of admissions for burns, and the victims are predominantly women and young. Despite its prevalence, systematic reviews of qualitative data on the causes, challenges, and responses to self-immolation are sparse. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies that have assessed self-immolation in Iran. We searched the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scientific Information Database, and Magiran databases until August 2025. We appraised stud

Fatherhood and men's participation across diverse antenatal care systems in rural Eastern Zimbabwe: A qualitative study.

Men's participation in antenatal care (ANC) is widely seen as essential for improving access, uptake, and pregnancy outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the region with the world's highest maternal and child mortality rates. However, current studies often approach participation narrowly through involvement in biomedical ANC, overlooking local fatherhood experiences and men's relational and culturally grounded roles beyond clinical settings. Drawing on Afro-communitarianism and social capital frameworks, we conducted a qualitative study in Mafararikwa, rural Eastern Zimbabwe to explore the for

Experiences and coping strategies of community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults with physio-cognitive decline syndrome: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Physio-Cognitive Decline Syndrome (PCDS) is a clinical characterized by concurrent declines in physical and cognitive functions that precede disability. Taiwan's rapidly aging population highlights declines in physical and cognitive functions as precursors to disability, posing key challenges in geriatric care. Research shows these declines begin in early middle age and progress with age. Understanding middle-aged and older adults' experiences and coping strategies for Physio-Cognitive Decline Syndrome (PCDS) is essential for developing effective interventions. PURPOSE: This study

Towards medical pedagogical pragmatism: transforming medical students' Understanding of community health needs through the integrated longitudinal community clerkship in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Community-oriented medical education seeks to align medical training with priority community health needs and their lived realities. While longitudinal community-based clerkships are increasingly adopted to promote socially accountable graduates, there is limited qualitative insights into how these experiences can transform students’ understanding of community health needs, particularly in resource-constrained settings. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how participation in a 20-week Integrated Longitudinal Community Clerkship at a South African medical school transformed medical stud

Diversity in energy transition: a multi-case study on DIY solar energy in Germany.

The transition to renewable energy systems is not only a technological challenge but also a deeply social and cultural process with significant implications for intersectional equality. Citizen-led energy initiatives are often portrayed as ideal spaces for participatory engagement, yet they can reproduce exclusionary dynamics, particularly regarding gender-related injustices. With a particular focus on FLINTA*-persons this study examines how citizen-led, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) photovoltaic (PV) initiatives in Germany translate normative commitments to diversity and justice into everyday organiza

Comparing Neighborhood Indices of Socioeconomic Status, Segregation, and Healthcare Access for Predicting Late-Stage Breast Cancer.

Composite indices of neighborhood-level social environment are frequently used in cancer research, but relationships among these indices have been seldom studied, especially in race-stratified analyses. We considered four census tract-level social indices: Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI; continuous, quartiles, and clusters); Yost (continuous, quartiles, and clusters); racialized-income Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE; continuous, quartiles, and clusters); and a care access metric (categorical). These were linked to the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a cohort of 2998 adults (50%

Family-Centered Care and Family Well-Being in a Community-Based Adapted Sport Program for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Family-Centered Care (FCC) is an established standard in pediatric rehabilitation, but it has been studied almost entirely inside health services; whether its principles survive the move into community settings is largely unknown. This paper describes how caregivers perceive the family-centeredness of a community-based adapted sport program and characterizes child quality of life and caregiver well-being. METHODS: Cross-sectional study within the "Skill-In" program (University of Messina). Nineteen caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities completed th

Knee health and associations with female-specific health, physical, psychological and social-gendered factors in women runners: the TRAIL-W cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Running is a popular recreational activity worldwide, with women's participation growing rapidly over the past decade. Compared with men, women runners are more likely to sustain a running-related injury, such as bone stress and knee injuries. Following a serious knee injury and subsequent surgery, women also experience worse knee and health-related outcomes than men. However, little is known about the intersection of female-specific health, physical, psychological and social-gendered factors with knee health in women runners with and without a history of knee surgery. METHODS A
