Depression in palliative care patients--a prospective study.

Psychological and psychiatric morbidity can be a major source of distress to terminally ill patients and their relatives and friends. A prospective study was carried out to determine the prevalence of undiagnosed depression in palliative care patients and to determine whether factors such as age, previous psychiatric history and perceived social support have any association with the development of depression when patients have advanced metastatic cancer. Patients aged between 18 and 70 years who had a prognosis of < or = 6 months and who were receiving palliative care only for advanced metasta…

Subtypes of social phobia: are they of any use?

This study investigated the existence of DSM-IV social phobia subtype models in the community. Data came from the Dresden Predictor Study of a representative sample of 1877 German women (aged 18-24 years) who completed a diagnostic interview and filled out various self-report questionnaires. The number of feared social situations was distributed continuously without a clear-cut for delineation of subtypes and significantly increased functional impairment, comorbidity, subjective need for psychotherapy, seeking psychotherapeutic help and dysfunctional attitudes, and decreased social support and…

Changing social factors and their long-term implications for health.

This paper presents findings and arguments to show the power of social factors to affect health at the individual and at the national level. Social factors most strongly and negatively associated with health, at both levels, are those that indicate disorganisation and disruption, perceived helplessness and lack of support, low educational attainment, and poverty. Adverse changes in these social factors and their negative effects on health have been observed in many studies. When such adverse changes affect the lives and health of children, and those who will become parents, they affect the pre

Perceptions of relationship changes during pregnancy in Latinas: A qualitative study.

Pregnancy is shaped by complex social dynamics and interpersonal changes that influence how expecting mothers connect with their families and others around them. While social support has been linked to better maternal mental health, less is known about how relationships themselves change during pregnancy. This study explores how pregnant Latinas living in the United States perceive changes in their family, partner, and peer relationships and how these evolving connections influence their sense of support. A subset of 48 pregnant Latinas who participated in a larger study took part in a one-on-…

Perceived psychological safety, state social connection, and student flourishing in collaborative music activities: a three-wave longitudinal study.

Collaborative music activities can support relationships and well-being, but the present study did not directly test music-specific mechanisms such as synchrony or collective expression. Instead, it examined a general interpersonal process within higher music education: whether students' individually perceived psychological safety was longitudinally associated with flourishing through state social connection. A three-wave survey was completed by 341 university music students from 23 groups at three Chinese universities, with approximately 6 weeks between waves. Psychological safety was analyze

High COPD prevalence among socially marginalized hospitalized patients. A pragmatic multicenter prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco exposure is the main risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but other risk factors, including low socio-economic status (SES), may also contribute. Danish hospitals have introduced social nurses who support patients with complex health and social conditions. These nurses represent a unique point of contact for identifying hospitalized marginalized individuals who may not have undergone prior diagnostic evaluation for COPD. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of COPD among hospitalized marginalized individuals in contact with social nurses in Den

Optimising tobacco control campaigns within a changing media landscape and among priority populations.

Reviews published over the past decade confirm tobacco control campaigns can be effective for influencing adult and youth tobacco use behaviours, with strengthening evidence for high cost-effectiveness. Evidence is also accumulating for positive campaign effects on interpersonal discussions, social norms and policy support that can help motivate and sustain quitting and reduce uptake. Research needs over the next decade centre on the rapidly changing media environment and the equity of campaign effects among high smoking prevalence communities. The field needs specific evidence on: how to meas

Moving together: The role of family co-participation in promoting physical activity among adults with autism.

BACKGROUND: Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience high rates of physical inactivity and obesity, contributing to elevated cardiometabolic risk. Although social support influences health behaviors, the role of co-participation in physical activity (PA) with family and friends remains underexamined among adults with ASD, particularly within Hispanic/Latino populations. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine differences in family- and friend-based co-participation in PA between physically active and inactive adults with ASD, and (2) to examine the associ…

Exploring social and environmental mechanisms as predictors of mental health among young adults with perinatal HIV infection and exposure.

Young adults living with perinatally acquired HIV (YAPHIV) and those perinatally exposed but uninfected (YAPHEU) can face mental health challenges during the transition to adulthood, including depression, anxiety and life stressors. Social support from family and friends may help attenuate the impact of stress on mental health. This longitudinal study examined whether family relationships and friend support predicted psychiatric disorders and moderated the association between stress and mental health outcomes among 197 young adults affected by HIV in the United States (62% YAPHIV; 39% YAPHEU).…
