2q24-q31 deletion: report of a case and review of the literature.

We report a patient with a de novo interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 2 involving bands 2q24.3-q31.1. The patient shows postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, ptosis, down-slanting palpebral fissures, long eyelashes and micrognathia. Halluces are long, broad and medially deviated, while the other toes are laterally deviated and remarkably short with hypoplastic phalanges. She also showed developmental delay, seizures, lack of eye contact, stereotypic and repetitive hand movements and sleep disturbances with breath holding. Prenatal and three independent postnatal karyotyp

Ictal grasping: prevalence and characteristics in seizures with different semiology.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate ictal grasping (IG), defined as the act of gripping something firmly during focal epileptic seizures, and to evaluate whether it characterizes specific seizure types. METHODS: We analyzed the video-recordings of 694 seizures in 109 consecutive candidates to epilepsy surgery. Seizures with motor manifestations (n = 511) were selected and divided into four semiological groups: (a) frontal "hyperkinetic" seizures (FHS): 30 seizures, 12 patients, (b) frontal lobe seizures (FLS) other than FHS: 228 seizures, 26 patients, (c) temporal lobe seizures

A genetic screen for mutations that affect cranial nerve development in the mouse.

Cranial motor and sensory nerves arise stereotypically in the embryonic hindbrain, act as sensitive indicators of general and region-specific neuronal development, and are directly or indirectly affected in many human disorders, particularly craniofacial syndromes. The molecular genetic hierarchies that regulate cranial nerve development are mostly unknown. Here, we describe the first mouse genetic screen that has used direct immunohistochemical visualization methods to systematically identify genetic loci required for cranial nerve development. After screening 40 pedigrees, we recovered seven

Masculine interest behind high prevalence of female contraceptive methods in rural Nepal.

OBJECTIVE: This article explores the nexus between intraspousal power relations and couples' participation in contraceptive decision-making. Further, it discloses whether perceived gender roles and privilege influence couples' contraceptive behaviour in rural Nepal. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-three couples from 197 randomly selected households from two rural population clusters in eastern Nepal were interviewed. Additionally, 40 key informants were included to collect in-depth qualitative information. The conclusion provides the essence of the results from quantitative and qualitative an

Impairment of dopaminergic system function after chronic treatment with corticotropin-releasing factor.

Mounting evidence suggests that chronic stress may have a detrimental effect on dopaminergic function and, in certain individuals, could contribute to the pathophysiology of central nervous system disorders like depression, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's disease. Therefore, the effects of chronic elevated brain levels of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), a crucial mediator of the behavioral stress response, on dopaminergic function were investigated. Rats treated intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) with 1 microg of CRF per day for 13 days displayed a decreased stereotyped response to D-amph

Fictive locomotor patterns generated by tetraethylammonium application to the neonatal rat spinal cord in vitro.

Intrinsic spinal networks generate a locomotor rhythm characterized by alternating electrical discharges from flexor and extensor motor pools. Because this process is preserved in the rat isolated spinal cord, this preparation in vitro may be a useful model to explore methods to reactivate locomotor networks damaged by spinal injury. The present electrophysiological investigation examined whether the broad spectrum potassium channel blocker tetraethylammonium could generate locomotor-like patterns. Low (50-500 microM) concentrations of tetraethylammonium induced irregular, synchronous discharg

Fibrosis correlates with a ductular reaction in hepatitis C: roles of impaired replication, progenitor cells and steatosis.

The mechanisms for progressive fibrosis and exacerbation by steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) are still unknown. We hypothesized that proliferative blockade in HCV-infected and steatotic hepatocytes results in the default activation of hepatic progenitor cells (HPC), capable of differentiating into both biliary and hepatocyte lineages, and that the resultant ductular reaction promotes portal fibrosis. To study this concept, 115 liver biopsy specimens from subjects with HCV were scored for steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Biliary epithelium and HPC were decorated by cyt

Analysis of a complex vertical copulatory-courtship display in the yellow fever vector Sabethes chloropterus.

Sabethes chloropterus (Von Humboldt) (Diptera: Culicidae), an arboreal mosquito vector of the yellow fever virus, perches on vertical surfaces, where airborne males patrol for potential mates and mating occurs. Laboratory analysis of 26 virgin mating pairs partly confirms and greatly extends an earlier description suggesting that males perform a courtship ritual. A male approaches a female by hovering behind her, moving toward her from one side, reaching toward her and occasionally touching her with his closest midleg, and eventually seizing her wing with that midleg and inverting beneath her,

Complex locking rather than complete cessation of neuronal activity in the globus pallidus of a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-treated primate in response to pallidal microstimulation.

High-frequency stimulation of the globus pallidus (GP) has emerged as a successful tool for treating Parkinson's disease and other motor disorders. However, the mechanism governing its therapeutic effect is still under debate. To shed light on the basic mechanism of deep brain stimulation (DBS), we performed microstimulation in the GP of a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-treated monkey while recording with other microelectrodes in the same nucleus. We used robust methods to reduce the stimulus artifact, and 600-3000 repetitions of a single stimulus and of high-frequency short trai

Influence of sensory and proprioceptive impairment on the development of phantom limb syndrome during regional anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: The relation between impairment of sensorimotor function and occurrence of phantom limb syndrome (PLS) during regional anesthesia has not been described. This study assessed the temporal relation between PLS and the progression of sensorimotor impairment during placement of a brachial plexus nerve block. METHODS: Fifty-two patients had their arm randomly placed either alongside their body (group A) or in 90 degrees abduction (group B) immediately after brachial plexus nerve block placement. Responses to pin prick, cold, heat, touch, proprioception, and voluntary movement were asse

Amphetamine-induced behavioral activation is associated with variable changes in basal ganglia output neurons recorded from awake, behaving rats.

Systemic or intra-striatal administration of d-amphetamine (AMPH) elicits a dose-dependent pattern of behavioral activation and neuronal firing in the striatum. To determine if the AMPH-induced striatal firing pattern is expressed in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), a main target of striatal efferents and the primary output nucleus of the basal ganglia, we recorded the activity of 214 SNr units in alert, behaving rats responding to either systemic (1.0 or 5.0 mg/kg, sc) or intra-striatal (20 microg/microl/min) AMPH. Both routes of administration increased behavior but the strongest

Spatial and temporal organization of ensemble representations for different odor classes in the moth antennal lobe.

In the insect antennal lobe, odor discrimination depends on the ability of the brain to read neural activity patterns across arrays of uniquely identifiable olfactory glomeruli. Less is understood about the complex temporal dynamics and interglomerular interactions that underlie these spatial patterns. Using neural-ensemble recording, we show that the evoked firing patterns within and between groups of glomeruli are odor dependent and organized in both space and time. Simultaneous recordings from up to 15 units per ensemble were obtained from four zones of glomerular neuropil in response to fo

Developmental switch in axon guidance modes of hippocampal mossy fibers in vitro.

Hippocampal mossy fibers (MFs), axons of dentate granule cells, run through a narrow strip, called the stratum lucidum, and make synaptic contacts with CA3 pyramidal cells. This stereotyped pathfinding is assumed to require a tightly controlled guidance system, but the responsible mechanisms have not been proven directly. To clarify the cellular basis for the MF pathfinding, microslices of the dentate gyrus (DG) and Ammon's horn (AH) were topographically arranged in an organotypic explant coculture system. When collagen gels were interposed between DG and AH slices prepared from postnatal day

[An ischemic syndrome of the oculumotor nucleus: associated clinical and anatomical variations on a theme].

Nuclear syndrome of the oculomotor nerve was first described in 1981, it is characterized by the association of an ipsilateral third nerve palsy with a paresis of elevation in the contralateral eye. This syndrome can be caused by vascular or tumoral lesions in the upper midbrain. It is rarely due to ischemic unilateral mesencephalic lesions, because ischemic lesions of the midbrain are usually integrated in a diffuse involvement of the brainstem and the thalamo-sub-thalamic region. In case of nuclear syndrome of the third nerve due to isolated upper midbrain infarct in the paramedian territory

[Clinical features of epilepsy in autism spectrum disorders].

Autism is a rare disease, but is currently in vogue. An incidence of 1/1,000 has been estimated for early childhood autism, but in autism spectrum the incidence can reach 30/1,000. The clinical characteristics of autism are cognitive language disorders, lack of social interaction, obsessive behaviours with stereotypic movements and epilepsy. For some authors it is an associated symptom while for others it is a cardinal symptom of the disease. Epilepsy in autism, as an association, was reported as early as 1944 by Leo Kanner, in describing his initial work involving 11 cases and how one of them

Transgenic mice expressing mutant Notch3 develop vascular alterations characteristic of cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is an increasingly recognized adult-onset autosomal dominant vascular dementia, caused by highly stereotyped mutations in the Notch3 receptor. CADASIL is a widespread angiopathy characterized by a degeneration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and the abnormal accumulation of electron-dense granular material called GOM and Notch3 protein, because of an impaired clearance. Evidence that VSMCs are the primary target of the pathogenic process is supported by the restricted expression of Notc

Risk factors associated with behavioural disorders of crib-biting, weaving and box-walking in Swiss horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Studies on the prevalence of behavioural disorders in horses and on associated risk factors have revealed inconsistent results. There are many studies on the neuropharmacological, surgical or mechanical therapy of stereotypies, but little is known about their causation. OBJECTIVES: To explore risk factors associated with the occurrence of behavioural disorders in horses. METHODS: A sample of horse owners, selected randomly and representative for Switzerland, was contacted in a postal survey. Answers were provided for 622 stables (response rate 35.2%). Individual

Topographical Assessment of Ethological and Dopamine Receptor Agonist-Induced Behavioral Phenotype in Mutants with Congenic DARPP-32 'Knockout'.

Congenic (10 backcrosses into C57BL/6J) mutants with targeted gene deletion of DARPP-32, a neuronal phosphoprotein regarded as an essential mediator of the biological effects of dopamine (DA), were assessed phenotypically using an ethologically based approach that resolves all topographies of behavior in the mouse repertoire. Over initial exploration, female, but not male, DARPP-32 mutants evidenced increased locomotion and decreased grooming, while a decrease in rearing seated was evident in mutants of both genders; continuing assessment over several hours did not reveal additional phenotypic

[Genetics of autism: from genome scans to candidate genes].

The autistic disorder was firstly described by Leo Kanner sixty years ago. This complex developmental disability is characterized by social and communicative impairments and repetitive and stereotyped behaviours and interests. The prevalence of autism in the general population is about 1 in 1,000, with four males affected for one female. In approximately 15% of the cases, autism is associated with known genetic disorders, such as fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis or Rett syndrome. Nevertheless, a recognised medical etiology can only be identified in a minority of cases. A higher recurrenc

Dopamine re-uptake inhibitor GBR-12909 induction of aberrant behaviors in animal models of dopamine dysfunction.

Many individuals with mental retardation exhibit chronic aberrant behaviors (CABs) that includes hyperactive, stereotyped, aggressive, and self-injurious behaviors. Brain imaging studies have found that several of these individuals have abnormalities in their dopaminergic neurotransmitter systems that are thought to be responsible in part, for the development of these behaviors. The present study evaluated the effects of a selective dopamine re-uptake blocker, GBR-12909 in three animal models of varying striatal dopamine concentrations. The three animal models included the neonatal 6-hydroxydo
